I've been an Elton fan since I was 13 and saw him on the Muppets. I was a 10 year piano student at the time.. Totally changed my direction as a musician. Shortly thereafter.....gone was Bach, Beethoven and Chopin....and rock and roll was my passion. Today I'm a solo instrumental artist.....a romance pianist if you will. I still play songs like Daniel and Skyline Pigeon. Elton is absolutely amazing.

I’ve seen Elton many times live. The first time this song made this hyper introvert cry. It was a feeling I’ll remember the rest of my life. The end of this song is the separation of music and art. It’s purely artistic.
Great job Ken! Doesn’t hurt the song to have Carl Wilson , Bruce Johnston and Toni Tennille singing background vocals either! Beautiful and timeless song.
Such a unique tone. So identifiable - a timbre that NO ONE other than Elton has. And the musicality of the whole production - music, lyrics, performance, recording. Everything.
It was Elton’s tone that made me fall in love with him in ‘72. I was 9. When he was young he was so cute. But it was THAT VOICE that stunned me. Like everything else in life, his voice was at its best for quite a while. Glad we can still enjoy it. It pains me to see and hear him now though. And by the way, Ken, you’re quite the singer, too. The way you’re able to mimic this song is impressive.
Great songwriting, great chord progression and powerful voice in a simple, not-showy way. He’s playing instrument too, which is great. Thanks sir Ken for showcasing music legends.
Elton never recorded his vocals “live”. They would record piano, bass, drums and guitar live and would always overdub lead vocal at the very end of the recording process. That’s why you never hear any instrument bleeding through on the vocal track. I have almost all of his 70s catalog vocal tracks and there is never instrumental bleed. Another thing you might find interesting is the line “and left me blinded by the light” most people think he’s singing “blind” when he’s actually singing “blinded”. He sings the second syllable very softly which I’ve always thought was so cool. Also you might be interested to know that the amazing background vocals included several of The Beach Boys as they were asked by the producer to do this session.

I'm so jazzed you're reviewing Sir. Elton, one of my fav artists of all time. Exactly, Bernie Taupin amazing song writer, wrote 20 some songs before they met & it's how the magic worked for 50 yrs now. I sat on stage & had a pic at his slick black yamaha grand piano (Nina?) I think she was gorgeous. I got to stand in front of him & sang Daniel. I lost my brother Daniel to cancer & the day of his Yellow Brick Road Tour Concert, I got a call to tell me my Brit friend Daniel passed from cancer & I was devastated. Daniel was an awesome You Tuber & well known for educating people about his rare cancer. So they let me stand in front of Elton & sing Daniel with him as tears streamed down my face. He waved security away & noded it was ok. To leave me where I was & at the end, he was so kind & thanked me a few times with a smile & prayer hands & then I was ushered back to my seat. He could see it meant the world to me & I was so grateful. I contacted his people trying to hopefully get him to dedicate Daniel to my brother & my friend Daniel. That was the best I could do. Later, I was at the front of stage dancing to "I'm Still Standing" & he came over & danced with me with a smile on his face & I thanked him again. It was the most emotional Concert I've ever seen & lasted almost 3 hours non stop wicked. Also, EJs last which made it the most special to me. He was #1 on my live list. I still have a very worn, faded blue copy of the sheet music of this from the 70s that I strummed my guitar to and sang with. It's a wonderful song. Hearing your isolations and comments sure puts more perspective on songs, and I had one of those light bulb moments when you mentioned the Beatles and ELO. My grandparents were married 52 years and one of the things they always said was to never go to bed mad. Wise words. Thanks for all you do and God bless you.
I appreciate good vocal technique, but just like spectacular guitar playing, what matter most is how your instrument serves the song. Elton, as a pianist and a singer, always served the song perfectly. He’s just awesome.
Have been an Elton fan since he started. Thanks so much for doing this. You pointed out things that I never would have though of, and allowed me to learn more about someone I consider very special. I hope you do more of his songs. You pack so much into each of these. So much in 20 minutes or so. It would be interesting to see what you go through putting one of these together!
