  • These drills are designed to help you pop on on foil in flat water. The same technique can be used for catching waves and popping up for downwind runs. I'm using a 6'1"x 23" x 105L Kalama Performance Board with a Go Foil 280 front wing, Go Foil 14" fixed tail wing on a 26.5" mast. I weigh 160lbs / 72kg

      Hi Jeremy!
      I binge on your vids trying to learn every thing I can but have only plaining boards. I'm attempting to purchase a displacement D-W-SUP-FOIL board, but they are not available. (Yet)
      D.Kalama asked me in a response, if I wanted him to build me a custom board.
      I said yes, but don't know what he or you would recomend. I haven't heard back for a few days. (Must be good swell over there!!! Haha!)
      I need some help deciding what DwnWnd-BOARD to purchase for my weight and would like your opinion.
      I see you occasionally ride a custom Kalama Barracuda perhaps. (?)
      I'm 185-190Lbs 65 years old and am 1 year into foiling on Armstrong equipment. In San Diego mostly light winds but see occasional swell here on west coast and would like to prepare or train for DW SUP foiling.
      What board would you recommend for a heavier man than you. I see the E3 6'-1" 23"W that you demonstrated.
      Would the next size up be better or not? In your opinion. (If I could get my paws on one!)
      Q#2 would a custom board be a better option from Kalama, do you have a favorite Down wind board from Kalama that you love and recomend.
      Sorry for leaning on you like this but you are IMO among the top knowlege and experience in this realm and I would be a fool to not ask.
      Ride Well & Aloha!

    Hello again Jeremy
    This video is a real gem!
    I think I have watched it more than 50 times and I am still coming back to it. I got a KT Ginxu 105L a month ago and have been out 5-6 times practicing . I don’t have the explosive power to get up yet but have been focusing on the back leg/knee action to feel the pop and definitely making progress. I am 145 lbs and using the 1150 Axis front wing and also tried my friend’s 1310 Axis front wing but actually prefer felt better with the 1150. Should I just stick to the 1150 or still consider bigger front wings like the GT2600? And I am still not entirely sure what you meant by the paddle stroke being twice as fast as recovery 🙏

    Hi Jeremy, thanks for sharing your knowledge and stoke!! I've been SUPing for over 13 years in surf and downwind and I probably have always used a paddle much too long. Now that I'm trying to get the hang of SUP foiling, I've shortened my paddle a few inches but trying to figure out how you pros determine your paddle length. What is your advice on paddle size and length for better SUP foiling? Maybe you could tell us where your in relation to your height? thanks again for sharing...I never miss a video!!

    • @PaddleWithRiggs
      @PaddleWithRiggs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I prefer my paddle to be 4” above my head. Some guys go shorter and some go longer. I feel like I get a nice catch at the length I’m using and if I go shorter I have to squat lower to get that same catch.

    These are fantastic tutorials. My kit Go Foil 80 cm mast, FTL 14.5 and RS 1150.
    Kalama E3 5'6, 112L. I weight 150 lbs. Proficient in Winging, SUP surfing and just getting immersed in SUP foiling.
    What is the optimal mast position on the Kalama board? More forward or back. Not getting the lift. Probably, a combination of my technique.

    • @PaddleWithRiggs

      I find it easier to get lifted in flat water with the mast forward but that’s a small wing for flat water. For downwind I prefer the mast to be in the middle of the box

    Thanks for taking the time to share this, it helps me see that it's possible with the correct technique. I have 28' mast and 32 and have heard the shorter the better for practice as it helps you get up quick and has less drage, woudl you agree with this? .

    Hi Jeremy! Great video! I gave it the first try yesterday, - no chance 😅. I suppose the gear plays a big role? My board is wider and shorter than yours, I guess that doesn't help but anyways too early to give up! 😂
    Maybe you could help me with the following two questions: I am using my foils from dockpumping and have a slower/more stable serup and a faster/less stable serup: Which one do you recommend? 2. After trying out what difference it makes to locate is in the back/center/front of the rail tracks, disn't really come to any conclusion.. Maybe difficult to give advice in terms of that since many parameters play into finding the perfect position of the foil.. but could you figure out what the differences are if putting the foil more in front or back on YOUR setup?

    • @PaddleWithRiggs
      @PaddleWithRiggs  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes the board makes a huge difference. Long and skinny is much easier. I’ve found it easier to pop up on most foils when the are all the way forward in the box. The slower, bigger foil with greater low end lift is the way to go

      @@PaddleWithRiggs Ah cool. That's actually slightly longer than what I've been hearing other guys using. All I've heard so far is anywhere from head-high to an inch under your height. I might try to get a hold of an adjustable paddle before I go cut my nice Kialoa... But I think that if I go from my current 6" over my head to 3", I'll like it regardless... it's not that huge of a difference as going head-high.

    Greetings! I am 41 years old, weight 85 kg, height 174 cm.. I have 3 years of experience with a paddle and wine, but no experience with hydrofoil. I want to do downwind on the river with a paddle in flat and downwind especially. I'm afraid to make a choice, I'm especially worried about the width of the board, so that it won't be too difficult if it's narrow for me. Therefore, I am not considering the 8'×19' 5 option yet, is it really so difficult for a beginner to stand on a long and narrow board?
    And therefore it is worth choosing on
    Kalama E3 6'5×23'5' 116 liters. Will this be enough for a beginner's stability?
    Or there is a Kalama 6'5×27'5 , 130 liters.?
    What is your opinion? The main goal is downwind on the river.

    • @PaddleWithRiggs
      @PaddleWithRiggs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi @wingfoil,
      I recommend going longer and narrower. It’s so much easier to learn on a longer board. The 8’ x 21.5” x 111 liters Kalama Barracuda or something similar should work well for you. It might take some practice to get used to balancing but if you use a big foil it will add a lot of stability. Ideally you might want something closer to 115-120 liters for your weight while you learn. Just avoid boards with a round bottom. Round bottom hulls are not beginner friendly.
