One notable omission from this list is codename Neptune (build 5111), which can't upgrade from anything.

Nice, we can download most of the builds from your repository without having to search for every Windows Build
I watched this video in its entirety at 0.25 speed and was amazed at how much Windows has changed since 1985 and the perseverance you have when a build fails. You were able to find a solution for almost every problem that came through including the installation of Longhorn 3718 and Windows 10 10051. Had I been doing a project like this, I probably would have given up once the first problem occurred, and I have. I wish you hadn't unlisted the video because more people need to see this. Over 202 hours of doing this must have been tiring but I thank you. I was truly entertained by this. This takes the Windows Upgrade Chain to a new level.

I think I'd watch "the making of" video. Was this done in a single VM? What (virtual) hardware supports this upgrade path?
Well, I started this project on 86box. I made a 4GB hard drive and installed everything in it until Windows 98. Then, I converted the HDD into a vmdk and started using VMware Workstation. When I was installing Whistler, I also expanded the disk to 120GB, but, in Longhorn 4001, the disk got corrupted so bad that the only way of fixing it was formatting the drive (which kinda defeated the purpose of my project). So, I made another 80GB flat drive, and moved everything into it. After this, it was a pretty smooth sailing, apart from the issues that the builds would have caused (due to their unstable nature). I hope this answers all your questions! If not, feel free to ask anything that you want.

I wonder if it would be possible to fully automate this upgrade process, at least retail versions only. Here is an theory on how this could work. All Windows versions would be located on a second hard drive (D for example) and each version would be modified in a way that when it gets to the desktop it would start the setup of the next version with an unattended file and so on until it would get to Windows 10.
I actually tried doing this thing, and the closest thing at achieving it was to put a shortcut on the desktop with setup.exe /unattend, and I would just click on it and it would do the rest by itself...

i should back up my files, problem is that i don't have enough data storage for 200GB of data, only a broken 5tb sata harddrive, and 2 ata hard drives (i don't have ata to usb, only sata to usb), each storing 80 gb, so my desktop would barely fit in both hard drives combined
When you use the same computer for 36 years and update it after every single release.
You can’t do that cuz it needs system requirements.
And you can’t install it on modern hardware.
I did this also 7 times and got it to windows 8.1 because I was limited in august 2023 and it’s October and now I’m installing windows 1.01 to windows 8.1

tried to install chicago on a win 3.0 machine i even ran the dos setup i also changed the time its always the same error the hard disk is fully used
I tried this but I cant install Windows XP build 2410. I get a BSOD with 0x0000000a(0x00000000, 0x0000001c, 0x00000000, 0x80129627) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL when the GUI Setup starts.

To extract the files from a .msi file (like the one used in VMware tools), use the command msiexec /a drive:\filepath\to\MSI\file /qb TARGETDIR=drive:\filepath\to\target\folder (in command prompt)

Most of them can be found on winworldpc.com. However, I downloaded most of my builds from the BetaArchive FTP. If you could get access to it, you have basically found the Holy Grail of abandonware and beta software.

Well, you'd have to submit a piece of beta/abandonware software to their website, and if they don't have it, you get approved. It's a bit more tricky than that, unfortunately, but you can find all the details on their website...
