    The quite part in a wave shaper is actually the middle. To the right is the top part and the left is the bottom part of the wave. That's why the values are -1 to 1. And also use the shaper table on poly mode it's crazy

      Middle depends on whether symmetry mode is enabled or not.

      Horizontal axis represents magnitude of an input sample.
      Vertical axis represents the output magnitude of the transformed sample.

      @steamer2k319 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When symmetry mode is enabled, the quiet part is the left (input) and the bottom (output).
      In asymmetric mode, you can control positive and negative deflection independently. The quiet part is in the center. The left/bottom is negative. The right/top is positive.

      @@steamer2k319 yes, but in the kilohearts plugin it is always shown as the middle, if you activate symmetry its still the same just the actions on one side gets symmetrical mirrored (also has a direct mirror). So sometimes depends on the GUI.

    13:00 you're perception is wrong, you might be confusing this with a saturation/compression threshold curve.
    What the khs shaper is doing is a remap of the samles. So if you take your original signal (e.g. a sine) it oscillates from -1 to +1 (bipolar signal) now we take a linear shaper curve like at 13:00. This would be just linear gain as x=y. Now at any point in time, the samples of the original signal (sine) are gonna be remapped by x=y, which means no saturation.
    Now let's go make a square wave.
    So for x ≤ 0, y = -1
    and for x ≥ 0 , y = 1.
    This means that for any point in time the signal goes below 0 it it will output -1 and when it goes above 0 it will output 1. That makes it a hardclipper that's pushed to the max. Essentially a comparator in electronic terms.
    So to clarify,
    x ≤ 0 (left side) will only affect the negative cycle of the source
    x ≥ 0 (right side) will only affect the positive cycle of the source.
    I think this one might even make more sense to you:
    Think of your signal as a modulation source and the shaper as a modulation remap. I bet you've used that in some of your patches, Vital has that feature built into the mod matrix. That's essentially what a waveshaper is doing. It's all just signal, doesn't matter if it's an LFO, an oscillator or even some communication pulses in the MHz & GHz.
    Hope this helps :)

    • @intevolver
      @intevolver 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For non-maths: experimenting with a waveshaper and watching it through a single cycle oscilloscope like MOcilloscope was the fastest way for me to come to grips with what's happening. In particular understanding the zero-crossing and comparing it to bias in more traditional distortion, rectification, asym vs symmetric etc. all of which impact harmonics and even fundamental pitch. E.G: rectifying a sine doesn't just introduce harmonics, it doubles the frequency at which that the amplitude reaches +1, which raises the fundamental an octave (no wonder it sounds "fatter" lol)

    • @leo.nordmann
      @leo.nordmann 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@intevolverI wouldn't call it math, it's just simple numbers. Yea cool example with the rectified waveform. When I see a rectified sine I just wanna put a cap in parallel so I can get some nice flat DC haha.

    there are two things from serum i miss in phaseplant. i cant get FM to sound the same as it does in serum, and that random phase starting point which is on by default in serum, i cant get the same effect in phase plant. using a randomizer lfo on the oscillator phase doesnt do the same thing since its always moving instead of being static with a random starting point like in serum. while im at it, i haven't been able to create anything sounding like the actual OTT within phaseplant, multipass, or snapheap. i feel like the compressors and the limiter could use some work to sound better, especially the limiter. The update which changed the lfos has been an inconvenience to me with their new default settings being the least useful settings to me. wish i could make new defaults settings for them. and for what ever reason, when running multipass as a vst fx outside of phaseplant, its LFOs doesnt quite sync with the daw playback like its not being latency compensated correctly. Oh yeah another thing i like from serum is how you create wavetables in a more intuitie way as well as undo changes to the wavetable which you cant in phaseplan where you instead have to start over from scratch if you're not happy with a change made. So while phaseplant is awesome as it is still, there are a number of improvements it could have. does it even oversample like serum? even studio ones stock synth (which i don't use btw) has oversampling.

    • @leo.nordmann
      @leo.nordmann 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Phase Plant you have two settings for the phase on the oscillator. Looks something like:
      Phase
      0º ±0º
      The left setting is for manual phase adjustment and will be the same for every trigger of the note. The right one is your phase randomness on note trigger.

      FM in Serum sounds different because it's unipolar (which is the wrong FM behavior btw)
      And yes, Phase Plant oscillators are oversampled. A saw wave near the Nyquist frequency doesn't generate aliasing (unless you use non-linear snapins afterwards, like Distortion)

      I think it’s totally okay to like stuff that I don’t and sometimes it might be the right choice for what you’re after. I guess for me I try to avoid buying tools that does like, one thing really well and go for something that can solve as many problems as possible. Even the analog heat earned a spot on my table for how versatile it became

    • @NeuroPete
      @NeuroPete 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Alckemy Thanks very much for your response. I am totally ok with someone not liking what I like, especially when it is someone I respect. Also, many others had a negative reaction to Trash 3, mainly due to a lack of sound design features present in Trash 2.
      There are myriad plugin whose only purpose is to mangle sound in pleasing ways, and I have several. I haven't done much with Kilohearts yet, but I can see the value of learning to "roll your own" rather than weeding thru countless presets and samples to get what you want.
      I don't think I will ever be into sound design or music production enough to value hardware effects gear like the Elektron Analog Heat, but I admire those who rock that stuff.

      As a sound designer I value variety because that’s something that helps separate our own unique sound, but also make presets that will stand out. With trash, if every preset sounds relatively similar it would difficult for me to bring value out of my work.
