I love the pre-priming stage. I never really thought of approaching it like that, but it makes so much sense!
All of those textures / damages certainly show up nicely when painting!
I love this channel. The quality of the content goes without saying, but the dedication to the community is also very impressive! Every comment has a reply of acknowledgement.
Thank you kindly man! The community is massive to us and your feedback helps us no end 🙌
Hey I dunno if this comment is gonna be read or not, but I find this tutorial by far the best one for simply explaining the process of lighten your base color then through the reductive technic darken him +++
This tutorial also made me buy an airbrush, which is such a pleasure for me to use...
I followed the video step by step and I've learned a lot.
Thank you Grim Dark Compendium for giving us for free this course :-)
Vilany ink forever 🔥
@@postgarodegoogle2389 awesome!! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for the kind words! 🙌 I’m so glad you liked the tutorial and found some inspiration! Have fun with the airbrush, it’s a great tool and lets you pull off some nice effects whilst also saving lots of time!
> How grimy should the backpack be?
TGDC: "yes."
Can’t beat a grimy backpack!
Who knew Ralph Ineson was into Warhammer? But seriously, your videos are the best! Insanely good painting style
Ahah, we keep telling him. He sounds exactly like him.
Aha thankyou! That’s high praise!
It's uncanny. I came to the comments to see what the deal was.
Epic!
Thank you!
I cant even paint 10% as good as he paints damn this looks freaking amazing well done!
Thank you!
Looks fantastic... Sadly I'd probably cry after finishing such a Marine and then looking at the rest of the unpainted squad 😂
Thank you!
Nicely done. More than I prefer but great to see product application , great video.
Thank you!
Wonderful! Welcome to the Compendium! Can't wait to see more!
Thank you kindly! 🤝
amazing work. world class weathering right there.
Thank you! 🙌
This guy's voice is amazing. He should really think about doing the voice for a 40k audio book.
great vid, marines really shine when gritty
Thanks! Indeed. More incoming.
Thank you!
Grimmdark! Paint a word bearer and my life is yours!
Jokes aside another lovely scheme for one of my top 3 traitor legions!
Word Bearers are definitely on our list!
Thanks man!
Очень Круто!!! Вот так должны выглядеть космодесантники!!!
Thank you!
Gorgeous! Clear, concise instructions and I have to say a nice voice - sometimes the way people sound just switches my brain off and I can't grasp what they're saying at all. I found this video fascinating, entertaining and educational and as someone who has, finally and very recently acquired an air compressor, I appreciate the addition of what pressure to spray at; I haven't used the thing to paint with at all yet, barely had it running to make sure it works, so this is very pertinent information for me as I'm a little bit daunted about starting to learn how to use the airbursh, I have used one of those hand held things to experiment with but obviously a proper airbrush is more complicated to use.
Thank you for the kind words!
The airbrush is a great tool and really isn’t as daunting as it first seems!
Once you get some practise in you’ll love it!
@@BlackChaliceStudio
I'm hoping so, as using the little cheap one was really fun but that has constant airflow, no adjustments and a single action mechanism so it was really simplistic to use.
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate that and the encouragement, looking forward to the next video :D
This is absolutely gorgeous an awesome tutorial!
Thank you kindly! 🤝
Can't push the like button enough.
Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you! 🙌
I have never thought about adding texture to the model before priming, sounds amazing!
Valid option. Can be done before or after painting, via the soft pressing technique.
It’s a good technique for sure! As is the aforementioned soft pressing to really push the variety of textures!
Awesome as ever man.
This technique works wonders with Iron Hands and Iron Warriors. It just suits their legion styles
Thanks man! I’m really looking forward to iron hands / warriors lots of corrosion and slick oil / grease on the mechanical parts 👌
@@BlackChaliceStudio thats howmy entire Iron Warriors army looks lol.
All except Peter Turbo and his Iron Circle. They have been done prestine so they pop against the legionaries.
Just love that way of texturing, and battle damage before even priming. It is so easy to do, and is essential on HH era mk3, Cataphracti and Tartaros armours.
An instant classic video! Awesome!
Thanks man! 🙌
Lovely stuff!
Thank you!
Great painting 👍👍
Thank you!
Thankyou!
While I love love love the many effects and the final result of this and many other pieces you make, i feel that sometimes it's either too much or in places where there shouldnt be.
Too much as in it sometimes softens/covers the details of the minis.
Or in parts where there shouldnt be like in the backpack "exhaust" (That's meant to be basically an engine/reactor that would be bad if it gets covered or damaged by rust so i guess it would be somewhat cleaned/maintained from time to time) or the guns (to prevent jamming or breakage of it). I understand that in some situations (like muddy/swampy/toxic terrains) some dirt and grime can get in them but due to their use, they would not get as dirty as the rest of the armor. Still (and again) I LOVE these videos and I'm grateful of the work and explanation of your process. It's always very interesting and full of incredible tips.
Thank you! There’s definitely a lot of artistic license used during the weathering here, and it’s purely down to preference with the weathering, you can go a lot lighter if you like!
Completely my style, awesome job on the painting mate👌👌👌👌
Thanks man! 🙌
Love it!
Thank you!
Brilliant video, nice and grim as warhammer should look.
Thank you! 🙏
Thanks! 🙌
So damn good.
