You bring up the point about how game companies don’t like to take risks anymore and only play it safe but I think that might change in the near future.
This current economic downturn means less people are going to be willing to buy these $70 bloated messes if they don’t feel it’s worth it. Just look at the absurd success of Lethal Company.
The late 2010s and the early part of this decade were pretty shit for AAA gaming, but just imagine if enough people decide to skip buying the latest cod or fifa because they think it’s not worth the little bit of spending money they have at the moment. If this continues, I think we’ll see more companies step up their game and start making quality products that people will actually buy.

Last year, I played through all the Max Payne games in a row. The first two games for the first time actually, Max Payne 3 for the third time. I've come to love the trilogy very much.
Every game is a hit. Yet, I still adore Max Payne 3 the most. It might be due to bias since I played it more often and it being my first game in the series. I love it to death and I cannot help it.
It was the perfect ending for Max. For his suffering. He swore off the alcohol and I made my Max swore off the painkillers too once he shaved his head. He is finally free.
It's a perfect trilogy with 3 delivering a perfect ending. It made me think that I'd never want a new Max Payne game.
The only other game series that really made me feel this way was Hotline Miami.
Like you pointed out, the lines of "TEARS" ring true. It really was time to let it go. Simply because the time could've never been more right to do just that.

I'm going to give all Payne 3 players a tip who are on pc, turn off both the crosshair target aquisition from turning itself red when it hovers over an enemy and turn off killmarkers which make it turn into an x momentarily when a kill is achieved; when you do this the shootouts become so, so much more visceral and enjoyable; the results being that instead of seeing everything and enjoying the desperate situation Max is in; you are only shooting when the crosshair turns red-- it keeps you locked into looking only at that; if you turn it off, you begin spraying rounds in the enemies general vicinity and when you don't know when they die, your brain isn't going to get locked in a pattern of only spraying a predetermined amount of lead in repetition; it makes more surpriseing moments and keeps your head clear to enjoy everything so much more. It's much more emergent; and not to mention authentic to the originals!

Your videos are well edited, well scripted and cool as hell. Great work! The grittyness and artstyle combined with the groundbreaking shooting-mechanics is a winning combination. We share the same love for Max Payne 3 and you did the game justice with this one. Along with GTA 4 and Sleeping Dogs, MP3 is one of my favorite games. Would love to get your take on probably my favorite in-game world, Liberty City through the eyes of Niko Bellic.

I play this game on PC in 2021, and found it amazing.
Story, ambiance (portuguese voices and subtitles, music in the favelas), and variety are incredible. Intensity is cool and didn't exist in Rockstar open-worlds.
I also like gameplay, louder than many TPS, but everything has more impact.
It's shorter than open-worlds, but whereas them, I've often launch a chapter (after each game I finish, I play MP3 before choosing a new game).
After RDR1 on Switch, I think a port to new platforms will be very cool, and it will be a beautiful game on Switch.

I also look at it as Max has gotten older and years of addiction and alcoholism has slightly deminsed his, let's call it, flair for poetic ways of speaking and is just now so much more blunt and worn down. Also the fact that this is the first game where Max really yells because he know he is so close to ending all this horrible shit that he has been thrust into the middle of.
On of my absolute favorite scenes is right after Victor and Becker get away and lock the door and after kicking the door and it not opening Max just screams " GOD DAMN IT"
It really creates that sense that while Max has seen some horrific shit, it's nothing compared to what he has been through in Brazil and so instead of speaking in the typical Noir style, he is just fucking feed the fuck up and I think it really works

You didn't miss out dude. What you see on the screen is a generic GTA clone. The world is completely different, the story is somehow shallow, slow and confusing, all at once, and the guy you are playing as don't look or sound like mp, just has the same voice. The secret ending of mp2 is the end of Max's story and this krap is not cannon.

I have played through this game twice. I think it isn't a bad game at all, it's good, despite console version aiming being terrible. It just doesn't feel like Max Payne game. It lacks that Remedy tongue in cheek humor mixed with drama and action. It is just too serious and the plot imo isn't something incredible, really.

The story in this doesn't fail as a Max Payne story because it doesn't check the right neo noir boxes. The problem is that it's just not a Max Payne story at all. It's more like a GTA game that happens to be more brooding. The Denis Leary Ford F-150 commercial story presentation doesn't do it any favors either. Sam Lake and Dan Houser do not have similar or compatible writing sensibilities and I don't think Houser is a great writer for this game anymore than Sam Lake would be for, say, Red Dead. Lake gave us a a level of subtlety Houser is not interested in giving us. There's also a comical absurdity in both Remedy games that shines through in both background elements as well as the actual narrative. When True Detective season 2 came out everyone made fun of Vince Vaughn's dialogue and I was sitting there looking for Sam Lake's name in the credits. That wasn't an accident either as the drug hallucination scenes in Max Payne made it pretty clear that Lake knew what kind of dialogue he was writing and told us in a subtle way what kind of dialogue he was writing while simultaneously doing it all with a straight face.
I'm also not willing to give the game a break in unskippable cutscenes because even though I understood they were making load times it was still poorly conveyed and also highlighted just how egregious some of these load times could be. I can't say enough nice things about the game once I'm done seeing it's cutscenes and playing it finally though. Completing New York Minute mode is still on my bucket list. I endured scores of Russian and, ironically, Brazilian trainer and aimbot users to enjoy the multiplayer because it was that damn good.