Elton was my favorite in the 70s. He lost me in the 80s. And got me back in the 90s. This is one of my top faves. I love his voice. His accent tops it off. Bernie was a phenomenal lyricist. I'm loving the isolated vocals vids you've been doing. I think Elton is phenomenal. I love his piano playing as much as his singing. Thanks for the video, congrats on hitting one mill!! 👍👍
Hey Ken! EJ was my first concert back in 1975 Chicago. This is an incredible song. Love the duet he did with George Michael. The first time they did it together is a phenomenal video. Elton is one of the best performers in the world. Tickets available for his 2022 farewell tour!🎹😎
@@kentamplin I guess great minds think alike. Loved your reaction! Seemed like you liked the video as much as I did. Totally agree with you that George was the better singer in this performance. I always thought that this was probably the first time Elton sang it standing up and not playing the piano. Also, Elton probably sang it hundreds of times. Can you knock it out of the park every time? Bottom line, incredible duet! Love it! 😎
Totally agree with your take on Elton's vocal gymnastics being limited but perfect for his compositions. He's no Sabastian Bach but his limitations keep him inline with the song.He doesn't try to oversing or show off.Elton just stays in his lane.

Thank you for another wonderful video. It was a joy to watch, and it was a wow moment when you pointed out how Lennon-esque the arrangement was. I listened to your version and thought it was awesome. The only "problem" with it was that the lyrics have always felt drenched in grief and pain to me, and your nice smile didn't fit with that. :D Thank you, again.
What an absolutely incredible duo! Those lyrics are timeless like time in a bottle and Elton really does know how to make them feel just so... A perfect marriage of his singing and piano playing... I do consider myself fortunate to have grown up listening to stuff like this. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Daniel and so many more from so many other artists... Absolutely would love to hear you break down some ELO, or whatever man! Thanks Ken! 😎👍
Great selection Ken this song played at my sister in laws funeral not a dry eye in the house and all us older folks were singing along. This song emits so much emotion haunting and poignant
Very well professed Ken I have to say over learned more about music in the passed three years than in the whole rest of my life?having the openheartedness to take a song hear it and really appreciate the soul of it and the work that goes into creating it.oh yeah.sir Elton John for me is like the story teller accompanied by his piano.i wish. MTV would have done an unplugged by Elton. I also love Daniel very beautiful. Piano piano piano classical Chopin orbig bad Billy Joel gotta love it thank you .
I love how Elton John takes time between words, singing the verse lines slowly, lengthening the bars on each verse. It sounds like a rock opera when it's slowed down, like when you brought in the instrumentals, when you said that it sounds like the Beatles. The Beach Boys were a big influence to Elton John with how they structured their songs- it reminds me of ELO. I love orchestral rock music! lol you just mentioned ELO were masters of the great 7th chord changes.
I never listened to Elton John that ken I've heard some of his stuff I'm still standing love that song he rocks that song I can't light no more of your darkness cool song it is beautiful Ken Elton John sings it great and beautifully like you said he definitely is a legend he wasn't the greatest singer but he could sing a pretty ballad and nail it in my opinion he was different made a song his own when he sung it ken👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
They just don't make good music anymore or beautiful ballads singers back then we're just great and sing with feeling emotion compassion which singers and music don't have these days Ken
Mr. Tamplin as usual absolutely nailing it with his analysis! Whoever hasn't heard the best version sung by one of the best pop singers ever should listen to the mighty George Michael! This song is beautiful and poetic in a away but I truly believe this song should have been sung by George on his own as he had it all! Nevertheless Elton is a killer songwriter and his piano playing on top of it is outstanding. Cheers
I was barely 14 when I first heard this song, didn't even know who was singing it yet, but knew it would be my favorite song my entire life!❣️. Just loved how you picked it apart, but didn't learn a single thing that I didn't already know about it 😂😂. And what's wild is, I was barely 14 and I knew there would never be a more exquisite song ❤️. Loved it Ken!
I would really love to see you tackle "End of the Line" by The Travelling Wilburys, multiple vocalists so could be challenging as this is a band of only classical rock's elite!! Rock on Ken
When Elton is recording these songs, he is singing and playing live in the studio, with the band. The band has no instruction, and are playing what they think works too, as a sort of jam session. It's how a double-album like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road could be written and recorded in 2 weeks.
I'm in tears🥺🥺. His song hits my heart and gives me goosebumps. Ken, thanks for your nice, beautiful, soulful and sorrowful analysis. You are the man. Much Respect 💯
Never heard these iconic singers through this angle, I mean, just their voices...fantastic! In Elton's case, specific in this song, we don't notice vibrato too much. We tend to expect vibratos on most songs or singers we hear, but it seems not be necessary in certain cases, don't know if I'm right. Great analysis!