Thanks man! 🤝
Waiting for my Villainy inks order to come so loved this but come on now - we can do more than 0.5 milliseconds of the finished mini please :D
Wow outstanding video. Really captures what I imagine the Sons of Horus would look like in the siege of terra. Curious at what stage if any would you apply transfers?
Thank you! If applying transfers I’d get them on before the unifying wash stage.
Gotta see iron Warriors now
Stay tuned! 👌
so damn good
Thank you!
Thanks!
I love how you're style is heavily weathered but not muddy or washed out. I see so many grim dark paint jobs or blanchitsu paint jobs that are just a big patchy mess of browns. But I like that your can still see the sea green of the armor. I'm curious, what colors would you use for a heresy space wolves armor?
Thank you kindly! Heresy wolves may be incoming, pro acryl bright neutral grey would be a nice solid base to weather down from!
❤❤❤
This is sweet as hell!
What would you recommend as a base colour to do the chipping on black armour for Raven Guard?
Thank you! 🙌 hull red will work well for chipping on black armour too, you could also add a touch of red to lighten it up which would add more of a stark contrast when the chips are revealed under the black.
Well, no channel has the amazing voices that you can find on the Grimdark Compendium. Still, too bad I can't use the washes. No matter how vigorously I shake or how long, how well I mix them with mineral spirits, they stay glossy and shiny. Ah well.
Thank you!
Have you watched the villainy ink tutorials on the Grimdark compendium? They cover the various application methods in detail.
I add 2 glass agitator beads to mine and they help blend up the binder and the pigment really well when shaking.
Carrion crimson, coelia green and ichor of the damned have an intended satin to gloss finish due to them being designed for effects!
Have you guys noticed any variation in what brand of chipping medium you use? I notice you use AK pretty frequently. I use Vallejo, and I feel like it chips quite big, no matter how much I thin it (though I'm chipping yellow, so lotsa coats).
I’ve yet to try a different brand but I know ak make 2 different versions, worn effects as shows here and heavy effects which produces larger chips.
One thing worth trying with Vallejo is generally the longer you allow the chipping medium to dry before working it the harder it is to remove so perhaps leave it a good while before you apply the armour base colours and begin the chipping.
Being harder to remove it might mean you can make smaller chips.
Questions you usually start with texture paint.
Lets say instead of them fighting on dirt, they where fighting in a city or on a forge world/giant factory.
Would you still start with the texture paint?
There are lots of different types of texture paints that give differing finishes so you could indeed apply them to simulate built up dust / rubble debris.
The pre priming texture stage is also handy for giving the look of general wear and tear!
Merci pour la vidéo
Thanks!
Thank you!
WOWWWW
Thanks!
Thank you!
can you do this for a 100 model army?
It would take some time for sure! You could batch paint in squads of 5 or even 10 to cut down the overall time a good bit.
How do you make sure the pigment powder doesn't blow or rub off?
Once cure enamels are permanent.
I personally don’t seal pigments once applied as I find they lose their powdery effect.
If using minis for gaming purposes or if they’ll be handled regularly they can be fixed in place using a pigment fixer or spirits, but they will lose some of their fresh powdery look.
4:38 how does a wet brush remove dried paint from a mini, whut?
The chipping medium I applied before the armour colors can be reactivated with water for around an hour, by wetting the surface and using a suitable tool you can create very realistic chips!
@@BlackChaliceStudio oooh i didn't realise you had to use a "medium" for that. what medium exactly, maybe i missed it?
@@ishitrealbad3039I used ak interactive worn effects here, it’s a great product! I apply the chipping colour first then after allowing that to fully dry apply the chipping medium followed by the armour colors then dampen the armour panels using clean water then chip away gently using an old pin / brush.
@@ishitrealbad3039I use ak interactive worn effects here!
Can you please do a guide for grimdark stormcast eternals?
Blanche had some paintings of them
I’m sure we can cook something up! There are some stormcast videos over on the compendium too!
They might be coming up later this year also in our Cities of Sigmar series.
why must people keep clipping off the helmet spike? it's perfect for the setting. some many people disagree with me on this and i can't fathom why. it's freaking cool XD
Whilst I did like the look of the spike I preferred the cleaner lines of the smoothed helmet!
@@BlackChaliceStudio well to each their own. still amazing work BTW
@@musicalDrebinthank you!
And in a coulpe of days will become private video...
videos that were on the channel are now member only? pay walling old content like that is super lame and most of the channel is gone now
i did not for the life of me know i could just use water to help chip armor.
Chipping medium is a great tool and gives some really realistic results!
@@BlackChaliceStudio i always want to pick up chipping medium but i dont own an air brush, so ive always hesitated.
@@IDHC_CBSicklesI’ll do some tests to see if it can still work with a brush application!

Aha thanks man!
Another masterpiece and has made me purchase paints just to do Sons of Horus.
Awesome! Have fun and stay tuned.
Thank you! Keep us updated on how your SOH turn out!
@@BlackChaliceStudio I can confirm my villainy inks Ichor of Damned arrived so will be doing washes following the guide step by step. I also have another 20 mk3 marines arrived as might try another legion
@@cykix9499 awesome! Stay tuned for my take on another chapter very soon!
@@BlackChaliceStudio now that's what I'm talking about. I'm thinking of doing a squad of 10 from each legion. These videos teach me so much and I honestly can say I'm improving each model. Keep it up and we in.th community will keep supporting !!!
