I firmly believe that the early 80's alternative is as every bit as imaginative and important to music history as the late 60's. The alternative music in the early 80's is like none other, and will never be again.
When Sofia Coppola choosed this music as soundtrack she couldn't have a better choice..... New Order and this part of History of France fits so so well even if it's a romance... It's amazing.....
I saw this movie first run and at first was taken aback by the absence of Mozart, et al. But quickly realized that using modern alternative rock, etc., was a perfect merge between contemporary youth and the youth on the screen who were also breaking the changes of stuffiness and the...been there, seen that, Heard it! I do believe, however, that there is certainly room for another MA movie, if it can ever be afforded (like Titanic). Just one example is Marie Antoinette's travel from Vienna to Versaille. Her entourage was five miles long with hundreds of nobility in many many carriages accompanying her. It took 6 weeks and required no less than 30 thousand horses. Every night's stop was an ultimate honour for the castle or grand maison that tried to outdo the others in festivities with lavish fetes. But just as we all know reality is much different than the fantasy on the screen. Instead of her BFF, friends and pals her Mother Maria Therese insisted that her sumptuous carriage (one of two) only included her Mother's (old lady) friends. What a bore for her. And best to remember that these luxuriant attitudes were, for hundreds, evan thousands of years considered to be, by all, their God given rights. Not like today when we know that multi millionaires, billionaires and oligarchs are just greedy, self serving sobs (mostly).
I have been hoping for another MA movie or even a mini series to come out on her life. I liked this movie but I certainly did not love it, mainly because I felt the dialogue was really cheesy. Given that movies and TV series are made all the time and redone on other popular royalty like Henry VIII, the Tudor dynasty, and Catherine the Great (there have been like 4 shows that have come out about her life like within the last 5-10 years), as well as others, I don't see how Hollywood wouldn't have the budget to recreate MA's story. She is one of history's biggest figures and it is surprising how little screen time she has gotten. She deserves way more air time, and have someone to accurately portray her and her story!
Thank u for this comment I had no clue about her journey to Versailles. I fell in love with this movie and it's soundtrack but I need to learn more about Marie.
Ecoutez bien cette chanson! LISTEN TO THIS TRACK! New Order - Age Of Consent Peter Hooks's Bass line is driving and hypnotic! Bernie Sumner (Who is not a singer) sings without any real effects, and pulls off a perfect and very soulful performance. Who needs a drum machine when you've got Stephen Morris?... He is so tight! What a masterpiece this is!
+William H. Baird Totally with you...It's definitely one of my all-time favorite New Order songs-- and that's a hard thing to judge. (Elegia is up there too). And yes, Bernie was never a great singer, but he actually pulls it off well. Amazing band and under-appreciated in the U.S. at the time. Thank the Gods for WDRE in NY!

Okey, so, finally.... SUMMER !!!! Now, as every summer since 2007, My friend and I dress up like late 18th century people and have picnics at the countryside, I hope you don't remove this file, since it means a lot to me : ) Vive New Order and Marie Antoinette!

