Grace! I’m an assistant manager at a Cinemark in the Midwest. This is what cinema use to be - you could go and watch a variety of movies that appealed to different audiences. This hasn't been the case for years as superhero movies dominated the screens. Great to see the whole family can go to a cinema and watch different things.
With the success of “Moana 2” wonder if Disney has plan to green light “Encanto 2”? Especially considering that it’s Disney’s second most streamed movie in their platform.
I liked Moana 2, but I think it is a little unfair that much better movies like The Wild Robot and Transformers One didn't get a better box office. We live in a world that love sequels.
Oblivious reasons why Moana 2 had a gigantic opening weekend: 1. The popularity of the first film that led to huge success on Disney+ 2. Good word of mouth 3. First animated film since Wild Robot 4. Even if it isn’t perfect, Moana 2 is way better than Wish and Strange World. Wicked, on the other hand, for their incredible performance is due to how phenomenal this film was especially for those that hasn’t seen the broadway musical and those that have seen it, Ariana Grande is still popular with fans and the marketing campaign was amazing that was inspired by Barbie.
I don’t think word of mouth is a reason at all. Everyone I’ve talked to just thing is was underwhelming. It’s a movie that is unstoppable force for opening weekend because everyone wants to see it, shit the first Moana is one of my favorites and I’ve seen it at least 5 times this month to prepare for 2. I think it might be similar to Multiverse of Madness so we’ll see the 2nd weekend drop.
@turtlesnail9824- I think the good word of mouth was from the positive audience scores at RT and Cinema Score. The reason Moana did so well with Latinos and black people is because despite the fact that she is neither one of those, she LOOKS like the average latina girl and the average half-white black girl, and she is AN ORIGINAL CHARACTER. That combination is the key. ORIGINAL CHARACTER + IDENTIFICATION

Moana 2: come on, it's a disney movie, no matter how good or bad it's still going to make Money.
Bob Iger’s decision to pivot the Moana streaming series into Moana 2 is a stroke of genius. I think it’s one of the smartest decisions he’s made since coming back as CEO and showcases his deep understanding of Disney’s core audience.
Well "fan hate" sounds like fans of the previous movie were upset with the latest. I don't know if you should call them fans. Of course if you go to a movie with expectations and leave disappointed, you're right to say it was a stinker. But somehow this notion that because it was a direct-to-streaming show changed to be theater-worthy that it's a lousy cash-grab didn't keep audiences away from _Moana 2._
@@AverageJoe483 going to a sports game costs the same amount as going to a Disney park for the day. It’s all about whether you think it’s worth it. The prices need to be high for the service they provide. I agree it’s certainly NOT cheap, but they’re not a charity.

My daughter and I went to see Wicked this weekend. My town got a new theater and everyone was out and it was fun to see a theater packed. Absolutely enjoyed the moment.
I like Moana 2, it’s a fun and entertaining movie! The animation is beautiful, the new characters are great additions, and Moana is an amazing protagonists and a wonderful role model for young kids (especially girls)! My main problem is that it felt “shorter” than the first movie, despite having almost the same runtime. The plot felt too rushed that it didn’t allow enough time to establish the seriousness of the plot’s main conflict or what was at stake if Moana had chose to do nothing? Just my thoughts!
For sure at least on par with S1. The development time is what it is. It's a long production cycle that is a must for this level of amazing visuals and detailed animation. The question is: will they use Fortiche again for the upcoming sequel series? This will be important if they want to transition the structure of future projects from 2 to 3 season, as well as reducing the long development time. They have so many ideas for shows lined up and I think Fortiche is an amazing studio, but it took Arcane 7+ years to produce 18 episodes. It's just not feasible to do Noxus, Ionia, etc with just one fantastic studio helming every project.
That’s why I KNOW “Wicked” will cross the billion dollar mark. Repeat viewership. You & your husband are responsible for 6 tickets in just one week. And I’ve heard of a lot of other people that did the exact, same thing.
Most online hate campaigns don't work... But they hate everything that has black ppl or women, so when one inevitably fails, they just make even more videos about it, so it seems like they work more often than they do
I saw all three this weekend, including Wicked for the second time. Grace is so right in that it has a remarkable re-watchability factor. I'm planning on seeing it a third time in the next few weeks.
I’ve seen it 3 times and the third time was by far my favorite watch because you notice so many intricate details you don’t notice the first few times.

