After a few years of using a honing guide, I started sharpening freehand. By removing the setup time of the honing guide, I find myself sharpening faster AND more frequently. It really is a win-win! 👍
I personally have never used a jig to sharpen tools. (Though I kinda want one specifically for wood turning gouges, because I am quite lousy at sharpening them.) I just can't see a reason to use one for the majority of cutting tools. Chisels are so absurdly easy to sharpen, I can't say I've never had trouble with one. Sure they aren't dead square, but tell me the last time you needed a PERFECTLY square chisel. Knives, sharpening them has always been so easy, I could not imagine putting one in a jig.
Thanks for the how-to Paul! I always enjoy watching and learning from you! I'm a retired ironworker (46 years) who wants to learn relief and spoon wood carving. I now have a good basic set of gouges etc and all the right sharpening plates and strops. I'm getting myself set up in a spare room for this coming winter when I have to close my little shop until spring. I have designed some patterns like I do when I make whirligigs. It has been over 50 years since I was an art student. I have a nice collection of erasers now lol. Enjoyed, take care!
Been sharpening like this everyday since I learned it from you about 12 years ago. Haven't even tried other ways. It just works. Even if I have to take it to a wheel first to remove a chip, I'm right back on my 300, 600, 1000 and strop. Thanks for showing us again.
@@TimeLess049 diamond plates. I think they started at 300, 600, 1000 and strop with green compound. For everything but my Japanese stuff and then I drag out the ceramics.
Thank you for this. I lost my dad last year and have his tools...watched him sharpen many times but good to have you show me again. His chisels hold many memories for me as a wee boy growing up, and his one sharpening stone. Much appreciated
You earned a sub with me. That was the easiest and quickest video I have ever seen about this. You got right into it, didn't mess around. Simple, easy, and back to work. Thanks!!
Glad to learn a simple traditional method. Every other bloke on TH-cam had some new device that will give you the perfect edge and of course they just happen to have a link to the retailer!
Thank you for this. I used cheap wood chisels for actually cleaning my concrete truck. But getting the edge super fine as to not damage the paint and remove the stuck on mud is a task. This really helped!
I've tried a couple of different methods as someone that does this as a hobby. Just do what Paul says. Diamond stones are so convenient and easy to use compared to something like water stones.
Ahhh the Mr. Paul method. K. I. S. S. Keep It Sharp Silly! A neverending treat of knowledge and teaching moments. Blessings Mr Paul and Crew Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
What a concept! - Future-proofing woodworking! I love your channel - many thanks. It just occurs to me the affinity between craft and Imperial measurement - as much as I appreciate the metric system I have a sense that Imperial measure is so appropriate for wood working.
I love the convex edge created by this method. Essentially giving me the microbevel so often touted, without having to readjust a jig or my wrists, etc.
The angle is the most critical aspect. Thanks for the video. I'm not as meticulous, so I have 2 sets of chisels. One set for fine work. One set that can be abused. And I never loan my good set to anyone.
I like having the 3 stones together on the wooden board. Sprayed them all at the same time, then run the chisel over each one after another. Sure beats taking out one stone at a time, putting it in a holder, spraying it, using it, removing it, taking out the next stone, putting it in a holder, ... etc.
Paul. Can I please get some idea/links for the products (blocks)..? Also ryoba, japanese saw, any good ideas, lots of mixed reviews and keen to use japanese saws for joinery.
First start with a perfect looking chisel! You might take longer on my chisels - rusty, pitted, blunt, odd angles, paint splodges, used as cold chisels and screwdrivers, and to stir paint!
I like how he doesn't use secondary or micro-bevels either. I did that for years, but moved away from that recently. With micro bevels you eventually have to pay the piper by spending time grinding down to a fresh primary bevel. Establishing a new primary bevel either means a lot of time with sandpaper on a lapping plate, or getting out the bench grinder and setting it up (my shop isn't big enough to have it out all the time). Micro bevels just cost me way more time in my context than taking a few extra seconds to sharpen one bevel. I'm also a member of a community workshop, where many people will be sharpening for their first or 10th time. The newbies are intimidated enough getting comfortable with freehand sharpening, with out the added fun of occasionally grabbing a chisel that needs to be taken back to square one. It's easier to have one bevel and maybe one day a year where you take that back to perfect.
This is what Paul is best at, tools and use techniques. I’m not interested in the work exercises, and don’t like his style of furniture, but by golly he can teach about tools.
For touching up the blade I just use 600 to about 1,000 for 12000 to Rouge on paper! I'd only go back to course if I had a Nick in the blade! But I have to agree with Paul the methodology works every time! Columbus Michigan
I was expecting you to start with only use the finest diamond plate. I pick up something from you in every video. Thank you for all the sharing. You have really changed my recreational woodworking.
I believe Paul uses an automotive type of glass cleaner, as it's less likely to rust the steel plate of his diamond stones. But plain water works just as well, so long as you dry the stones after use.
I have a bit of plate glass that I stick 60/80 grit sandpaper to, with carpet tape, if I need some grinding. Necessary when I drop a chisel on the floor or hit a really hard knot with my plane.
Can I ask what grade each of your diamond plates are please Paul, as I want to build a similar system and move on from wet & dry sandpaper? Brand of the diamond plates too if that’s an ok question? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for this. A few questions: Are those diamond stones? What grits? What angle is the bevel? Is there a reason you don't use a secondary bevel? thanks again, Jeff
OH! and I thought when I bought a full set of Magnussen chisels it was because of it being a bad brand. Blunted after an hour of use. DAMN! ty for imparting your decades of knowledge to educate us! Only problem is I only have one sharpening stone that came with the chisel set. How much are those stones? EDIT: Nvm there is 2 sides, coarse and fine so all good : ] Subbed!!!
This is a model for all DIY videos. Right to the point, great info, no frills in less than 3 minutes. A+.
No foolerie, no braces. No devices, no mysticism. Just sense and results. I needed this.
I like this. No nonsense. No over-analysis. Just sharpen it already and get back to work. Other channels can waste hours on this simple task.
Do we create a secondary bevel like we do with hand plane irons?
@@nasarazam you don't need it
