If you think it's magical in the winter, you definitely need to come in the summer(June-July). Rent a cabin by a lake or sea, it's the most beautiful sight in the world. Sitting on the terrace after a sauna cooling of looking over the lake with the midnight sun just hovering at the horizon, a couple of swans landing getting ready to sleep. The distant sound of a cuckoo.
@@RaisingVoyagers It's even funny for us Finns how atmosphere changes when it get's warmer and bright especially at summer. People are so much more outgoing and happier at summer than at winter. ("happier" does not make you sad at winter. More like we change batteries, so we can run wild at summer.)
Nice to see that even though you didnt have experience on ice baths you did it just like u should, just go in the water and take deep breaths to relax and not panic, ten points! Im an expert in ice bathing but you even beat many of my finnish friends at this :D And true words, its through discomfort where you only find happiness
Finland will welcome your family back with open arms! please consider visiting during the summertime to see our cabin culture. You can sauna and swim in a lake or the ocean, the archipelago is simply magical. The midnight sun coupled with our lushious forests is especially wonderful to the soul.
I am so touched by your videos! It's Christmas and I'm watching you in Canada, where I live. I am Finnish, I love ice dips and sauna - of course. My heart melts seeing the landscape and the "blue hour" (low light, when everything turns blue and purple). My forefathers are from Estonia, which is another amazing country with resilient, wise people. I think you nailed it in the cold bath: It is not comfort that makes us happy. Accessing "the soul quality of our essence" ie. love, compassion, connection, generosity, belonging, grace... that's what makes us happy! I think you people bring the magic with you wherever you go! Thank you for choosing Finland! Much Love for your every step!
Absolutely magical place! ❤🙌 I live winter ❄️ and Nordic countries are just spectacular places to visit. Definitely beautiful video with your daughters and making great memories as a family that will last a lifetime! 🙏🙏💖
It's not every day you get to see your childhood "backyard" on TH-cam. I have very fond memories of Christmases in Apukka, especially our old house (Villa Apukka) and the log-sauna made that time of the year always feel so special. It was a great time being a kid and grow up in that environment...
Safety is one of the things why Finland feels so special. Just don't talk to intoxicated people and you'll be just fine in Finland. The Turku archipelago is one of the most impressive places that I have visited. Go there in July or August and you'll love it and that is a promise from a Finn.
So glad you've enjoyed your visit here. You might want to consider visiting Finland during summer time as well. No snow, it is kinda warm (sometimes even hot). But different experience. 😊
Summers are amazing in the north, granted the weather can be hit or miss but it has its own magic just like the winters up there, its just something about it that is hard to express in words.
My brother in law is Russian and he built a sauna on his plantoon boat and we would go up to the lakes in California during winter and sauna then jump in the freezing lake it’s the best!!
Your thoughts at the end make me want to go to Finland badly! My son is only 1 and he has been to 4 countries. I can’t wait to show him more of the world!!
Beautiful video!! As a finn, I recommend visiting in Kotka on summer. June-july. Full of beautiful parks/The ocean/history... So pretty! Have a nice trip anywhere you go!
The Midsummer eve/day, or summer in general in the Finnish countryside is the best. 24/7 sunlight, bonfires, festivals, traditions and sauna ofc.. Just bought a 200yr old farmhouse from the village I grew up in, can't wait to try out the log sauna and live the rest of my life at that place :)
With the current state of global warming, I don't know about March in Finland. The seasons have recently been really mixed, there really isn't Spring or Autumn. However if you truly want to experience Finland in the summertime, please come in Midsummer! That's around 25th of June. Lapland is magical with the sun not properly setting and hopefully it's warm too! As a Fin, it was cool to see your adventure here. Please come again and vlog about your stay!! ^_^
finlandI love that you guys had such a wonderful time in Finland, annnnnnd.... The whole from sauna to cold to sauna thing? Yeah, you know THE awesome feeling I'm referring to. ;)
im really happy you guys liked your stay here! I really recommend visiting western/southern Finland or the archipelago in the summertime aswell, many beautiful islands and seaside towns here :) (and also alot of lakeside/seaside saunas!)
