Review of Canon 100-400mm II | Still worth buying in 2021?!

  • This is my long term #review of the #Canon #100-400mm F/4.5-5.6L IS II after almost 4 years of regular use. I talk about all the #pros & #cons I've discovered and show you some of my #best #sample #images taken with this lens.
    The question remains: in the current world of mirrorless cameras, is it worth #upgrading to the new #RF 100-500mm lens or stick with this one for considerably less #money? Will it produce similar #results in terms of #image #quality or fall considerably behind the new revamped #version for mirrorless systems?

      Thanks a lot Adrian. I have wanted to review this lens for ages. Your video last weekend must have inspired me to finish it!😀 I need to test it with the DCR-250 snap on lens, and see how much better it would be than the standard zoom lens I tested the other week on an APS-c body for macros. Have a great weekend & looking forward to watching your next upload later!😉👌👌📸

    Great review on this lens. I was fortunate enough to get this one a few years back as a gift from a friend who wasn't using it and what a lens it is. So happy. I use it in a lot of wildlife and pet photography. Love using it so much that I even tried it on some portrait outdoor photography and because of the quality of the glass in this lens, I loved it even in portraits outdoors. What an incredible lens it is. I have a older version, so I used the converter ring with my mirrorless and don't lose any quality or focus timing. Thank you Peter. Another amazing confirmation on a great product and happy to have seen this review, learned a bit more of technical things about my lens thanks to you.

    I think there is a misunderstanding of cropfactor and extender. Cropfactor means the pic is crop 1.4x from the fullframe, extender means it extend the focal length of a lens. So apsc camera doesnt mean it extend the focal length of a lens. It simply crop the pic 1.4x from the fullframe.
    Correct me if i was wrong. Thank u.

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Riki, thanks for your feedback. The crop factor in Canon’s APS-C lineup is 1.6x, in Nikon cameras it’s 1.5x. You’re correct as in the actual physical focal length doesn’t change obviously but due to the change in field of view e.g. a 400mm telephoto lens gives you the equivalent of a 640mm lens on a full frame when using a body such as the 80D of mine. The extenders do physically “alter” the focal length by adding a lens element but with considerable degradation in image quality and AF performance, especially with the 2x extender as briefly mentioned. Hope this helps. Thanks again for watching & I hope you’re well!😉👍

    • @peterviragphoto
      @peterviragphoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lawrence. I haven’t noticed such & on the R7 it provides you with the equivalent of 640mm on full frame. I’m loving it on the R7, performs really well w/o any issues. Good luck with whichever lens you end up buying. Here in Australia the RF 100-500 is so much more expensive so I’d still go with the EF version. Thanks for watching. Cheers

    Many TH-cam comments on this lens' 3 IS Modes are not entirely correct and have been very confusing because the commentator has no Canon Manual or has not read it. Canon Manual states: Mode 1 is for Stationary Subjects (eg Portrait or Landscape) and corrects hand motion in both horizontal and vertical. Mode 2 is for Moving Subjects and corrects hand motion in both horizontal and vertical and is activated by half pressing the shutter release before you take your picture. Mode 3 is the same as Mode 2 except that IS is activated after AF is set and before the shutter is released when you take the picture. This allows a more precise image capture and also conserves on battery power. Canon Manuals are available online.

      Hey Scotty that is unusual. Focus breathing can happen on occasions but I’ve never had any real issues, it’s 99% of the time very fast and accurate at all focal lengths. It’s interesting that yours is having issues at 400mm, The lens can be noisy though especially when image stabilisation is active. Thanks for your comment. If you can’t get close enough and the bird species is tiny then yes it can be a struggle at times but it certainly is enough for bird photography. You can always opt to use an extender or use it on an APS-c body to circumvent the relatively low focal length. It might be better for you to go for something like the Sigma 150-600 or the Tamron equivalent. Good luck whichever you chose. Stay safe and enjoy photography! All the best!:)

      Hi there. The 100-400 works at 800mm, e.g. on a body like the 80D, even though you lose AF points through the viewfinder, the dual pixel cmos still works in live view and the focal length will be doubled. Note: this is the 3rd iteration of the teleconverter & in most cases primes with f/4 beyond the 500mm focal length work better .

      @@peterviragphoto My question was concerning the RF 100-500mm $3000.00 usd lens , not the 100-400. Another channel said attaching a 2x extender on it limited its range specifically stops it at 300mm. I probably gotta email Canon N. America for exact limitation. Thanks.

      @Dan The Man sorry misunderstood/misread your comment . That’s pretty meh ( esp. With that pricetag ), thx for clearing that up. Hopefully Canon will provide you with an explanation. Good luck!

    I feel the still worth buying on 2021 or 22 or 23 now are entirely irreverent. if this lens is an L lens from 1995 and has ultrasonic motor it is still worth buying.

      You’re totally right Renee! Release dates aren’t as relevant as one would normally expect especially with L series lenses but some people aren’t aware of that. I still agree ( might change the title haha ). Have a great weekend!

    100-500 is so much better for rf.

      You mean a native lens is better for a specific mount? What’s the surprise there? Also define “much better”. It’s not much better, has its own strengths and weaknesses. One primary negative is light loss at the equivalent 400mm focal length, besides being significantly more expensive. This video was not a comparison either.
