How to Port Your Section 8 to Another State - HUD Moves & Portability OR How to Transfer a Section 8 Voucher to Another State

If you're preparing to move to another state, you may wonder if your Section 8 voucher will go with you. With a voucher in hand, you'll be more likely to get affordable, safe housing in your new location. But although these vouchers are marked transferrable, you will need to take a few extra steps to use them in your new home state.
What Are Vouchers?
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development makes safe and sanitary housing affordable for low-income, disabled and elderly citizens under its Housing Choice Voucher program. Renters receive a voucher that they can transfer to any jurisdiction, whether in their state or across the nation. Public housing agencies, or PHAs, administer the program locally.
Your Local Housing Authority
Before you move, you must contact the PHA that issued the section 8 voucher for your current rental arrangement. The PHA will check your records to verify that your voucher is portable. You cannot transfer your voucher if you owe money to the PHA or if you have violated the agency's regulations.
Verifying the New Location
Once your local PHA verifies your portability, it will check for a PHA branch in the area to which you plan to move in the new state. You cannot transfer your voucher to an area where there is no PHA with a rental assistance program. If there is an agency in that jurisdiction, your local PHA will ensure that the qualifying requirements for the location are similar to the requirements for your current residence.
Transferring Your Voucher
Your local housing agency will provide you with the contact information for the branch in the new jurisdiction and tell you how to register for assistance at that location. Because you already have a voucher, it is not necessary for the new office to have you qualify for rental assistance again. Your local PHA will send the new agency your most recent HUD 50058 form (Family Report).
Rental Assistance With a Different PHA Branch
Each Public Housing Agency has different family size and income limits. Depending on the new PHA's policies, it may have to re-examine your information to determine the type of family unit for which you qualify and the amount of money you can receive. The agency may admit you into its housing program and cover your renting expenses if it has enough funds. If not, it will bill your expenses to the former agency, and you will continue to receive housing benefits from that PHA branch.
MANAGING YOUR MONEY
HUD's Section 8 housing choice voucher program is a critical program for individuals and families in need of safe and affordable places to live. But if your living situation becomes unsafe or you need to relocate to another state or county, you may need to transfer. Portability is written into the Section 8 voucher program, giving you permission to transfer location anywhere in the United States where the program operates. Like dealing with any government office, it may take time to process everything, so be sure to apply well in advance of your anticipated move.
Contact the public housing agency that serves your current city and state and inform staff of your wish to move to a different apartment. You can find your local agency's contact information at hud.gov. If you are moving to a different city and state, your agency will need to make contact with the housing agency at your desired location and make arrangements for the transfer. If this is your first lease and you are requesting a transfer, your agency will have to check your income against eligibility requirements in the new location and inform you as to whether your Section 8 voucher can be used there.
Give your landlord proper notice of your intention to leave according to the lease or contract. HUD will not permit you to transfer to a new apartment without fulfilling the conditions of your original lease unless you have special dispensation from your landlord.
Make an appointment with the public housing agency or group that handles Section 8 housing at your new location once you arrive. The agency in your original city will have notified your new location and given you contact information. The housing agency at your new location will issue you a housing choice voucher and guide you as you look for a new dwelling

Im having a hard time finding a packet like this on the web for the housing agency im moving to. Im trying to do my own research before porting out
I’m porting to Florida from Kansas and they are taking forever I’m worried I’ll be homeless while I wait for Florida to process my port in paper work I have a four year old I really don’t wanna stay in a shelter I don’t have anyone who will let me stay with them I started the process four months ago psa: I have a biomedical engineering degree I’m trying to move for better opportunities so that I can get off assistance 😢😢😢

Hey, so if a Housing Authority says they don’t absorb vouchers. Does that also mean that you have to abide by the payment standards that the housing Authority your porting From goes by?

Hey there , so I’m currently in Louisiana, I have a HUD voucher but my apartment manager has never given me an information, I’m currently trying to get to Texas , is that possible ?
You will need to find out if you have unit based voucher or housing choice voucher. Unit base vouchers have to be converted to HCV before they can be ported to another state.
What is the process for a housing choice voucher?
Can you please do a video on porting prior to the 12 month rule as a reasonable accommodation for non-residents?
I have successfully been able to do this for myself personally however, when helping friends and family, I am being met with much resistance. If they even get the slightest hint that I am not going to rent in their jurisdiction, they are halting issuing the voucher so now I’m spending a lot of my time convincing said Housing Authority, that I will rent in that jurisdiction, even if I have no intention to. I would love to book an appointment with you to discuss this if possible.

Trying to port to another state with my HUD-VASH.. and My VA Counselor wants me to go into temporary housing ( a shelter ) and it cant be a good thing.. this is scary. does it have to be this way..?!

Can it be done from New York City to Puerto Rico
I've been living in hud for over a decade and am trying to move to a different hud apt in maybe a different area or or city. How can I go about this and how long do you think it will take? My new hud leasing agent said this hud housing is it they don't help with anything else,, and that I would have to go to pha. What rights do I have and how do I go about it?

Yes thank you for your responses, I am now moved to the city I wanted to port to. I initially had to tell my case worker to send my info to a different city bc the city I wanted to move to had no apartment or homes available and waiting lists were over extensive. My second option I have better luck with bc I am now in my new place and am so grateful it worked out, but needles to say, it was definitely lots time consuming tasks and playing the waiting game to go through and surely we’ll worth it :))

It can be done but it also depends your case.
So I just got a promotion in the city I am now and don't want to tranfer to the other city I got approved for what can I do to stay where I am

I moved backed from Las Vegas to Los Angeles and haven't been issued my voucher yet and it has been 30 days they've had the paperwork and keep saying they have 45 days to just issue my voucher. Myself and my special needs son are now homeless what can I do?