New Order is simply sublime... Its sound is amazing.. I was checking the Temptation video the other day and .. It is SO refreshing... Such a pure sound.. Fucking awesome!!!
There's no official video for this song so this vid is better than nothing. I am thankful that the movie "Marie Antoinette" introduced this song to a new generation.
I've been infused with this song and the fabulous editing...can't seem to get it out of my mind...just the best of visual and music...it;s like I have to watch every day...makes my day..Patrick D. Mulcahy (producer of more than 500 videos)
"they havent got the converse logo on them or anything" i don't know if you have ever actually seen a pair of converse shoes, but the logo is on the inner side of the foot...which on one shoe that side is faced the ground.. and on the other shoe, that side is faced slightly away from the camera. its not a case of the logos not being there, but that you can't see the logos in the shot. perhaps because she didn't want to endorse the brand/wasn't getting paid to have the shows shown in the film.
alot of the music for the movie makes sense if you listen to the lyrics. the opening "Natural's Not in It" by Gang of Four talks about the indulgence of the upper class, and "Hong Kong Garden" by Siouxsie and the Banshees mentions "selling your daughter". Age of Consent is about a relationship gone wrong. great movie, great soundtrack!
Beautiful movie- even better the brilliant music that sounded like it was made for this period in time- magical- never saw anything like it in a movie.
Cool! I had no idea this was an old-school punk band. Can't believe I had never heard this song before, especially since I love 80's music! Thanks for the info.
I absolutely fell in love with everything about this movie! Sophia Coppola incorporated every single aspect of art in it, it was trippy and magical. I was so pissed off at those shitty critics that gave this movie bad ratings, because they dont know shit about nothing! I never listen to those morons that pretend know whats good, but there are so many people that do and miss out on so many cool movies because of what they say =( FUCK THE RATINGS, MA FOR LIFE!
GREAT video! I think this movie was fantastic but the american public pretty much trashed it because Sofia didnt include the 'end' but really it wasnt needed as its history and she knew that. Anyways great work and I need a pastry now :).

@Larssos I don’t feel personally responsible for events that occurred before I was born. But I am a microscopic part of my country and planet’s history. The people living in a modern state share a language, memories, music, landscape, culture. What people did (or not) a century ago is affecting me. I am part of history through my political opinions. My behavior and decisions will affect the next generations. I belong to the planet's history, appreciating with you Maria Antonieta’s sound track.
@172hannon ...I know, right!! I didn't catch it until after a few watches...totally intentional on Sophia Coppolla's part, of course. I only noticed it because that's one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
I just realized something about the english translation of what M. Antoinette answered, when she was informed that the people have no bread. In english they say: ...let them have cake. Since I speak french (I'm originally german) I translate it, how she said it: If they don't have bread, they should eat brioche. Brioche is not a cake. It's a sweet soft kind of bread. I wonder how they teach it in school.
Actually, I think what Hudu was referring to was that she didn't do anything to ease the suffering of the people of France. She may have been nicer than history has given her, but her apathy to use her influence to act ensured her place in history as a true villain.
Watch the BBC studio version here on TH-cam - they are fucking high as kites and the energy in the room can seriously be felt!!! It will send chills down your spine - for real!
It's amazing to see how foreign people feel concerned by french history. No body can rewritten any story in any country. Facts are what they are and you have to live with these !!
But I think the French hated the movie because I was in Versaille, a week ago and at the palace shop they had every imaginable version of Marie Antoinette's life except Sophia's film. I was quite surprised not to see it and I even asked and they, didn't know which it was :O ! Anyway, great movie and sound!
beautiful movie but seemingly only scratched the surface. Coppola could've gone way deeper and perhaps still could. The way the movie ended left it open to tell the rest of Marie Antoinettes story. :) BTW---I LOVED THIS MOVIE!
Actually, historians think it is very unlikely that Louis underwent the operation, based on details from his Journal where he recorded his daily hunting activities. The operation would have required him to cease riding for several weeks, and his Journal never shows any breaks from that activity. More likely, the consummation could be credited to an educational visit from Marie Antoinette's brother, Emperor Joseph II.
the sneakers were put on purpose by Sofia Coppola to tell people that the movie was not a historical movie, it was more of an art movie. She put the Converses there to represent the fact that Marie Antoinette was still a child.
Astonishing how a film brings great sounds to the attention of the ignorant. Imagine if the new, new New Order fans who saw this, and then liked the band - if they had bothered to overlook modern media hype and marketing: they would have explored music, found treasures like this without being pushed on by a film. New Order, bless them, would have wealthy folk a long time ago.
What you have written is maybe true but if there are two things we love to share is our culture and our gastronomy. Anyone on this planet can appreciate these two main parts of France.
@alejandra504 I agree People can't think for themselves sometimes. They let the media choose for them what looks good and they don't realize it. I actually heard that this later on was an over looked great movie the other day for its visual appeal.