The line for popcorn wasn’t moving very fast. The movie started at 4:00pm I didn’t get my popcorn, soda, or to my seat until 4:25pm I was a bit upset but I sat and waited for the movie to hook me in. I’m glad I saw Wicked. I read the book in high school I’m now 33 I’m not sure anyone is prepared for Part 2. 👀
Glicked was wild… but Glickoana? I have never seen my theatre that packed. Hey I went four times this week. To rewatch wicked, see gladiator 2, Moana 2 with my niece, and again with a friend.
Forget Encanto, Grace. We need to get Disney to turn Tiana’s Disney+ series into The Princess and the Frog 2 for a hand-drawn animated style and a theatrical release in Thanksgiving 2029 as the last film for WDAS in the 2020’s before the decade is over. I mean even Tiana’s popularity can be supercharged by her new ride at Disney World and Disneyland (Tiana’s Bayou Adventure).
I decided to go see moana Thursday afternoon out of the blue. Drove to the theather without checking showtimes, got there 5 minutes before a showing, and got the last seat in that room. Had a great time!
Frozen is based on "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen, not on "Wicked". If we are talking about source material (the books), the novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was published in 1900, while "The Snow Queen" was published in 1844. So, Wizard of Oz and subsequent stories can only be inspired by The Snow Queen (not saying they are), not the other way around!
Maybe she is saying it because of the themes of the relationship between women supporting each other and a protagonist with powers embracing herself. Both originals weren't centered in those themes but added for the adaptations and Wicked the musical made those changes before Frozen
I'm a male, and I saw Wicked on Friday at my AMC Rosedale 14 with my family and friend. 💚 ❤ It was super busy, and I loved the atmosphere. ❤ Lots of families, couples, friends. ❤Movie night. ❤

So impressive!! It looks like Super Moana is going to do Super Mario numbers. She is such a strong IP that can get mixed reviews like Mario but they have no effect on her too. Both characters are in the super rare category of being critic proof, audiences just want to see them on screen no matter what. Only Moana & Mario can do a billion worldwide on mixed reviews. She is unstoppable!
Lol plenty of movies do well despite bad critic scores lol. Most ppl dont care about some out of touch critic opinions. It's all about creators getting audiences excited an giving them products they actually want.

I’ve never seen more than 2 or 3 other people in this theater’s lobby - ever. I was shocked when I arrived to find it absolutely packed with people. Busiest I’ve ever seen it.
Not iconic, but what's the word? Making themselves irrelevant or ineffective so someone else might step in and do what they're supposed to do? Do they just forget the week's numbers when they do go back to work, or release them with the next week's, or just fall another week behind?
This week has been such an exciting week to keep track of the box office. So much money, so many records broke and to see multiple films thriving. It’s great to see so many people rushing out to the theatres, excited to see films on the big screen.
I just got out of Wicked and Loved it. We saw it in DBox and the chair was dancing through life completely hyped for part 2. And Gladiator 2 was fun as well, can’t say I agree with grace on that Denzel should get a supporting actor Oscar nod for that.
4 minutes in - so you're saying different movies can appeal to DIFFERENT audiences, and don't have to try to cater to everyone at all times? I'm shocked SHOCKED
If Netflix was smart and kept the Knives Out films in theaters then it could be Wicked 2 (women), Knives Out 3 (men), and Zootopia 2 (family) for Thanksgiving 2025

@@jadeprincepk really? Why does everyone in the movie have a problem with a green colored human when talking animals exist?