Beautiful! Ken, any chance you could do a cover and analysis of EJ's "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road"? I find that one to be a really challenging one to sing, as wonderful as it is.
Love these videos Ken. What's your view on the more commonly played live version with George Michael duetting? I love the way George sings "although I search myself..." Seems to throw such sentiment into it. Always gives me goosebumps. (as did his amazing 80's blue suit)
I've always thought early Elton John is the best. In 1974 when this was recorded, there was still Beatlesesque carryover from the view of songcraft which is wonderful. Then it all went sideways in the 80s. Another great review here, love it as usual. I would really appreciate if you would do one of these isolated vocal reviews on "Stardust Chords" by Greta Van Fleet. Josh Kiszka's vocals are amazing, almost other worldly. Thanks again Ken, you're the best 👑🎶❤
Sitting here eating potato chips watching your channel. Like reading a good book. plus i find you so funny. sometimes lol Please do Meatloaf or Guess Who. My tied favs. ty God bless
Ken: Please mention the incredible backing vocals of Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone and Dee Murray. These early, epic songs pale in comparison when done with later Elton bands with different backup singers. The perfect balance of synchronicity & symbiosis; the soundtrack to many of our lives. Rock on, brother. Love this series!
Oh yeah Nigel, Davey and Dee were awesome vocalist in their own right. What some people may not know is that the backing vocal on this song were done the The Beach Boys…Carl, Bruce, and Billy and Captain and Tennilles Toni Tennille and of course Elton did a lot of his own backing Vs
I was hoping you’d do one on Elton, the greatest vocal technique…probably not but the one thing you missed is that no-one in the 70’s could touch him vocally! Mark Thompson of the former Mark & Brian show said it best “Elton, has one of the greatest rock voices of the 70’s” I will go as far as saying that he had one of the prettiest voices of the 70’s. What I’m saying is that when he sang ballads they were beautiful but the man could also rock…go back and listen to pinball wizard, street kids, empty sky just to name a few. But in all honesty his current vocal timbre is harsh on my ears so the Elton I want to remember is the one that influenced me to be a musician, singer and songwriter! Thanks Ken this was awesome. PS…I’m still waiting on Y&Ts Dave Meniketti isolated vocal.
My favourite Elton John song. Ken keeps doing ,my favourite (non-Hendrix 😁) songs. Have you considered doing a Jimi Hendrix song? Jimi didn't have a great voice but man he could communicate messages and emotions. What was his secret? Did it have do with singing? Or was it related to something else? Thanks Ken
Love Elton & Bernie! Genius songwriting! Did not know you could lose so much support from sitting - glad I play standing up! - my voice needs all the help it can get! 🤣 Great video Ken! - thanks! - enjoyed as always 🎹💛🌈
Hi Ken, I agree with you on everything you said about Elton John and of course "Bernie" Taupin as well. Yes, some "chord-changes" are also very Beatles-style! It is true, it can be said that all modern music has been influenced by the Beatles: the ELO you mentioned are a prime example and also the Tears for Fears, ABBA, Bee Gees and many others in all musical genres ... logically everyone has tried to be original but "certain things" sooner or later come out 😊 I've seen Paul McCartney live twice ... there's no doubt he's awesome ... he's kind of Mozart of modern music to me! It's true that the latest things have no comparison with what he composed in the past but live the "lessons" come very clear! Last time I heard him, he and his band perform a version of "something" dedicated to Harrison that made me cry (not only me) and a version of "helter skelter" that made Metallica envy! Unfortunately I have never seen Elton John live in concert .. let's hope this pandemic ends so maybe I will be able to see him and ... hear him live.
I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on his later voice. In about 1979 he recorded with Thom Bell which really improved his technique, and by 1986/87 when he had the notorious surgery, it had developed into a rather husky baritenor. Personally, I think that his voice in the early to mid 90s was his strongest in terms of support and expression, because after the surgery (which didn't actually change his voice all the much) he was allowed to continue the slide down his range, and find the pocket in his low end. Unfortunately, as happens with everyone, as he's gotten older he's lost a lot of that resonance, but I think he's still got a lot of it If you can't tell, I've put a lot of thought into this man's voice 😂
The definite version of the song for me is the Elton and George Michael live version. Such a deep interepratation of the song, and all we can do is thank these guys for such increadible performances.
