Aerotech K2050 Super Thunder in a 4" Rocket

I launch with SCORE southwest of Pueblo, CO. If the rocket launch trends west to northwest, recovery ends up in rattlesnake country marching up and down the slopes of cliff lined dry washes and cedar trees. Desert hiking is part of the program. I definitely feel your pain, but I also have come to appreciate rocket recovery. Beautiful hikes and a great sense of accomplishment finally finding the damn thing. We don't need tree harnesses here, but an ability to rock climb comes in real handy. Thank the universe for GPS tracking. And yes, some days I only get one launch in because the first one took hours to finally find.

Interesting to see that people are still building and launching rockets. I haven't for over 30 years and back then we didn't have the electronics and tracking you do but the thrill as something you created shoots up into the sky is still intense.
Back then we were having increasing problems getting launch authorization from the FAA, we were certain they were trying to make it as difficult as possible (but then again, we were reaching airliner altitudes of 30K to 34K so a conflict would have been bad so we understood they needed to be cautious too).
Oh cool background! What region of the us were you in? Based on the recent NAR newsletter there’s about 5,000 licensed high power rocketeers out and about :)
On the east coast waivers from the FAA are generally 10-12,000 foot and they’ll give call in to a little higher. Out west 30-50,000 foot is common.
@@pathtouch1 my Dad was a NASA engineer with Engineering & Development and I got the bug from him and they had a great hobby group at NASA Clear Lake (Houston) so we actually usually launched from the back property there. Or we'd go west out FM 2004 to the salt grass prairie between Galveston and Freeport. I built several rockets using M class motors, including one two stage beast. But quite a few were just J n K class.
Note that launching from the NASA property was before the surrounding land exploded with development of streets, Comercial buildings and subdivisions. I remember when NASA headquarters was out in the wilderness with cow pastures all around (end of Mercury, start of Gemini) and the road in front was a two lane asphalt county road. The shrimp boats still docked at the lake (and sold fresh shrimp and oysters cheap off the boats) and there weren't all the high dollar marinas.
So waaaay back in prehistory, haha (before PC computers and far before cell phones).

Nice flight and recovery! Climbing harness definitely comes in handy here in the Northeast. Ive used my climbing treestand on occasion to get high enough where I could get telescopic pole on a rocket and yank it down.
Now that would make a funny video clip.
We have this problem in PA too! He gave me some new ideas!! But I've been looking at a drone to pick them out, lol.

That's the Featherweight GPS. Absolutely the most favorite piece of gear for me at the moment. Without out I would have spent quite a few hours searching for rockets. It even has a mode where if you can't get a lock on your rocket, other ones flown nearby can relay it's position to others if they're also using Featherweights, which a lot of club members do.

I'm not sure what I wanted to get, I may get a Eggfinder mini for some of my smaller ones. I'm definitely going to check out their stuff again. Thank you, nice video BTW. Definitely gave me ideas, I've been low power for a while, it was time to step it up. I've just been reading and watching to see what guys like the most but want to get something soon. I need to look at the FW stuff closer. Thank you, I appreciate it!
I'm in Pa and fly with URRG in NY, if you make it for LDRS next year I'll say hi...lol.

@@pathtouch1 Nice, I talked to Larry the club President at a launch day back in September. I might stay at the one thats like a mile down the road. I'm not sure, I was uo there a few times but always drove, lol. I'm in Pennsylvania so its about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive depending on the traffic and how many times we stop. But, I really don't want to be driving 6 hours a day for that. So I'm gonna figure out something!
But that L3 will be awesome! I have my NAR L1, and going to build my L2 soon. I'm pretty hooked on the LOC 5.5" Magnum 3E for my L2 bird. It's a great spot at URRG and I love that field. So I won't be afraid to go a little higher for a cert flight they don't loose many but it comes down to the GPS. I'm going to do that L2 attempt hopefully in April 2024, but probably May as the weather depends on it. But if it comes to it, I may do it at LDRS. I would really love to do the attempt before, if I'm successful I'll have access for next June to a few more. Then stay there for a while, try the L3 when I know I'm ready. Hey, how are you tracking it? what device are you using to get close?
I’m using the Featherweight gps tracker. It’s a commercially available system designed specifically for tracking rockets with an iPhone and it has paid for itself many times over. Plus it’s just plain cool!
