7 months later we know China can make 7nm chips. But I want to catch up with you on EUV Lith Machine for chip making for 5nm, 3nm and even further: China has figured out that they REALLY DON'T NEED ASML Lith Machine for EUV lights. The EUV light is used to create the 5nm, 3nm or even 2nm chips. But instead of coming up with its own complicated Lith Machines for EUV lights, China simply built a 1K square kilometers LITH FACTORY. They don't need a machine to build chips. They simply built a factory to build chips. So the light will travel across the factory over hundreds of meters. And they could go through stages to extract the proper wavelength lights for any chip developments. The LITH FACTORY could support 28nm, 14nm, 7nm, 5nm, 3nm, 2nm and even further, you name it.
China realized that they don't need to have small form factors of Lith Machines that need to ship across oceans. They just need a mechanism to build chip. That mechanism could be as big as a factory. So China created a LITH FACTORY for chip making. Amazing!

So the ban will force the Chinese to use domestic-made 25nm chips, it is 4 times bigger, but for most applications it makes no difference. This is what Chinese proverb calls drink poison to quench thirst. Technology is intrinsic and require only human capital, capital that China has more than anyone, where as ASML's monopoly is extrinsic, it requires others to cooperate and can't be created by will.
It's inevitable for China to build what ASML have, but it's impossible for ASML to ever go back to a world where there's only one player in town.
Companies built around monopolies tend to do badly when they lose it, and they tend to do VERY badly if they lose the world's biggest customer to their new competitor.
By forcing ASML down this route, America has started a irreversible process that's almost guaranteed to end in ASML's collapse.

There is now an analysis and speculation that China has adopted different technical routes for the light source of litho machines. As we all know, in order to export and transport across oceans, ASML's litho machines must be miniaturized.
In fact, China does not lack EUV light sources, even is the world leader. What troubling the researchers is how to miniaturize them.
But now, under U.S. sanctions, a lot of Chinese institutions and enterprises are focusing on domestic needs and no longer expecting international orders. They directly use ultra-large-scale light source which originally used for experiments and hydrogen fusion.
Relying on one huge accelerator to supply multiple lithography production lines at the same time, separating the light source and lithography machine is likely to be the China's answer.

China is now building the world's first SSMB-EUV light source based on laser modulated synchrotron radiation, i.e. particle accelerator.
Compared to ASML's LPP-EUV, which blasts liquid Tin pellets with laser, SSMB-EUV has superior power, more continuous power output, narrower wavelength range, smaller wavelength and continuously adjustable wavelength. i.e. pitch at silicon physical limits with maximum yield.
Only drawback is the accelerator is big and can't be shipped, which isn't a problem for China.
Not that China isn't also building LPP-EUV, they also have a prototype of that machine to hedge their bets, but if SSMB-EUV comes online, ASML becomes obsolete with no hope of ever catching up.

Very true! China invented the modern Lithography tech, Burn-Jeng Lin was ignored by the chinese government and ASML grew from 30 employees to the current giant! China just bought from other countries instead of develop within while at the same time Taiwan expanded inhouse development. China is now forced to do the same... so it's just a matter of time. We need to work MUCH harder!

Not as fast as it could be. What people fail to understand is that Chinese business are exactly that - businesses responding to market forces. If they have an option to obtain technology from abroad, they're not going to reinvent the wheel. The Chinese government has tried mightily to change this dynamic but results have been mixed.
These curbs change everything. Now cash-rich Chinese fabs are going to invest in toolmakers and do whatever it takes to bring them up to speed.

Did you even notice TSM stocks have been tanking in price since Biden's announcement of the ban? It's because China bought most of TSM's chips. The ban will cause TSM to lose a lot of revenue... China already has the chip design technology, it just has not machine to make the chips due to the U.S. ban of ASML to sell China the machines. So, China now is looking into also making their own machines. TSM has no future. The drop in TSM's revenue will make TSM's competition with other chip makers like Intel, Samsung & Nvidia even more intense because the pie is cut much smaller by the USA. China buys 75% of the total chips made in the world.