Totally fair. And I do prefer the writing from 1 and 2, to be clear. I can definitely see your point.

Kane & Lynch video that I loved, Andre The Giant avatar, and now I'm watching another video praising Max Payne 3 and nodding heavily in agreement in the first 5 minutes. You might be the long lost brother I never had or at the very least a co-worker I could shoot the shit with over nerdy stuff while we try to make the best out of another dull day at work.
I groaned when reviewers completely missed the cutscenes masking the loading screens and I groaned even louder when the Max Payne 1 and 2 superfans whinged about Sao Paulo being too sunny for a noir story. They acted as if Chinatown, In a Lonely Place and LA Confidential never existed and how much influence the very sunny and bright Los Angeles has had on noir media, arguably more than NYC. Another common complaint was the comic strips were gone (damned if you do, damned if you don't considering they would have been criticized for doing "more of the same/unoriginal design" if they kept them) but Rockstar put their own stamp on the visual design. Also, suddenly they were "ripping off" movies. Funny how a studio known for making games that absolutely wore film influences on their sleeves, and still do to this day, didn't face those same criticisms for Vice City and San Andreas or when they straight up lifted the satire style of Robocop for all GTA games. Vice City may not have been the first but it was the first time I was blown away they got a legitimate movie star like Ray Liotta to voice the main character.
The gameplay to this day is still Rockstar's best and I fear they'll never take the time to match it. The transitions from cutscene to gameplay were always thrilling and kept me on the edge of my seat because I never knew what was going to pop off even if I knew SOMETHING was coming. Awesome video and I'm looking forward to catching up on your older videos.

@@HyperTensionJohnny Story was dumb. I played it when it came out, don't remember details but it was just stupid die hard nonsense.
The lines Max was saying meant nothing. Compared to Max Payne 2 where every line is a quote, art and pure literature, sometimes mocking the noir style, sometimes being too edgy, but most times very deep.
Max being self aware had more weight and pain in his life. He knew he was a broken man and that held him down.
in third game, he knows his a broken man, acts out, and that somehow builds rage for him to become Steven Seagull.
Second game played great that his personality and deep drepression was torturing him, only 'fun' he could have is when he was killing people and that made it even worse. Everything was perfectly stacked together to give you a complex character with complex issues who just couldn't help himself and turn his life around. Him feeling guilty for his family's death, guilty to feel attraction towards Mona (feeling he was cheating on his dead wife), seeing horrible dreams that somehow, in a twisted sense had logic in them and attack in his weakensses.
I don't know man, second game was pure art, third was a Guns palooza bazuuka 'murica gringo shooter. I liked how inventory worked and gameplay, but story was just soooooooooo bad

Considering the game depicts the rich and wealthy as complete immoral assholes and it’s made by rockstar(a company that consistently makes fun of right wingers) I would say it’s fairly left leaning if you absolutely had to look at it through a political lens. Believe it or not a majority of what’s considered the best media out there is extremely left leaning. Bioshock being a good example that most people misconstrue to be a right wing game.

"Generic Rockstar game" what does that even mean. Mate, did you even play any Rockstar games in the PS2/Xbox and PS3/360 days? They were one of the most unique studios/publishers out there, before GTA Online ruined everything by earning them a billion dollars a year in profits from total suckers, making stuff like Manhunt, Bully, The Warriors, Midnight Club, Red Dead: Redemption, a fucking phenomenal Table Tennis game of all things and published a hell of a lot of games. They did the console port of Max Payne 1 and published both games. They were the ONLY choice for a third Max Payne game since Remedy wanted to do something different and Remedy might not even be around today if they didn't sell off the rights. To say they didn't care is just disrespectful to the developers and untrue. They were about to change the voice actor, true, but what changed their mind again? The fans and they listened and corrected it.
Who's developing the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes now and who's funding those remakes? Remedy and Rockstar, respectively.
I dislike nowadays Rockstar with their ultra greedy MTX and "console ports now, full priced buggy ass PC port a year and a half later" strategies as much as anyone but calling their catalogue of games "generic" is blatantly false and comes off as fanboy whinging.
