    Hey, don't worry too much about your " monotone tone ". I find it actually perfect for this kind of content. As a non native english speaker, I really value a focus on good elocution. I sometimes have trouble clearly understanding other essayists ( such as Whitelight, his flow of voice tends to blur words together and lose me after a while ) but your voice is really clear, allowing me to listen without ever getting confused and having to rewind.
    I know you'll worry anyway because creative people are like that... But try not to. You're good. And thanks for the videos.

      Noah Caldwell Gervais is another one. He usually has interesting things to say about the games he reviews, but the way that he sometimes stumbles over his words, awkwardly pauses or hastily corrects himself is really annoying. It's so easy to edit out parts like that and I have no idea why he doesn't.

      @@runningcommentary2125 I obsessively edit out my mistakes when recording audio for my video. I probably stop every two or three sentences to make sure something doesn’t sound weird and the timing between phrases is consistent. I think this is more of my “audio perfectionism” side showing, but I definitely feel your pain there.

  • @sarezar

    That comparison to shooters and "why are you even playing this game" was unfortunate at best.
    Firstly, shooter games are primarily about shooting. RPGs of ANY kind are not about collecting discarded wine bottles.
    Second, if the arguement of "why are you even playing this game if you really dislike X" is counter intuitive and is countered by life itself; meaning, if it were valid in any way, no one would discuss critique; about anything. We criticise aspects we didn't enjoy in the experience but first we have to experience it. If we knew we wouldn't like the food we ordered, we wouldn't have ordered it.
    Thirdly - even though the previous two points are more than enough - I'll also say ""strengthening my organisation", as you put it, could have both be done end explained in many other ways. Spamming the sonar button (or pixel hunting) to click on objects I don't know why I'm collecting is very hard to justify as good, enjoyable gameplay.
    Having made my long and argumentative comment, I'll say that I am enjoying these dragon age videos - despite getting the feeling to write more the 70,000 words, too, about all the points I disagree with you 😉

    Hey JBjett I just wanted to correct something you said in the video. Corypheus is actually not the first darkspawn. If you read the ancient elven lore the “Taint” that creates darkspawn actually originated from the Ancient elves going to war with the Titans. This is why corypheus became a darkspawn when he went to the “Golden city” which is actually Arlathan the city of the ancient elves.

    • @Mrs.Pyromaniac
      @Mrs.Pyromaniac 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Correcting your correction. Corypheus and his fellow old god follower friends were the first dark spawn, Blight did exist before them but darkspawn didn't at least from the information we have. Maybe in the next game we will learn something different but Coryiphipus was part of the first darkspawn.

    • @thrillainthemanilla1409
      @thrillainthemanilla1409 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Mrs.Pyromaniac For more evidence on darkspawn predating Corypheus read codex entries on Andruil the ancient elven god who “dove into the abyss and came back corrupted”. If the taint exists in the black city which is actually Arlathan the city of the ancient elves then the elves would have to have been exposed to the taint and as such were turned to darkspawn far before the magister were. Also dwarves think darkspawn have always been in the deep roads long before the first blight occurred. Their numbers just got exponentially larger during the blight

    "I like the game so much .... it really doesn't ask much from the player"
    Well they nerfed a cRPG to a Hack&Slash, because too many players like to not been "asked much", a polite way to say low on IQ. There is nothing wrong with having games for these kind of players, but don't call it Dragon Age. Same happens to so many great titles, like Mass Effect - 2 almost eliminated the RPG elements, Final Fantasy after 10, ...
    These titles became world wide known and loved because they do require "much from the player"!

    Probs unpopular opinion, but I wish Samson was in Cullen's position. I think he'd have the ability to be a bit more empathetic for BOTH sides of the rebellion than Cullen is, who was tortured at the hands of mages, watched kirkwall fall when the rebellion began and how bad it could get, etc.
    Story wise, Samson deserved better than to leave one overzealous religious entity for another. His hatred of the chantry and what it's capable of is completely valid and I get it, but it just feels like it's out of left field to me.