Bob Iger’s decision to pivot the Moana streaming series into Moana 2 is a stroke of genius.
I think it’s one of the smartest decisions he’s made since coming back as CEO and showcases his deep understanding of Disney’s core audience.
What the embargo shows is that they don't do it because the movie itself has a problem; they do it to run damage control on the online fan hate.
I can't believe anyone doubted Moana 2 making $1B
The Disney hate is a grift among those online notably among the Fandom menace crowd
Who doubted it ?
@@luismedrano6680some Disney hate is warranted . Have you seen the park prices ? Only the rich can afford it now . Well outside Walt’s vision .
people are doubting mufasa too
@@AverageJoe483 going to a sports game costs the same amount as going to a Disney park for the day. It’s all about whether you think it’s worth it. The prices need to be high for the service they provide. I agree it’s certainly NOT cheap, but they’re not a charity.
OMG I was waiting all holiday weekend for THIS🎉🎉
I saw Wicked 3 times over this past week! I cannot get enough. I've waited for this movie my entire life (not an exaggeration!) I'm so invested in its success that I've been reloading your channel waiting for this week's Movie Math lmao
This is me. I could’ve written this comment haha
My daughter and I went to see Wicked this weekend. My town got a new theater and everyone was out and it was fun to see a theater packed. Absolutely enjoyed the moment.
We lost 2000 screens (I think was the number) during the Pandemic. I wonder how many came back?
Moana 2 was excellent movie. Yes, music was decent at best but did love the story. It was for kids and adults. Music can be fixed on Moana 3.
Red One's opening weekend...didnt even cover Dwayne's salary 😂!! Wow! Theyre gonna need a couple more of these holds 😂!
Arcane seadon 2 is BIGGER than season One. The delay DID hurt it, though.
Hey grace! Happy start of December! Thank you for movie math as always!!
My husband and I were definitely apart of this event we saw wicked 3 times and Moana 2 waiting for gladiator to come out in streaming
That’s why I KNOW “Wicked” will cross the billion dollar mark. Repeat viewership. You & your husband are responsible for 6 tickets in just one week. And I’ve heard of a lot of other people that did the exact, same thing.
If you don’t go see Gladiator 2 girl I command you. 😂😂😂
Most online hate campaigns don't work... But they hate everything that has black ppl or women, so when one inevitably fails, they just make even more videos about it, so it seems like they work more often than they do
Happy Sunday Grace I’m so happy that both Wicked and Moana 2 are doing amazing I liked both movies. Enjoy ur holiday season ❤
I was planning to take my niece to Moana but she ended up with a stomach bug and not only did we not go to the movie, she missed out on Thanksgiving on both sides of the family, poor kid. We've rescheduled to this Friday, though!
Oh no, I hope she feels better soon and you can both still get to see Moana together!
If she likes the first movie, she’ll definitely like the sequel!
I really miss when you did comic book reviews Grace, that's how I discovered you from your comic book industry coverage. 😓😓
I went to a matinee showing in my small town and Moana 2 was sold out. I wanted to see Wicked anyways but I was on the fence because of controversies following Ariana and Cynthia.
IT'S A THANKSGIVING MIRACLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I adore hearing Grace talk about Wicked. I’m so happy we have another movie to discuss in a year 💚🩷
Forget Encanto, Grace.
And I wanna congratulate Moana! Huge win for the animation industry.
I feel like that was the wild robot, not Moana 2
Actually inside out 2 has already became legend
I decided to go see moana Thursday afternoon out of the blue. Drove to the theather without checking showtimes, got there 5 minutes before a showing, and got the last seat in that room. Had a great time!
The hate videos haven’t affected Moana 2 because It’s a movie for little kids not grown men babies.
LMAO so true
Yeah blame the men for no reason 🙄
Needed this movie math to end my week after a busy day shopping thank you grace ❤❤
I'm a male, and I saw Wicked on Friday at my AMC Rosedale 14 with my family and friend. 💚 ❤ It was super busy, and I loved the atmosphere. ❤ Lots of families, couples, friends. ❤Movie night. ❤
Yeah for straight men it's the same as Barbie we like the atmosphere and also how much it makes our spouses/girlfriends happy
I was there the day after! Neat to see another person from Minnesnowta. I ended up seeing it twice in one day. standard matinee and 3d at night
How was the 3D? I'm not usually a big fan bc I don't like how hard it is to see the darker images/scenes with the glasses .

