Marcus Antonius Also he really REALLY doesn’t want to crash, and he only had a few laps to get used to the car. When you think that the difference between a good and bad F1 car might be 4 seconds, 8 seconds off the pace isn’t too bad.
As has been said, the extra weight was a big thing even back in 1998. When you take that into account it was an impressive lap. Nowadays, the cars are lighter and the drivers are even thinner to make the car go super fast which is kind of a shame.
Murray Walker is the voice and half the fun of F1 in Britain hes never lost his inner 10 yr old. i'm surprised he didnt get in an F1 car sooner. Martin Brundle is a gentleman driver. petition the M.P.s and the sports council. Murray Walker needs to be honoured in his lifetime. great video.
He did. McLaren let him drive 3 laps of Silverstone in Lauda's 1983 MP4/4 back in the '80s. At least he was supposed to drive 3 laps. He got carried away, missed the pit board calling him in and did 5, then stopped in the Tyrrell pit box by mistake.
I can honestly say Murray Walker, more than anything, is responsible for me getting into Formula 1. More than the cars, the speed, the drivers...it was his commentary that kept me coming back race after race.
If anyone deserved to live for an entire century then it was Murray, I'm old enough to recall his commentary days pre F1 though by '78 when he went full time I was hooked largely due to his commentary. I knew he'd done the two seater laps but never seen it. I didn't realise he was almost blind to the surroundings because of the bodywork right in front of his face. It must be like riding a rollercoaster blindfolded with a multi thousand rpm soundtrack and wind noise piped straight into your ears. Martin did a sterling job of relaying where they were on track.
Same, you can really sense what it meant to him and to Martin to be able to do that for him. Can we bring Murray back for Silverstone once a year, surely no one would object to this!!
Murray was happy to receive an OBE, however he was approached twice about receiving a Knighthood but didn't consider himself worthy enough, so turned it down each time. He served in WWII, as well as his other numerous accolades, so personally I think he is well worthy of a Knighthood!! He's 95 now, so I hope, before it's too late, and if he believes he's worthy of it, that this Christmas the Queen upgrades his OBE to a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) - or maybe even Companion of Honour [for services to broadcast] (a VERY distinguished accolade, which not many people receive, for example, even Paul McCartney has only just received the Honour this year), (or maybe even both in the coming year's honours schedule) in the New Year's Honours List. I hope he accepts it, if he is offered it. I think Loughborough University should offer him an honorary doctorate as well, or, an honorary MA in aeronautical and automotive engineering and motorsport. That would be a lovely and suitably apt honour. And, while we're at it, the Freedom of Northampton medal and seal. (Silverstone is in Northamptonshire) that would also be an adorable honour that he would be very deserving of. And you Aussie fans, who are motorsport mad - I know you love Murray Walker in Australia, and he's a hero to you guys.. Please petition the Lieutenant Governor of Victoria (Linda Dessau), home of the Melbourne Grand Prix, who has lieutenant's privilege to propose candidates for Queen's honours, the Governor General of Australia, (his Excellency Sir Peter Cosgrove) or his deputy, (The Hon. Ken Lay), who also have special privilege to propose a shortlist for honours, like crazy and plead that they can put Murray Walker on their shortlist for the New Year's honours! And if Prince Charles, or Prince Harry, can put a good word in - as they are motorsport fans - and have a little word in Murray's ear, to persuade him, then he might, just might, be persuaded to accept a Knighthood before he pops his clogs. Although I hope he doesn't do that for a few years yet. It was upsetting to hear that Murray has been very ill recently, and 95, so it's not going to be too long sadly.. My god, I'm going to shed a tear when that day comes. And everyone in the pitlane, not least Martin, will be in floods of tears. So following the Queen's birthday next summer, I want to see Murray Walker styled as follows, at the very least:- Murray Walker, CH CBE MA IMechE MSc (Hon.) And before I sign off, just a quick note about the Companion of Honour. This order, is, in many ways higher, or is recognised as a more important distinguished honour, than a Knighthood. There can only be a maximum of 65 Companions of Honour in the UK at any one time. The Order is recognised for nationally important service, which in Murray's case, speaks for itself. It is, in some ways, the equivalent of the French Legion d'honneur, although the latter confers a similar rank of Knighthood in France - but is often recognised for similar credibility as the CH. Go Murray! Happy Birthday, and we love you.