      Some years later (and having since played DAO and DA2) I replayed as an elf mage. And wow... what a moving experience it was to be an elf (treated like trash) and a mage (untrustworthy) at the same time.

    Hello JBJett.
    I can tell you put a lot of effort and research into this project, and I don't mean to be rude, but I think the title of this video is a bit misleading. When people search for 'Critique' they are generally looking for an examination and analysis of the games 'Negative/Bad' sides. You make it very clear in the intro-section that's not your intention here. I only watched til the end of the 'Mechanics/Combat'-section so in fairness to you, the rest of the video may be more focused on that. Again, I hope you'll excuse my bluntness here but the section I DID watch felt a bit aimless and I wasn't sure of what point you were trying to make, as it jumps around a lot, and then settles mainly on the intricacies of the games health-management system. Lastly, I really take issue with what you say towards the end of the section: "You have to enter the experience with the right mindset". - This is a highly flawed argument in my opinion. If you buy a game called "Dragon Age" then I think it's fair to expect it to play like the other games called "Dragon Age". Dismissing the disappointment of DA:O-fans as a failure to adapt the right mindset is a bit condescending.
    Please don't take this to mean that I disliked the video or you as the creator in any way. You are clearly very talented and I wish you the best.

    • @Negonian
      @Negonian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I understand where you're coming from with the negative connotation of the word critique, but when you look it up on the dictionary this is the first definition i found "a detailed analysis and assessment of something, especially a literary, philosophical, or political theory." So when I use the word critique, I only really intend it to mean an in depth analysis of a videogame.
      As for the expectations for a game, I actually think it effects a lot since a true zelda fan could easily argue that Breath of the wild is a terrible legend of zelda game. I definitely enjoyed breath of the wild, but that is in spite of the fact that it does not satisfy half of the expectations a long time fan might be looking for. But most people entered that game with the knowledge that it was a new direction for the series, so it hardly bothered the vast majority of players. So i think that a similar thing goes for Inquisition, a fantastic game when you accept the fact that it is trying to target a different type of experience.
      Anyways, thanks for the compliments and maybe you'll resonate a bit better with one of my other critiques since I typically view games in a different light than most other reviewers.

    wonderful video, with some really compelling points, youve gained a new subscriber my friend.
    to add to your points, inquisition is the game i have the most hours in but honestly, in comparison to the previous entries, felt so hollow. it Really struck me as odd that the tranquil (and the events of asunder) were so glossed over after being such prominent peices in other installments such as in origins (esp the magi origin) and in 2. i love this game, but that comes with some trepidation on my part as it felt way more set in putting its (fantasy french-catholic) values above those of the player. also this is probs just a me thing but i Really miss the awakening crew and how tight knit they felt compared with the coworker like environment of inq.

    the biggest problem wirh inquisition was the absolute false advertisement, they promissed many administration mechanics that weren't there, many ways to interact with your party that weren't possible and grosselly exagerated some mechanics. There's also the fact that you're the leader of a great organization, but it never trully feels like it. I remember having a lot of fun with my first playthrough, but not being able to beat it a second time, which isn't really bad, for such a massive game

    First off, I really appreciate the amount of effort you put into this video, I really enjoy these kinds of long videos to just listen to while I do other things. That being said, your willingness to brush off player criticism as “they’re not playing it the way they supposed to” while not giving the devs any flack for obviously poor game design is aggravating. Players getting burnt out because of trying to 100% all the maps they come across isn’t strictly a player fault. It means that the devs pumped the maps with obnoxious levels of filler that ultimately fails to keep the player’s attention. The previous games were linear, this game wasn’t, the previous games were tactical, this game wasn’t (at least not in the same sense), and the player isn’t told any of this, not through marketing, not through in game prompts.
    Anyway, like I said, I still enjoyed your video for entertainment purposes, I just don’t agree with you stance on some of these points.

