TH-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of TH-cam comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

Did you not hear the problems that were forthcoming in this very episode Alexander, regarding using unclear language. What exactly do you mean by proof? Are you misusing the term and being unclear purposely?
What did we miss out on learning? What seriously do you suppose we would have recieved as answers and explanations, especially given thier vague, disingenuous, rambling obscurantist horseshit up to the point of ejection.
Matt isn't bullying and haranguing them, certainly not undeservedly. He is merely attempting to cut down on the seemingly virtually essential endless meaningless preaching, time wasting, rambling, refusing to answer even simple questions and using obfuscationary tactics.
For me, he could get rid of few of them even sooner. ESPECIALLY the obviously dishonest ones who are clearly not discussing honestly, with integrity and in good faith. I would kick them even faster than Matt. Once they have clearly shown themselves, there is little reason to continue. Unless they are particularly entertaining I suppose.

@@martingrundy5475 , no. No. Matt has a very fundy idea of Islam, a bit like Sam Harris. They don't understand, they've never lived in Underistan. They think the World, that's to say, people, should be logical. And I agree. However, it's not the case.
It's very funny actually, because, clearly, he is brilliant, Matt is, but also, when it comes to things like government or science, he's as intelligent as dog's dildo, a chewy one. The poor guy, I so do feel for him. His sex life is so less than optimal. Sigjh.
Anyway, thank you for your response, there. It resonates with me on the wavelength of 'angry aatheist'. I am very angry, but I'm not a criminal. I think fundy places should have a health warning above the door. I'll be happy when that becomes a law :-0
Sorry, yeah, so, to answer your question, um, what we could have learned more about is, about, um, moderrate Islam. Yeah, I know it makes not logical sense, like you know, in view of the horrible things in the Qu'ran, but, somehow they mush it up with the Suna and the Hadith (which there are two and more competing versions of) and somehow, in their minds they make a religious smoothy.
And, and, and, and, all these religious pillocks make more babies than us atheists do.

They teach you to look for errors in the Koran as a method to get student to pay good attention. Then if they find an error, the teacher can explain how to read it "correctly" so that they can control the narrative. They will explain how it isn't an error, that it just looks like that to in informed readers.
It reassures that the students all leave with the same outlook on it.
That way you don't have 30 kids with 30 different interpretations.
My point is that Matt is wrong when he used it against Aziz. He used it as if it was a contradiction. If a student found an error, then it means the student does not understand it. So they can fix it.
In fact, if Matt allowed Aziz to speak, the passage about killing the non believers, is one of those "errors".
I heard someone defend that against a Christian. If what he said was true, it absolutely changes what that passage means.
Im 100% atheist and don't think any of it is real but I will still say something when things get blown in wrong directions.
What the guy said was that it was a speech during a battle or war. They were fighting against non believers.
So all the talk about killing the non believers was about that specific battle. Just like Marines might have said the exact same thing about the Japanese on Tarawa or something.
So Aziz is not lying. He is trying to explain it.. but he can't speak English good enough. Matt wouldn't even give him time to think of the words.
So Aziz learned that those verses did not apply to the world. Only the situation. So I defend Aziz at that point.
But... going against aziz. The Marines didn't target the Japanese because they were Japanese. It was just war.
The Muslims targeted non believers because they were non believers. So they would still be wrong and still be killing them.
The reason I even mention this is that even as atheists, we need to be smart. If there is a missing context that matters, we look bad if we strawman and don't stay open. That way they can ignore are points because we don't listen. But if we argue, from facts, it creates doubt in their mind and we win

I was responding to your claim that had the hosts said "nope we can't be certain about our wives just like you can't be certain about god" and you said they should have just used his own argument against him: I was saying that is not a good strategy because he would agree with that. I'm not making a false equivalency, the caller made this analogy, not me, I'm telling you what the caller's end game with this is, and his end game is "we can't be certain about tons of things and you believe them, things like your wife loves you, therefore I'm ALSO justified in believing in this god thing that I can't be certain of." We agree the CALLER is making a false equivalency because we can have tons of EVIDENCE that our wives love us while we have none for a god; I was responding to your strategy to deal with the call and explaining why I don't think it would have worked.

@@AbleAnderson And I was elaborating. My first comment was flippant: just "meet him where he's at." He was inplying you can't have confidence in either, which defeats his own position if assumed. He was trying to assert both are either equally unreasonable or equally reasonable. They're not.
So, as I pointed out, you can just discard the argument. I decided to be flippant about it and sarcastically accept the argument by saying "okay, there's no reason to believe my wife loves me, and no reason to believe in God. Done."

End of Carlos' thing. "I choose to believe my wife loves me. Because I can't know for certain. I don't have proof." That's a false dichotomy. As Matt says, you don't choose your beliefs. You can't "choose to believe" that you can fly. Or that it will rain apple juice tomorrow at noon. Well, not and be justified. You believe that which you're convinced of. And you can be convinced for good or bad reasons.
So, restated "I believe my wife loves me. I don't have definitive proof (which I still haven't defined, despite multiple requests). But I do have evidence for the premise that 'my wife loves me' sufficient that I am convinced that it's true."

At about 40:48 Don rightly advises Matt to not make a big deal about Matt's argument about choosing beliefs. Matt won't even consider taking Don's advice and doubles down on his position. If you're not open minded enough to even consider the thoughtful position of your co-host, maybe you should reflect on your own position.
Matt here (as he often does) is having a one on one conversation with the caller that excludes Don.
Then Matt hangs up on the caller without checking whether Don is done with the caller because he's butt hurt by the caller asking to finish his statement sans interruption. Really ironic considering Matt's reaction when he gets interrupted.

Matt was brutal with Aziz. It was obvious that Aziz was saying there are no errors in Koran. He meant you look for what you THINK are errors. When you find one the instructor could explain how it isn't an error. It would be like christian finding slavery in the Bible then teacher would twist it to make it good.
Matt ended up getting it but he crushed Aziz. Aziz could barely speak English and Matt wouldn't let him speak. It wasn't educational because Aziz couldn't get a word out. If Matt let him speak, he could have used his exact words to get him to understand. Aziz left thinking Matt didn't understand him. That helps no one.
