      No, they are not. Bloodwork is recommended in younger patients before anesthesia, and required in dogs over 6 or 7. Really depends on the clinic, but I feel this protocol is more common. It's to make sure your pets organs are working properly like the kidneys/liver, and can handle the anesthesia. We've diagnosed dogs with diabetes due to really high glucose from presurgical bloodwork and so we didn't do their surgery because it's too dangerous. Now, at the clinic I'm at, presurgical bloodwork is included in the surgery cost. Not every place is like that. And maybe some clinics do focus more on money, but certainly not all of them. Not the ones I've worked at. So, no vets are not holding guns to your heads🙄 if it's that big of a deal then go to a different clinic.

    There seems to be an increase in younger veterinarians that just are out to make the big buck. I don't think they really care about animals as much as money, their new cars and big homes. Also they don't realize that our pets, for many of us, are our family; in my case, I'm alone and my pets provide so much company to me. And I don't personally have thousands of $$ to pay a vet up front, before any treatment is given. So, yes, they take advantage of us because they know we will do as much as possible to help them. They won't even let you make a payment plan over time, because of their freaking greed. Come on vets, have some compassion for us and especially for our pets. I think this veterinarian took advantage of this poor man. Write an appropriate review on yelp.

      There are pet insurances you can buy for your pet and you can also apply for Care Credit. There are also some organizations that will help with vet bills. If it's an emergency, then I can understand running to the first vet they find. But people really need to do some research on their own because the vet doesn't have time to do it for them.

    • @mikaylaayers4949
      @mikaylaayers4949 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What's actually happening is that advances have occurred in medicine and better treatments are being recommended. Less was known "back in the day" and standards of care have changed. The cost of providing such services are enormous, an vets make far less than human doctors for the same amount of debt.
      Paying up front has now become the norm because so many pet owners have skipped out on the bill, and the vets must pay their bills (practice, meds, staff, lights/electric, and so on) because it is still a business that must be ran.
      There is a huge influx of owners who never give their dogs prevention and wait until pets are so sick it costs a LOT to try to heal them.
      Vets don't make as much as you think, especially when you take into account the vast debt they accumulate. The suicide rate for veterinarians is also incredibly high - one of the highest in any industry - due to debt, burnout, and compassion fatigue.
      People who believe these things make it harder for everyone else - pet owners and vets alike.

Most people also didn't take their pets to the vet for every little thing either, yearly shots and that's about it unless it was an emergency. Same testing (often same machines)... We also use a lab that has a human/veterinary side. Testing is expensive. Clients decline it often. However I've seen "healthy" pets expire under anesthesia when blood work would have noted it was unsafe. Can't count how many times 'their baby" was placed under anesthesia and complications arise after the owner declines the expense.
      How many human children are placed under anesthesia without blood work? I'm betting close to zero. Placing your pets under without the preanesthetic bloodwork puts your doctor behind from the start.
      Trends are seeing vets who DON'T require preoperative screening as malpractice.
      Get insurance. Vets are compassionate however business owners as well. Price an xray unit or even 1 surgery light. There is not a large hospital/organization behind it flipping those bills.

      You might want to check your calendar again. This is March, not February.

    I would not pay over $500 for a pet to go to a vet.. cancer? Weed brownies and enjoy the time left.

      Well depends on the age..an older dog (or severe inoperable cancer) yeah as I had that with my 12 year old dog with cancer that couldn't be operated on as she had tumors on her heart. But a 1 year old dog with a small tumor... I'd go through with treatment. Dogs can live a long life if they are missing a leg.

      Considering chocolate is toxic to dogs, I'd rethink the brownies.

      @@Aura983 also weed is toxic to dogs as well. As well as most human and illegal drugs.