    It's interesting, what you said about the evolving world, because it immediately made me think of Elder Scrolls. Then again, Elder Scrolls was pretty much weird from the beginning, or at least from the point on when it became popular (Morrowind) and of course it just the story ahead so much that you (rarely) have this feeling of tracking the progress of concrete characters like Liliana.
    I thought your takes on the Blackwell/Solas/Iron Bull romances quite interesting. Made me wonder whether in this game the male romances are just better/the writers were more interested in them or at least in giving them more pathos and higher stakes?
    Anyway, thanks for the series. Though I did come across almost wishing you'd do an almost more Top 10 style video on what to you are the most meaningful stories or characters. (I realize that that is probably more like exactly the opposite of the kind of style you want to pursue)

    So even though my comment on the dao critique might lead you to believe I was mad and wasn't going to finish watching these critiques I still finished them cause for the most part I agree with your analysis cause I genuinely did enjoy the later games more than origins I just wish you approached origins in a more complete way before making that analysis. But aside from what I said there I still enjoyed hearing your opinion on these games cause it's so true that people put origins on this pedestal in order to say it's the only good dragon age game and that pisses me off to no end.

    It's interesting how pillars of eternity simultaneously tried the perma health versus temp guard feature and went back to just a single health bar in their sequel. It seems like health is already a finite resource so the change is not really an improvement. Ie if an enemy can do so much damage per second and you can only heal so much it's already fairly balanced, now you just have one more button click to keep your guard up instead of healing.

      My complaint is that fireball etc is no longer a tactical attack you want to place well amongst your enemies, if you have friendly fire on it's near impossible to make your allies be useful, so you turn it off and now my wizard is just another archer who can put barriers on allies as well

    This is my first dragon age game. I came from games like Zelda and Skyrim. This game gave me the open world I wanted but the style of mass effect I loved so much! It’s one of my favorite games ever! The music, gameplay, and story were all so epic! I just recently started playing it again. I only played it one time through so I’m excited to start again

    I FUCKING LOVED DRAGON AGE INQUISITION!!!!!! Like I cant even. I’m not a ‘hardcore’ gamer. I never spent as many hours on a game in my life I think I played 150+ hours on my first playthrough. Nothing compares to it. I mustve played like ten hours of it, then put it down and said ‘fuck this shit’ and then I picked it up like 18 months later and I got into it and GOD FUCK DAMN HOLY FUCK ITS THE GREATEST GAME EVER BRO.

    Playing this in 2020/2021 with the SAD state of rpg's standards today, this game is a damn masterpiece. It is weird to me that of the games of this era, Witcher 3 gets all the praise even tho as a RPG, W3 fails on nearly all fronts, labeling it such is a mistake, its an action adventure game. While this game actually has RPG mechanics and systems. I digress, this game is fantastic. I only have it on origin, ive gotta say ive literally never had one bug that i noticed or any problems at all with it. It runs surprisingly perfect. I dont seem to have any issues you have, nor do i have dl speed throttling with origin. Not sure whats up there, strange how one person has one experience, and i have the opposite. This leads me to believe that your computer and internet is part of the issue here.

    Then leaving it on how they’re both better than Origins clearly explain why you made these critiques to begin with. You shouldn’t be trying to prove whats better than what. You should be analyzing the story and characters in all forms in the given media, and then if something happens to be better. That shouldn’t have any bias in it. I get it, you like the other two games

    Regarding the problem people have with burning themselves out ticking all the boxes in the Hinterlandands early on: the problem for me was that every previous Bioware RPG trained me to want to do all the side content as early as possible. In previous Bioware fames, side content is limited, but essential for reaching high levels because there are rarely chances to grind. That's not the type of game Inquisition is, but Inquisition does not comminicate that clearly enough or early enough.