Beautiful song! Well crafted. A classic song that’s going be more strong when the song continues. Beautiful lyrics… Amazing! Ken Tamplin rocks! 🤘🤘🤘🎶🎶🎶 Buy the way… A live version with George Michael it’s awesome too!
Although I search myself there's always someone else I see...very deep Definitely one to ponder Ken😊 You are right lyrics have gone stale these days. This is a shame for the lose of depth. Elton John is a mater composer...oh the feels.

Totally agree with your take on Elton's vocal gymnastics being limited but perfect for his compositions. He's no Sabastian Bach but his limitations keep him inline with the song.He doesn't try to oversing or show off.Elton just stays in his lane.
Thanks for the thoughts!
Love Elton John music! I think that one of the best vocal deliveries of Elton John is on the Goodbye Yellow Brickroad song. Amazing video Ken!!!
I agree. Such a great album!
Yes - Never go to sleep angry 😤 ... Resolve Your Soul Before Sleep :) GREAT video, Elton is one of my Hero’s - nice job Ken :)
Rock on!
Haven't watched the video yet, but I wanted to comment how crazy that a vocal surgery turned Elton from a light tenor to a deep baritone!
Hope you enjoy the vid.
Wow ! what a song ! The live version with George Michael on Live Aid (´85) is just THE TOP ONE !! Thanx for bringing this Ken ! Rock on !!!!!
You too, Alecsandro!
This is such a beautiful song- much thanks for bringing Sir Elton to us in your isolated vocal videos 😎👍🏻💪🏼and Ken man, dude, brother, amigo, you deserve TWO million subs for the pure excitement and love you absolutely pour into this channel and your vids…your knowledge is top-notch, but the human factor and personality YOU add is what keeps most of us coming back for more…please please please keep rocking on! 😀🎵🎶🎸🤘🏼
I appreciate that, Patrick!
Thank you for this video! I am a huge Elton fan and I am going to see him at his final concert in dodger stadium next year! To me, he is just so incredibly talented and love him. Love the channel!
Wow! That will be awesome!
So many great points, Ken! Your joy continues to be contagious. I was having a tough time winding down tonight and your happy and joyous approach is medicine for the soul. Excited for 1 mil subs coming your way soon!
It is exciting! Thanks for listening, Andy!
I love this iconic song! Your version is superb! 👏👏👏
Thanks so much, Cindy!
I really enjoy watching your videos. There's so much wisdom and experience on them, and even make my day if im having hard times, seriously Ken. I have some friends with which usually gather and talk a lot about music. Man, my friends would adore you! Hehe keep it on buddy, blessings!
Thanks so much, Andres!
Always liked his stylings and diversity.
So do I!
You are welcome!
Elton's voice is so emotive and smooth similar to Steve Perry very soulful
Indeed! Rock on!
Thanks Ken! 😎👍
Thanks for the thoughts! Rock on!
Great selection Ken this song played at my sister in laws funeral not a dry eye in the house and all us older folks were singing along. This song emits so much emotion haunting and poignant
Indeed. I am so sorry for your loss.
Ken, Elton John is a tough artist to do worthy so my hat is off to you for taking it on!! KUDOS MY MAN🖒🖒
Thank you J J!
@@kentamplin Most Welcome 😎🖒🖒
When sounds "Can You Feel the Love Tonight", is it enough to make a grown man cry.....👀
That's a beautiful song. Rock on, Simba.
Loved him! 🤩
You sing very well Ken 👋🏻👃😍
I appreciate that! Rock on!
Outstanding!
Glad you like it!
Great stuff! I remember Elton saying that Leon Russell was his biggest influence as a singer.
I believe it. Leon was aa tremendous talent.
Such a touching song
It's beautiful. Rock on, Kenny!
Thanks for sharing, Wes!
Love your enthusiasm!
Thanks!
Elton was my first concert! I was 12… seat ticket price $12.50!!! Las Vegas…. Good Times for sure
🕶🔥 Awesome as always thanks Ken..
My pleasure!
Meant to say I didn't listened to him that much
They just don't make good music anymore or beautiful ballads singers back then we're just great and sing with feeling emotion compassion which singers and music don't have these days Ken
He's got a tremendous body of work and is just fantastic. Do yourself a favor!
