  • Vocal Coach Reaction To George Michael - Elton John - Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Ken Tamplin
    Believing what you're singing.
Today's reaction is a performance of George Michael and Elton John performing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me".
The song was written by Elton John and the GREAT Bernie Taupin during a ten-day period in January 1974.
The song was apparently difficult and frustrating to record and Elton wasn't happy with any of his vocal takes. Producer Gus Dudgeon had a difficult time trying to mix all the voices and instruments that went into it. Dudgeon later said: "When Elton recorded this track, he was in a filthy mood.
I choose to react to the version featuring George Michael from a live performance in 1991.
I'm not gonna lie, George Michael's interpretation leaves me seriously moved and to me, he provides the ideal example of what it looks like to BELIEVE in what your singing.
When he starts the song I literally feel like he's in a living room singing directly to me.
Elton is a LEGEND and always delivers an incredible performance BUT if I'm being honest, I actually prefer George Michael's version of the song. For me it's much more Personal and Pure.
Anyway, listen for yourself and let me know whose version you liked more!!

Ken, I saw George on this tour at MSG. Oddly he did a ton of covers like Now That We Found Love and on and on lol. It was fantastic. He did this song but in the verses stayed within himself. Yes, he did the aerobics but the tone of the song was more heavy hearted, and that’s appealing to me. What I find funny is I grew up a full on metal head but loved people like George, And many more. It’s funny that you hit on them as our earlier influences I.e. Foreigner, Purple, anything Dio are the same. I think it’s cool that you show you’re cultured musically. I won’t be pigeonholed in to one thing and I’m glad you are the same.

Scott, I believe this was his Cover to Cover tour ( wish I had been there) he launched so his fans could have something to look forward to. He refused to allow Sony to make more money off his new music and there fore he decided to perform a concert of covers. Personally I think he was the Master of covers. he took all the songs to another level. His voice and his delivery was like no others. I love him so much!

@@mcflotty That is a wonderful song. But one is what amazed me and maybe influenced into George's vocals/style/music/ the most with absolute originality and sound of the voice was "Hand to Mouth". There is so much extensive overbreath ...I think it could be a record holder in this category. In fact, I lived in USSR at thet time, we knew not much about western music, and this was something head-turning. I should confess that at start I thought it was low female vocal, as with whispering it is quite hard to tell what is going on - I did not know about George Michael..he wasn't in disco hits and not in radio, so that was discovered. And that's how I started to sing. And I should confess again - I wanted to sound like him because I felt I have similar texture in voice, but I lack language, feel, knowledge... so George taught me that all through endless singing his songs from both albums, wham repertoire... new songs.
Hand to Mouth is something not from here... I don't know how people like George come up with such music and sound. It's a mystery for me.

When you put together the whole package, the delivery, the texture, the intonation, the perfect pitch, and the ability to reach those he's singing to, no one...NO ONE...comes near this man, regardless of how much they think they might. This is a whole different level of vocal prowess and it will forever remain untouched. Music lost an original, a once-in-a-lifetime talent, an icon. There will NEVER be another George Michael.

Whenever George sang a duet he never tried to take the spotlight off the other singer. Sometimes George’s natural talented just outshined the other performer. George was such a perfectionist and he was always pitch perfect no matter who he sang with I would imagine they put a little more effort into their performance to match George’s natural ability. George was the ultimate performer and song writer. What a talent he was.

Great video, here's my input: As the biggest Elton John fan in Michigan and only a casual George Michael fan, you'd assume that I'd think that Elton was all golden here and George sucked. No, actually I agree that George performs this particular version so much better than Elton. But I don't believe it's because George is a better singer at all. This live version is from 1991, when Elton was about 44. George was 28... big age gap and your voice does alter as you age. This is the case for Elton's range, for by the time he hit 40, his range was dropping and narrowing a little. Lets not forget he had throat surgery to remove nodules in 1987 and stopped singing for awhile. If you swap out 44 year old Elton for 27 year old Elton (the age he wrote the song), now you can fairly compare the two because Elton's pitch then was SO incredibly wide and diverse. Starting in the 80s, Elton actually began permanently rephrasing his songs live because higher notes were becoming difficult for him. These days, (and I've seen him live 5 times in 3 years) Elton doesn't even sing the "Oh no no no" part of the chorus in "Rocket Man". He actually remains silent for it because in the past, his attempts to reach those notes were kinda pitiful. But yeah, Elton's range in 1991 was not that impressive compared to George's, but as an Elton diehard, I was personally impressed with his power and those high notes he was hitting (those were probably the top of his range then). Besides range, I'll argue that Elton has an incredible ability, even nowadays, to change the tone of his voice, sing softer and add intense dynamics. George of course is equal in this department here. I feel that Elton's Aries competitive nature makes it seem like Elton wanted this performance to be about him, and that's completely possible. You got to remember he JUST entered rehab in 1990 and in '91 he was sober and new to the world. Maybe he didn't want the world to forget who he was, what he established, and not let someone else steal the show that subconsciously represented his life. If you look at it that way, it's truly beautiful how Elton sang so vigorously and passionately against George's softer, gradual notes. Elton's showing that he still cares about his song, his life and he is still sweet enough to have George a part of it. So I see a TON of soul in Elton's voice, coming from someone who knows his life VERY well. I would give them equal votes on this, but in this particular version I still think George had it together more, especially range-wise. He used it cleverly because he could... Elton was limited vocally and only had half the song left to give it his all. I feel like George already got his spotlight in the beginning and throughout, so I'm just proud of Elton for shining through like he did. Yes, a little vocal battle might've been going on, but I think it worked out. In general though, Elton or George as a better singer? Neither... don't think anyone in this world is better at a talent than another. You just "feel" it with some or you don't. I feel it all over with these guys in any song of any decade.

