Sweet!! Doin the big Honda proud. Like how you're using the midrange torque and pulling higher gears, seems like anyway. Lotsa guys who are used to modern bikes, 4 strokes, rev the life outta a 500 when they get on one. You're ridin it proper! And fast!!!
@@1622yamaha spot on bud! A lot of folks don’t realize these things make more torque than a modern 450 and the sweet spot on how to ride them is just as you say!
@@marcogutierrez1363 that’s awesome! Yeah you can basically idle them around and still scare yourself. So much torque too! Those early years 85 and 86 were before honda started to detune them. 85 is a short rod motor thats known to be the most aggressive of any of the 500 model years.

I like how he's puttering around at idle, and still going really fast. I tested a friends TM 300 two stroke in the woods a while back, and it was a frustrating experience. I felt like I was going nowhere, as the revs were just barely above idle most of the time. Taking a look at the trees going by told me otherwise! The CRs are all low to mid. They fall on their face if you rev them. The KX seems to like to rev, but it takes it an extra second to do it. Has much more flywheel effect, but not as much as a YZ490.
@@dr.hugog.hackenbush9443I've owned a few dozen different manufacturers in the " big bore" category. You're correct about the cr and kx. My mindset was CR 500's are for MX track/racing and aggressive single track. KX 500's are more for desert racing and BIG MX tracks. I don't remember( it's been 10+ years) the exact tooth ratio for the desert gearing ,but I had no problem doing 110+mph in 5th. The CR's on the other hand can be a handful especially in the upper portion of the midrange. I loved my 85 CR 500 (85-86 were the only years for the short rod engines, 87-01 pretty much stayed the same) and it was a touchy light switch. Imagine how I feel. I woods race a 1982 RM465. That thing is rarely on the pipe for most of the tracks I race at. It's has so much torque that you don't need to rev it out much. In fact, you're usually better off not getting on the pipe. When the tracks do open up, I better hold on tight because she's trying to rocket out from under me. That being said, mine is actually a very tame bikes. I couldn't be happier with my choice of big bores.
