As I stated in a previous video that is a bicron stand , the post hold panels which scans the cars for radiation, there is a speed limit when the cars pass thru. There for when it's to fast the alarm will sound or the scrap is hot! Most mills require the shippers to have them!!!
Well, you said it before I could. That’s what it is a radiation detector. They have it for trucks too. Now the big question is will the load get refused at its final destination??
Jason, This is a very nice video. I have been a RailFan for some 45 years now. I live in East Hartford, CT. I must Drive 25 to 35 miles to watch CSX & Ct. Southern
Alter metals in Rockford IL has radiation detectors on their scales and on their rail line. I haul for a rolloff company more than once when hauling a dumpster out of there electrical insulators for high-voltage powerlines have tripped the sensors and they have to go through the dumpster to find the source to verify it is not dangerous. Also, if you drive through them too fast that will set off a warning. I’m guessing they were pulling the cars too fast.
That iron mountain line reminds of of the spur that used to run from the east side of the old PG plant (webster & university) through the front yards of clay st to the double tracks between eastman ave in green bay.
502 may be in for its routine inspection that all locomotives are required to have. If it's sitting in Oconto Falls, it probably would have been spotted by one of the ELS fans by now.
I live in North Mississippi at New Albany, BNSF Rail runs thru here, there is also a private line that runs 15 miles north to the Oil Dry Company and when it moves north or south, it has to do it quite slow, all of the track up thru there looks like the locomotive could fall of at any time
It's definitely rough industrial track, but it isn't as bad as it seems through the perspective of a camera lens. I know they have frequent derailments on this line, but not in this area and not necessarily because of how the rails look.
For tracks that are used daily they look terrible! I only hope that I can recreate that look on my new model train layout. And I love the downtown shots.
That was a neat shot of 503 with the sun overhead by your house. So I wonder if the 5 car buffer is for 503 or all engines? Only cars are going over that switch? As always, thanks for sharing. 👍
@@mshum538 Now that you mention it, that is all they are running. They did have a GP-38 a while back, maybe numbered 402, but it has been so long I don't remember.
@@t.j.carroll8512 I believe it was numbered 402 and not having seen it in Jasons video tells me it has major mechanical issues and not able to meet FRA inspection criteria …you cant really learn alot about E&LS operations and their “ locomotive service facilities “ watching alter metal getting a switch every day ….good day …
I think it's a good idea to use those buffer cars while spotting cars at Alter, instead of backing a locomotive across that switch. Looks and sounds like 503 might be out of traction sand also.
Radiation detectors. Go through too fast and they will trigger. I do train traffic for a large shredder yard. You will find the same detectors at the truck scales.
they have radiation detector at the scale at their racine location. there have been cases in several countries where people stole abandoned medical equipment, scrapped it and the broke open lead containers released cobalt60 pellets into the yard scrap and caused a catastrophe. people died
Is the detector to alert the employees of a train ? For safety ? Or that they need to go out to the tracks to deal with the cars ? Is it an IR beam across the tracks ?
Yellow posts are the structure for a radiation detector. The technology isn’t perfect. Voids in the material can set it off as a member of train crew who’s recently received radiation therapy
Sadoff that was once in Berlin Wi had those at there scale as you drove in I’m sure there are many other yards that use them but this is the first I’ve seen on a rail .
It could be in case there are pieces of metal sticking out of the side of the gondolas or something, to sort of push it back in or give you a warning before it gets to some mainline somewhere and takes out another train or building?
I believe they are detectors for overhanging loads. If something is sticking out to far, it reacts like a dragging equipment indicator, someone gets a report immediately and the movement is stopped.
@@shadetree6981 you do realize this is a shortline right? I mean I don't agree with railways running longer trains with less crews but after I took my buyout from CN all the mainline from Chicago to Nashville was good for 70 mph freight....we have the best railways for tonnage but they are starting to over do it....only Australia and Brasil have us beat on tonnage and that's because Australia is the lack of highways, Brasil because no maintenance on the roads since 1964....shortlines like pioneer took something that was nothing and revamped all their lines....the guy that runs this company takes his profit to buy historical locomotives and passenger cars.
They are a smaller railroad and do the best they can it costs lots of money for rails and ties . They are not CN, UP or CP rails that move much more freight
@nathanlind2463 it's a shortline so they don't have their own signal dept. so they are probably waiting for their signal contractor to show up. The next hurdle is finding parts for those 80 year old signals.
@@nathanlind2463 sadly the owner uses all his profits for historical locomotives and passenger cars while he should be buying ties... Iron mountain should just be crossbuck only as toilet users just ignore flashers. Bet those people don't stop to use bathroom and try to hold it in as long as they can
Great video thanks Jason their very lucky that those rails held up at least they made it
Another great looking video. Crisp images. Steady shots. Very nice.