Watched Red One, Wicked (twice), Gladiator 2, and Moana 2. I don't see myself being too excited for movie releases in December, but November was fresh and full of variety.🤙
So ironic when you say demos, the fact 75% of Americans only represented 11% of the audience is not a good thing…
I'm sorry for being slow but I'm not following?
So impressive!! It looks like Super Moana is going to do Super Mario numbers. She is such a strong IP that can get mixed reviews like Mario but they have no effect on her too.
Both characters are in the super rare category of being critic proof, audiences just want to see them on screen no matter what. Only Moana & Mario can do a billion worldwide on mixed reviews. She is unstoppable!
Lol plenty of movies do well despite bad critic scores lol. Most ppl dont care about some out of touch critic opinions. It's all about creators getting audiences excited an giving them products they actually want.
@@LouiepTvyes many do well but not many make a billion worldwide. I don't know another movie with a mixed rotten tomatoes score to get a billion. I think only Mario and Moana are untouchable right now.
@@waterbearer4627the first Aquaman had mixed reviews and still made a billion dollars 🤷♂️
@@nanakwameasiedu-amponsah1405 Yes! Good knowledge I forgot that. Aquaman was untouchable too until Aquaman 2 came out. Let's see if Mario 2 and Moana 3 will do a billion and cement their status as critic proof IPs whatever happens. Right now it's about them
Reviewers have too much power to unfairly tank movies. I'm glad that studios are starting to figure out how to get the upper hand.
Many reviewers are prejudging Moana 2 negatively because it was initially a TV series.
@@nubby2790and they are discounting it too just because Lin Miranda wasn’t part of it even though the songs was good and the actual Polynesian music with Polynesian artist did amazing singing the songs.
Hollywood did a good job of having something for everyone this Thanksgiving.
Went to see Moana on Thanksgiving Day but I was still driving by our AMC over the weekend and that parking lot was packed. Haven’t seen that amount of cars in years and it actually makes me happy to see people show up.
I wanted to go to AMC to see Wicked because they have reclining seats lol but they were sold out so had to go to showplace cinema and their bad seats instead.
So, we are possibly going back to 4 movies for 4 quadrants vs the 4-quadrants blockbusters that dominated for the last ~15 years
Had to go see Wicked on Saturday at the smallest, oldest, dingiest theater in town because it was sold out everywhere else (I’m in fresno, ca). I’ve never seen more than 2 or 3 other people in this theater’s lobby - ever. I was shocked when I arrived to find it absolutely packed with people. Busiest I’ve ever seen it.
I saw Gladiator 2 with a group of friends and man was it hard to get tickets! The theater was so packed it took a half hour to get concessions
Nielsen becomes more iconic by the week 😭they’re so funny
Not iconic, but what's the word? Making themselves irrelevant or ineffective so someone else might step in and do what they're supposed to do? Do they just forget the week's numbers when they do go back to work, or release them with the next week's, or just fall another week behind?
@@sandal_thong8631they just updated it the following day lol
Just saw Wicked today with my family and loved it! Couldn’t help but tear up at the ending. Will definitely be seeing part 2 next year :)
Saw it last Friday. Got chills at the end ❤.
With Moana's disney+ show turned movie doing so well... is there any chance TIANA'S show could get a similar upgrade??!!!
I’m curious to know, as well! If that comes to pass, hopefully Tiana gets all the time it needs to be reworked properly into a film.
4 minutes in - so you're saying different movies can appeal to DIFFERENT audiences, and don't have to try to cater to everyone at all times? I'm shocked SHOCKED
First. Thanks queen!!
Lol actually, I was the third 😅
If Netflix was smart and kept the Knives Out films in theaters then it could be Wicked 2 (women), Knives Out 3 (men), and Zootopia 2 (family) for Thanksgiving 2025
I think Wicked will end around Dune Two's gross at 700 million ish
I was waiting for this!!
ARCANE SEASON 2 IS JUST BIGGER THAN SEASON 1!
I saw Wicked on Thanksgiving. My screening was packed.