Yes Ken I'll definitely listened to him some more and check some more of his stuff out listend to some more of his music
Hey Ken could you do a vocal analysis on Frankie valli and the 4 seasons oh what a night love that
great great great!!!
Thanks for listening!
Cheers
Thanks for weighing in, Don!
Great choice, thanks Ken 🤔👍.
My pleasure!
Glad you enjoyed it, Sheri!
I would really love to see you tackle "End of the Line" by The Travelling Wilburys, multiple vocalists so could be challenging as this is a band of only classical rock's elite!! Rock on Ken
Thanks for the suggestion, J J!
@@kentamplin Anytime!!
It is very melancholy. Thanks for listening!
@@kentamplin My pleasure.
Back to the classics!
Indeed! Rock on!
Good analysis Ken 🤟
Thanks for listening, Arnaldo!
Another top video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much, Monica!
Beautiful! Ken, any chance you could do a cover and analysis of EJ's "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road"? I find that one to be a really challenging one to sing, as wonderful as it is.
A very special song and times in UK pop history.
Thanks for the visit! Keep on rockin'!
Love these videos Ken. What's your view on the more commonly played live version with George Michael duetting? I love the way George sings "although I search myself..." Seems to throw such sentiment into it. Always gives me goosebumps. (as did his amazing 80's blue suit)

@@kentamplin Amazing - I knew you'd have it covered...
Thanks for the suggestion, Sonia!
Elton is one of the best all times
He surely is!
Love the Bible reference my brother! Great analysis Ken, As usual :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Sitting here eating potato chips watching your channel. Like reading a good book. plus i find you so funny. sometimes lol Please do Meatloaf or Guess Who. My tied favs. ty God bless
Rock on, Barb!
You just did. Thank you!
Hello, Ken!!! Элтон Джон мировая легенда, обожаю его!!! 🎼👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Hello, Bakyt!
Ken, im having trouble thinking of the music we grew up with as oldies!! Oldies are 1950s lol. Im having a crisis here .😱😳😊
I know the feeling, Mary!
Thanks for weighing in, Ruben!
Thanks Ken
Thanks for the suggestion.
Love Elton & Bernie! Genius songwriting! Did not know you could lose so much support from sitting - glad I play standing up! - my voice needs all the help it can get! 🤣 Great video Ken! - thanks! - enjoyed as always 🎹💛🌈
Thanks so much!!
Hi Ken, I agree with you on everything you said about Elton John and of course "Bernie" Taupin as well. Yes, some "chord-changes" are also very Beatles-style! It is true, it can be said that all modern music has been influenced by the Beatles: the ELO you mentioned are a prime example and also the Tears for Fears, ABBA, Bee Gees and many others in all musical genres ... logically everyone has tried to be original but "certain things" sooner or later come out 😊
I've seen Paul McCartney live twice ... there's no doubt he's awesome ... he's kind of Mozart of modern music to me!
I hope you get to see EJ, too! Rock on, Dave!
@@kentamplin - Thank you very much! Rock on Ken to you too!
Unfortunately, as happens with everyone, as he's gotten older he's lost a lot of that resonance, but I think he's still got a lot of it
If you can't tell, I've put a lot of thought into this man's voice 😂
Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnstone from The Beach Boys on backing vocals for the chorus!
Rock on Azred!
Steady on, Ken :) Nikita’s a great lyric too!
Indeed! 😊
Nice analysis! Could you also do an Isolation Vocal Analysis on What A Fool Believes by The Doobie Brothers (Michael McDonald)?
Perhaps! Rock on!
THIS!
The definite version of the song for me is the Elton and George Michael live version. Such a deep interepratation of the song, and all we can do is thank these guys for such increadible performances.
It's a beautiful rendition. Rock on!
Beautiful song! Well crafted. A classic song that’s going be more strong when the song continues. Beautiful lyrics… Amazing!
Ken Tamplin rocks! 🤘🤘🤘🎶🎶🎶
Buy the way… A live version with George Michael it’s awesome too!
Thanks, Flavio!
Although I search myself there's always someone else I see...very deep
Definitely one to ponder Ken😊
You are right lyrics have gone stale these days. This is a shame for the lose of depth. Elton John is a mater composer...oh the feels.
Indeed! Thanks Tracy!