Yup, Waupaca Foundry has that at their scale house too.
Many scrap yards scan incoming loads before they are unloaded.
Well, you said it before I could. That’s what it is a radiation detector. They have it for trucks too. Now the big question is will the load get refused at its final destination??
@daledrawbond1222 well yea it works both ways loads and empties
Another Great video! Super views with the camera! Thanks for all the Great videos and Commentary!
Love the videos sir! Keep em coming!
Detectors for preventing overload of cars ??Hey Jason, keep on going !!
Cool zoomed in videoing of train before crossing Breen to Sagola! The shot down Merritt Ave in Iron Mountain never disappoints!
Good Wednesday morning, Jason!
Shure is cool listening to the turbo's spooling up
Jason,
This is a very nice video. I have been a RailFan for some 45 years now. I live in East Hartford, CT.
I must Drive 25 to 35 miles to watch CSX & Ct. Southern
That thumbnail of the train sitting lopsided it's amazing how it's able to stay on these sketchy tracks.
Very good shot of the train coming at you. Glad I don't have to be outside to watch them. Thanks Jason.
Great photography. thanks for the video. that track could use some tamping
Radiation detectors, steel mills require clean scrap , usually have their own detectors!

Another great video Jason thank you. Did you notice the count on the log cars again yep odd number five happy new year
How in the hell does a train even stay on those crazy looking tracks ! LOL
Especially the thumb nail look how lopsided it is 😂

looks like the tracks need some repair where he's going through the town
How about putting a drone up and capturing some scenes of the inner workings of Altir Metals.
I enjoy that video👍👍

Those tracks by Alter Metal Look Like a Swayback Horse
And they still having fix the crossing yet.
Jason: Turn off the Priority feature on the scanner, that will stop it from cutting in and out all the time.

Those tracks are about to be taken o/s like 5mph

What happened to the Orange dump truck?
they have radiation detector at the scale at their racine location. there have been cases in several countries where people stole abandoned medical equipment, scrapped it and the broke open lead containers released cobalt60 pellets into the yard scrap and caused a catastrophe. people died
What happened to all the snow?
Seems odd to me that personnel working there were not informed prior.
Did they get that switch fixed
Have you fixed your headlights in the red car yet Jason?
What happened to the F Unit that they used to run a couple years back?
In storage out of service with a blown traction motor I was told.
18:53 Unless an EXEMPT crossing, that LP truck is required to stop and it looked like it didn't even slow down.
Could they be detecting the readers on the car.
They are probably monitoring the load qty per car
Is the detector to alert the employees of a train ?
For safety ?
Or that they need to go out to the tracks to deal with the cars ?
Is it an IR beam across the tracks ?
Squeeling - Curvature & Weight….. 🙃
Is it time for 1221's 92-day inspection?
If it’s to detect radiation, what would be the source? Ground up car bodies wouldn’t contain any.
Our local yard has those detectors. I got there and set them off from radiation from the slag.
stolen medical equipment

Car Counters?
Still no idea why they haul those scrap metal cars north just to bring them back
and what ever happened to ELS 402 you now the GP they had.
I heard it had a major failure in its prime mover and is out of service. Doubtful it will return if that's the case.
Thats an easy fix, if you want to spend the money but often an engine has other issues as well ( high voltage ground ) for ex.
Those could be prox sensors to check for anything oversize or "dragging" on the sides of the cars
Shouldn't there be close clearance warning signs by the detector?
I was thinking radiation detector bur Alter Metal does not receive scrap metal by rail car as AIM Saint John did. I am very curious.
But they DO ship out shredded scrap by rail, so the rad detector likely checks the outgoing loads.
Wonder how many trans ELS runs on that line? 5-6 a week?
2-3, sometimes 4-6, many times none for a week or two.......
Looks like scrap metal
Are they a scrap metal dealer ?
Yes, they are.
It could be in case there are pieces of metal sticking out of the side of the gondolas or something, to sort of push it back in or give you a warning before it gets to some mainline somewhere and takes out another train or building?
503 - Hence all the loaded pulpwood cars as a handle???
Yes, the railroad does not want the engine beyond the clearance point account of its weight …
YellowPosts - RFID readers for car numbers???
Too high for RFID.
@ Mounted in posts?
Maybe Altec or railroad needs to have it work lie an app so they get credit for product or services
I believe they are detectors for overhanging loads. If something is sticking out to far, it reacts like a dragging equipment indicator, someone gets a report immediately and the movement is stopped.
That's what I just said
Old ELS bldg 1:00m
If they aren't going to fix the crossing signals, then take them down! Pathetic excuse for a railroad company.
It's is sad what we've done to our railroads by neglecting them. Most countries are building new rail while we let ours go to chit.

school again
Do train engines have transponders like boats and airplanes? Maybe sneak out late one night and Gorilla Glue an Airtag to an inconspicuous spot? 🤔🤫😁
Yes, all Class 1’s for both the engines and the etd’s….
@mshum538 One would think that would be pretty standard these days.
probly metal detectors 😂😂

I want one of those horns on my car.
Better late than never what's good Jason?🫡🙏
