    that -9 snare sweetspot trick will set the stage for the whole dynamic. great tip.

    An interesting workflow me and a friend found involves using Bitwig with modulators to randomize generation of drum sounds. You then use a program called Sononym to sort the sounds based on spectral content, using a sample sound that is really polished and what you're after. You sort a list of several thousand generated samples based on their similarity to that one, and throw away the excess. You get 50 - 60 drums in about 5 minutes, if you include the time in Reaper spent splitting the master recorded file into individual hits.

    One of my favourite features in XO is how you can search/filter sounds based on specific parameters and then auto replace your former sounds with the closest thing based on those search parameters.
    So if you manage to narrow it down to something very specific and unusual for drum sounds, you can get a really unique sounding groove really fast.
    I don't use that technique very often at all, but I LOVE how I can do that if I want to.
    Like you said, cheat codes. It's about speed and convince, not a necessity tho for sure.

      That's the main thing that has me interested. I saw people doing that in other videos and I realised that it's a workflow that suits me 100% because drums and beats are my weak suit so I struggle, and I also like using unusual sounds - this is a win-win!

    Cool video! One feature I am constantly using in XO is the envelope combined with the softclipper. The envelope acts like a transient shaper so I can make the attack poke out more then drive that into the soft clipper to make hit hard. I have not found that feature set as easily accessible in other drum machine plugins.
    Also side note: I found the Bitwig's gate can make some pretty cool percs out of almost any break by filtering out the sidechain signal. It makes the gate react a lot faster when its not reacting to the kick fundamental.

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can also set it to beats mode! I think you have more control with the gate though

    Ayy that last one was my favorite reminds me of bricksquash haha I agree XO is the best I might even call it a must have. Didn’t know about those fancy features with xo where you drag out a wav and or midi. Addictive drums looks interesting but one plugin I think you might like is drumcomputer by sugarbytes, it’s a drum synth and also pretty sick, Thanks for the vid!

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching! I’m a big fan of halftime so swingy beats are something I’ve probably become the most proficient at. I’ve seen data broth use drum computer quite a bit but I’m not sure if it would replace phaseplant for making drums

    XO is really nice, its good as brewer as well, but there is not modulation options for finer details, it could be nice to have these like Geist had

  • @macronencer

    I'm going to have to try this before I buy because I can't find anywhere the answer to my main question: how does it handle sequences that are NOT 16 beats? I know the swing function allows things like 7 time, but it's not clear to me exactly how that's handled in terms of the DAW having, say, bars of 7/8...

      @macronencer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CAMMYSINCLAIR Interesting! I happened to be looking at Geist2 yesterday, but I think it might be over the top for me. I'm less of a beat maker and more an experimentalist. I've also found Atlas now, which looks promising and allows polymeters (different step counts for each instrument) so that looks like it will do what I need.

    What do you think of Mr bills new plug in called Slap I've been on the bench about buying it. It's similar to Knock but has a cool transient replacement tool

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that If I didn't know how to make my own drums already it would be a handy plugin. There are other ways to manipulate a sample to get a click but it doesn't work for me as I have a particular taste in drums. I think Mr. bill is a genius and his plugin caters to very clean drums if that's what you're after

    XO is a clone of the OG Algonaut Atlas. Strange how you didn't compare it with that as this is the closes comparison. Anyway Atlas is better, you can create an entire new drum set with 1 click, has a sequencer with mirror editing and randomization features, and can use much more drum samples at a time. There is nothing revolutionary about XO.

    • @Alckemy
      @Alckemy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check the description, i mentioned that I didn’t talk about it in this video. I did compare the two before I chose xo. They both are very similar, Altus is cheaper- I just prefer the xln version