Why Finland is the happiest place in the world?? Ofcourse the answer is about many things but like you said you sensed it! It's must be the pure, clean and mostly untouched nature all around us! It's actually almost difficult to find stressful situation from Finland... And we really know how to find the peace of mind -or most of us do!
Yes, on my maternal side I have Finnish relatives from Lapland that settled in Northern Michigan. This series has made me very interested in visiting Finland.
Ice swimming is one of the best ways to learn how your mind controls your body. It is eye opening to realize how much we can control things that first seem to be uncontrollable.
@@RaisingVoyagers Yeah if you pass the icy bath test you'll get the pasport :) About the happiness index: I believe the good life balance make Finns content, people value their free time, often in the nature. And there's something left of the old fashioned mutual trust, generally people still trust each other and the authorities, police, government. Like living in a small village, kind of :)
No, they use swimsuits and that's a big NONO. Might go in Sweden or on Åland but not here! :D You need to be free to really feel free, but I do understand that you use em in the videos. Edit: You can't put words to it but cleansing of the soul was a good line one American used.
Nice, very nice, but to be honest, I a Finn has never done or felt any great desire to have a bath in ice cold water. Rolling in the snow, as a kid, in between running in and out of the sauna was part of the fun however.
Kiitos vierailustanne Suomessa, palatkaa tosiaan maaliskuussa takaisin, tulkaa rukalle laskettelemaan, lapset tykkää varmasti illalla rinteeseen pääsee ratti kelkoilla ja hissi vie ylös.. 12.3-> olen itse lomalla, silloin ei ole tungosta eikä ylimäärästä jonotusta ja huomattavasti halvempaa kaikki.. Basic thing's (is why we are happy) is that you will have help. You will have peace if you want it. We are in this Tellus together. PS. Yes there are all same problems that other places have :D So i think it's those basic stuff :)
Ok for the camera it is a good idea to wear swimsuit but you should try it in your natural state... The next level. Common in Finland and something we have done in our family as far back as I can remember.
March-April is great in Lapland. As a Finn I like most June-July in Lakeland Eastern Finland. P..S. You need to take a ship to Tallin to be real Finns... 😆
I would advice against trying to stay as long as possible in the water. Hypothermia sets in really quickly in freezing water. A quick dip is enough. Other than that, it was a lovely video! Glad you liked it here.
You can stay easily 1-3 min in a 3-5 degrees water. Your body fights the cold. Hypothermia will be a problem after 10 mins and more, and also if you do not change warm clothes or go to sauna/warm place immediately. The whole finnish army is training these skills and they dont have a sauna, only clothes and self made fire.
Hmm, I'm glad you finished of a huge checklist to become a Finnish citizen but you forgot one thing I love to do myself. Sitting next to a campfire barbecuing Finnish sausage and drink a lot of beer. That's a must do thing after going to the sauna and it's meant to be relaxing time afterwards. I'm glad you got to experience the other stuff anyways =).
I’m pretty sure you don’t have to sit in the ice cold water dude. Honestly it’s supposed to be a cold dip as I understand it just to rinse off the sweat and close your pores to keep the heat in.
Not really a routine for most people. I bet 80% of the people in the Nordics haven't swam in an icy lake. Yea, some people do it, and people know, other people do it and don't really care one way or the other and don't really make a big deal out of it.
It's probably more than +90%., but some people seriously claim it's good for them, who knows. On the other hand two guys I knew lost their life just falling in the water sail racing and not being rescued in time in cold water. I also remember when 10 young kids runing aground in the autumn in the archipelago, all dead silently floating in their life vests, not through drowning but just because of the cold water, not that many minutes is enough.
You are more than welcome to come visit Finland anytime, but please... Do not call yourself Finnish even if joking. There a litteral Hell to go across before you get there. You basically have to born here to understand it. But I'm happy that the travel agency did it all very easy for you and you had a blast, that's the point when you pay money for service in Finland.

I heard it helps a lot to use neoprene socks or shoes if you go to swim in ice water.
Ice and snow can cut your skin real easily when your feet are cold Neoprene is too high tech. I prefer felt slippers made by my grandma 🙂
