I really wish modern Hollywood could display the same kind of determined ingenuity, originality and talent on display in these late 70's early 80's productions. Film just feels, pardon the pun, Dead these days. At least we can still look back at classics like this and be reminded of what film can be. Great video Minty.

I saw this at my local cinema in the UK when I was 17 (underage for an X cert), it had already been released on VHS at this point but was doing so well it had a limited cinema run. My pal and I were really shook up by it as it was so much more effective scares wise on the big screen. Weeks later one dark evening walking through a narrow way surrounded by trees I said, 'it's just like the evil Dead', we turned and looked at each screamed and ran, even later I couldn't even bare the sound of it if I heard it in the background on TV. Never underestimate the power of seeing a horror at a cinema. Can't believe that was 40 years ago.

I got my Daughter hooked on this series. She was sold when we went through The Evil dead house at Universal's Halloween horror nights. While in the House one of the Ashes walked up to her, took a knee, and kissed her hand. He was officially her hero from that day forward. Anything with Ash in it she wants to see. (She's 10) She's been a Horror nut since she was little. She's been doing HHN since she was 3. When someone at HHN in one of the lines asked her why she's not scared she said "Why? They're just people in masks. It's fun!" Her Godfather is a make-up artist, who worked on the Evil dead remake. Even gave her a full latex mask he made of The Creeper from Jeepers creepers. Still Evil dead is her fav series.

Which I think is pretty cool how they started out making short films from home only to finish off their biggest project at home

I love the autobiography of Bruce Campbell. I don't read that often but my brother had a copy of it and I remember for the shaky cam of the demonic entity that the camera was done up on a two by four or something with two people runing in the woods with it. Also there was a recipe in the books for the fake blood they used on set and they actually slept in the house for the shoot while it was pretty cold for them at the time. I think they also premiered the movie in a old abandoned post office at halloween to screen the movie to some friends. Fun stuff Sam Rami and the boys did. I think they grew up using super 8 home films.

Interesting side note when Evil Dead two was released my friends and i went to a preview showing shortly before its wide release. The crowd was in a frenzy we loved it. When we left the theater my friend who was a film student at the time spotted Sam and the Cohen brothers leaving the screening. We told them how much we loved it. They seemed very surprised we knew who they were. Then we immediately blew it by saying we liked Crimewave. A film they considered a complete disaster. evil dead is still my favorite film series. I even do a yearly binge watch of all 3 movies as well as all 3 seasons of the show. I even made myself a chainsaw hand prop out of a real chainsaw that took me an entire summer to build.

Fun fact the female woman in the cover with Bruce Campbell is non other than Bridgette Hoffman; who is also a famous voice actress who did anime voice works such as: Lain Iwakura from Serial Experiment lain, Bell Dandy from Ah! My Goddess, Please Teacher as Kei Kazami, and etc.

You threw me at the start, I thought we were looking at the original cabin until I recognised all the Aussie fauna. Great work. I agree with so many of your comments it's bizarre. Evil Dead 2 is the pinnacle of the series for me too. I wonder who your favourite Doctor is?

Evil Dead was filmed full frame, the widescreen version crops off the top and bottom. Watch the full screen or full frame version, it's better.
The old vhs and dvd masters used to be fun picking out the accident of film crew standing in the woods as the car drove over the bridge. Recent HD masters have him digitally removed. Sad.