    • @buggym5269
      @buggym5269 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I couldn't disagree more. Elton John, himself will tell you he doesn't particularly have a "GREAT" voice. And fortunately there's much more to being a GREAT musician and artist than the voice. I will say that Elton John in his younger days, had a head voice that seemed limitless. It's his lower register that limited his ability. Elton has more of a lyrical voice. George Michael also had a great head voice in his younger days, and his used it quite a bit (check out his rendition of Love Machine). However, right around the album Edge Of Heaven, George Michael started developing his much more powerful and dramatic lower register. And this is where George Michael leaves many singers sounding extremely pale. George's seems to have an unlimited range, tone, and texture, comparable to the finest instruments. To truly hear the quality of his voice you need really good headphones or speakers, that can produce the high airy spectrum as well as screech less mid range, and full bass to get the full appreciation of George's Michael's voice, his tone is extremely rich, full, and airy from the very top of his voice to even the lowest of lows. He's truly unique in that way. And I believe it's why his voice is so appreciated.

I'm sorry I couldn't read your entire comment as I'm suffering too much spinal pain today. I'm also an admirer of both George and Elton along with many others. I do have to say that George is technically the better singer and not just put up against Elton. I've never encountered a more pure and technically spot on voice than George's. Not everyone's voice changes with age which has surprised me. I would have assumed such but have seen many vocalists who are still going great despite aging. It's different for everyone. I don't want to upset you but it will be a very sad day when we finally lose dear Elton. He has given us so much. When I'm feeling better I'll read your comment properly without rushing through which would be disrespectful. I still have some vinyl albums of Eltons which I won't part with anytime soon, just like the many other artists I admire.

I never paid much attention to George Michael until he performed Somebody to Love at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in 1992 & he blew me away. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone sing that song as well as he did & he nailed it in rehearsal too. Another loss to the world of music when he passed.
And I agree, I’d rather George sang it solo.

I always felt like Elton kinda “phoned this one in” even though an Elton phone-in is still pretty darn good. I always thought that George being a consummate professional and perfectionist was really pulling out all the stops to do his very best to pay respect to the song and Elton and the audience. George knew it could be an iconic performance and he put in the work.

He did his best Elton John and George did George Michael. The beauty of it is they blended so well and made an iconic rendition of this song together.

I love Elton John... but the love affair I've had with George Michael started in 1983 with Wham's first appearance on American Bandstand. One of the greatest singer/songwriters in my lifetime. I never heard that man hit a wrong note, no matter how many times I watched something live. Did you know that George wrote music in his head? He only put lyrics on paper to work them out. The day he died, in my head, I saw all those beautiful notes we never heard floating up to heaven. I still mourn that loss. 😢 I would love to hear your analysis on George's performance of Somebody To Love for the Freddie Mercury tribute at Wembley. ❤

He was purposely. And blatantly, under appreciated.
He went up against the industry. Even though he lost, walking outside, down the stairs of the court house, he stopped at the podium and blasted them again and the judge.
So that is when they realized they weren’t shutting him up. So of course now, Sony is going to “ RELEASE” him from his slave contract, because having a trouble maker bug mouth mega star that made them $150 Million off his first few years with them, he’s just not worth keeping around. Right.
He is the same guy with something important to say as to why you landed in court in the first place… he put you there.
But now all the sudden SONY is going to let him out of his contract because they can’t have the embarrassment!
Then why didn’t you let him out of his contract when he asked
      You said no !
He said fine taking you to court.
Because they needed to show him who was the boss, but it didn’t work!
After that , that was pretty much it for any kind of umm, let’s say turning back for compromise because they also , executives of Sony America. Apparently made homophobic slurs to him.
So GM didn’t give a shxt either way he wasn’t going to be their career slave especially now!
So they let him out if his contract of course for a price. Which they were also banking on that he wouldn’t have it, but he did. Because it’s never been about the money with GM.
If he would have followed suit of most that sign they overspend, and then they are even more saturated of being being owned by the industry.
      Not him!
But they still since they are the media, also hindered his career.
Starting with the California set up!