    I think your series is very bias. There’s a tonal shift from the DA:2 critique on, especially with that long ass companions analysis in the DA:2 vid. Not that i disagree with everything you say, i agree with a great many things you’ve said in all three videos. I just think some of the things you boil it down to trying to prove that DA:2 and inquisition is better than origins. Which is fine if you think that, I’m not judging your taste in video game. Yk, origins isn’t perfect and its my favorite. There’s just companions and quest lines you’d straight up ignore in the origins critique, in the inquisition critique you do the same thing lol. I felt like throughout all these videos, i was fed why DA:2 is the best. DA:I is the next runner up, and DA:O’s companions suck, and the story is just a “standard good vs evil story” wtf? If you put the time into da:o’s companions and story and da:i’s companions that you put into the second game. Then this series would be 10/10, it just needed all that bias taken out

      AND the qunari are not socialists? The Qun is clearly a collective religion, but they’re not trying to “eat the rich” they want to invade thedas and make their RELIGION the dominant faction dominating the feudal fantasy game. Much like the chantry, and the inquisition prior to it, AND the Ben-Hassirath use the same underhanded tactics as the chantry

      I agree with your comment(s). I must confess, I despise DA:I - it's a Disney Theme Park compared to Origins or DA 2. BioWare tried to make this game good, but they failed imho. Of course this is only my personal opinion. For me, the DA series - beginning with Origins - is much about a darker undertone. Gruesome and tragic events, many rather morally grey quests and decisions to make, in part with horrible outcomes (just remember the quest in DA 2 where you have to wipe out a whole elven group because of some selfish and outright dangerous decisions made by keeper Marethari who should have been confident in Merrill instead). This was - at least in my first playtrough - completely unexpected and shocking.
      Nothing even remotly shocking like that did ever occur in DA:I. There are many rather light hearted fantasy RPG's out there and this is fine, but the DA series is more about dark fantasy where the hero is not always really heroic, where the line between good and evil is blurred... and all that is completely missing in DA:I. It's too... shiny, too black and white.
      And... at least for me it was completely ridiculous that I as the leader of the Inquisition should go out in the field to pick flowers and herbs and should go hunting animals...
      BioWare tried hard to bring back memorable companions with interesting personal quests but compared to DA 2 and DA:O they failed horribly (and don't get me started on Krem and Dorian - Mr. „I'm gay and my daddy don't like it“. Dorian is a very interesting character, but BioWare tried to push a SJW agenda into the game which is imho a big no no. This should be a fantasy RPG, not a playground for real world LGBT-problems).
      DA:I is kind of an „Ubisoft“ Dragon Age game, with unnecessary fillers all over the place to stretch game time. Compared to DA:O it's just... cringe... Yes, DA:O is flawed and has many fantasy tropes but in a good way. It sometimes forces the player to make questionable decisions and the world building and the overall dark undertone in the game makes me come back to play it again and again - and so does DA 2, which imho is even 'darker' than DA:O. DA:I is not a bad fantasy game per se, but imho it's a very bad Dragon Age game.

    I've been hearing alot of reviewers recently in the past few years always bringing up how the game events are always waiting for you even if you run off and complete tens of hours of side quest before continuing the main quest... Why is this even a thing to complain about? Literally all games are like this it has always been a thing it's a damn video game not real life of course npc's are gonna wait around for the player, like the fact you can spend hundreds of hours driving around Los Santos before picking back up the main story is the player's choice but you don't see anyone complaining about that it's strange to even bring something like that up as a complaint, I'm just curious cause it seems like a recent trend reviewers have been prattling on about very strange.

      Just because its a norm doesnt make it ok. Its like someone complaining about fast travel in Skyrim, saying that quests force you into using it because they make you travel over the world to do something mundane. Its in all games by this point, but it doesnt make it ok, because a game that wants you to explore the world and ride horses shouldnt be balancing all its content around players with less patience and wanting the easy way out. Not that games should shy away from it as it is ok, but when everyone is doing it without any thought and simply putting it in the game becuase we have come to accept it, people forget what its like to not have it, and games as a whole has seen the effects with open world "huge map" games have barely anything amazing to discover because they have to cater to the Fast Travel users.
      Same applies to open world games with quests waiting for you. This is a norm, its in practically all games, but should the world and its problems revolve around you ALL the time? Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time didnt and it gave this feeling of agency that you had an important job to do or there would be consequences as the world carried on without you. But common gamers have forgotten what its like to be in a universe that YOU were born in. Instead, they only know what it feels like to have a universe that REVOLVES around YOU. Becuase if this, games like Skyrim or other rpgs have this feeling of "who care about this quest"