So mistaken. Elton si not usually a performer, he is more like the singer with his piano, he was here out of his element, like with the movements and everything, you just can see like he is pushing. And the way he is pushing is because this is a different version, a version that required more energy in the voice. And George have a better range in his voice, that's not a secret, so Elton can't go there and sing like if he is with his piano.
The arrangements were outstanding in this version and those are artist, artist mean to entertain the public to make it spectacular, and Elton helped a lot with that. The energy was also required to the back and forth part... So yeah I can't see what you said about Elton acting like a diva. Both did great. And yes Michael's voice is amazing but he is not better singer for that, Elton arrangements in his voice and songs are usually spectacular, the prove is that he never needed Michael's voice to be a legend.

To me there is no discussion about who has a better voice or talent singing. To me George Michael's voice is a never-ending channel of emotions. I had his album "Symphonica" of 2014 and his version of "One more try" blew my mind when I listened to it in a dark room with my headphones on. Also, we have to understand the differences between the two artists. I love both, but EJ is more of a showman, an artist capable of singing outstandingly, specially before he had the surgery in the late 80's, playing the piano with crazy skills and writing some of the most beautiful songs I've ever listened to. George Michael was a great singer, but he lacked many of the features of Elton, therefore a comparison seems unfair, because they are completely different.

You said exactly what I've felt since I was a kid. I heard george start the song, Eltons song, then Elton came in and it was a completely different feel. Far less feeling in my opinion. Which is completely fine I mean Elton can do whatever the hell he wants to do and it still sounds great, it still is great, he is great, but George brought heart to the song because it means maybe a little bit more to him than it does Elton at this point. that was maybe written at a point in elton's life that he doesn't relate to so much at the moment he's singing it in this video. George Michael seems to have not only the feeling behind it but an extreme appreciation for the song and a connection to the lyrics and it's evident in his singing.

You saw this differently than I did. I didn’t see a competition. I saw Elton being Elton....he’s always been theatrical....he’s a diva, he’s admitted that. George, I was just enjoying his soul. I love it when he goes off. I see a lot of respect there between the two of them.

it looks like you failed to mention that George took the harmony twice on the last line of the chorus he let Elton shine with the lead vocal and he overlaid the most perfectly balanced Harmony I think I've ever heard

This was a VERY personal performance by George Michael.. at the time his partner was in the late stages of HIV and AIDS and died around a year later. Elton was in and out of deep depression and drug rehab at the time. Lets not forget Elton is post-op on throat surgery here and the voice never really returned to what it once was. George was always flawless in the studio and live... RIP ... we lost one of the all time greats.

Ken, I absolutely agree with you. I defenitely prefer George Michael although it's Elton's song. The way George sings this is so touching that you can;t be not moved. What a killer voice! George Michael was a phenomenal artist with an angel voice! Thank you for your honesty and sincerity,. I appreciate that. You are the best vocal coach with a great deal of passion and knowledge. Thank you for that.

It is very overrated to praise rock singers who mistreat and tear their voices, and after ten years their voices are already hoarse and full of vices.

When this came out I instantly knew that GM was one of the greatest singer/performers of all time. He had Elton on the ropes from the first note.
I like Elton’s songs better (really BT’s songs with EJ music/arrangement) but GM was on a vocal plane far above Elton at that time.
Would like to have seen how this would’ve went with the 70’s EJ onstage with GM.

Ken, IMO you want to hear George in how great he really was as an artist, and vocalist. He pulls it all out in his cover of Stevie Wonder's "They Won't Go When I Go". His register, enunciation, pitch, power, & pure heart of the message he singing. Although he never disappointed on any song he gave us (A-sides). This hidden B-side song is a true gem for any vocalist, and music fan to admire. Will not let down. Check it! +++Peace, & Rock n' Roll Bro!+++

Ken, I mostly agree with your reaction except where you criticize GM for the vocal "theatrics". He's singing a duet, he has to complement/match what EJ is doing. He can't just ignore EJ and does his own thing as if he's the only one on stage. He is clearly the superior singer between the two.
I read a critique of this song where the critic said GM's part shows nuances, the deep range of emotions while EJ sounds like he's beating a carpet. No subtlety in emotion. No nuances. I got such a laugh out of that critique.
Please do more GM. Really enjoyed this reaction.

    • @krisushi1
      @krisushi1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I also disagree with the "theatrics" remark. George always put himself entirely into a performance which included the movements he made when feeling the song. Just look at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert and he does the same there. It's the way he performs naturally and wasn't put on just for this video.
