    Its funny he talks about being the best out of your friend group and getting smashed at a local. My first tournament was in melee(wasnt exactly 'a local', but the place was like 5 minutes from my house), and it was a fairly large pot, I think first place was like 2,500. Well, I faced mewtwo king in the second round. I had never heard of him or anything, so I figured he was probably close to the average across the US, so I never went to another tournament again.

As someone who speaks French and quite a bit of Spanish, I do agree that English is easier, but there are still some intricacies. Like when trying to find a correct past tense to use, it can be tricky to know when to use (with to make as the example):
      I made
      I was making
      I had made
      I had been making
      I have made
      I have been making
      The last two are present tenses, but for someone learning the language that could be very tricky

    The bright side about learning english though is that you can be really really incorrect and still be easily understood. Some other languages don't have that benefit. Like, broken english is probably understood better than any other broken language. That makes it easier to engage with stuff and practice. We also have spaces and only 26 letters so it's pretty easy to look up any english word compared to something like japanese with it's kanji.

    that’s why there are like 10 different sets of “rules”

  • @acetrainerlanon
    @acetrainerlanon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    10:30. Ooh! I like overthinking things! So the question is "why do we say 'isn't there' rather than 'isn't it'?"
    TL;DR
    "There" is more appropriate to use when making statements or asking questions about something's existence while "it" is more appropriate for specific, pre-established nouns. This is based on tradition of the English language.
    The Full Breakdown:
    Here's the phrase again for reference:
    "...there is always room for improvement isn't it?"
    This phrase features 2 independent clauses:
    "there is always room for improvement" and
    "isn't it?"
    The word "it" is a pronoun that serves as a placeholder for some other noun that would be appropriate to put in its place. Generally, pronouns are useful for avoiding repetition. The noun that "it" is substituting here is supposed to be implied from previous context. So now I ask: what is "it" replacing in the sentence?
    As mentioned, pronouns take the place of a previously established noun. So now let's ask: what nouns can be gleamed from the previous clause that could be carried over to the next clause as the implied subject? For simplicity, I will rely on the understanding that a noun is a "person, place, or thing" and I will be using "noun" instead of repeatedly writing "noun/noun phrase". The first clause contains the following words that can be considered nouns: "room", and "improvement". So I present 2 ways to interpret what "it" is substituting:
    "...there is always room for improvement isn't room?"
    "...there is always room for improvement isn't improvement?"
    Now, you may have noticed that I didn't include "there" as a possible substitute for "it". One could very easily interpret "there" as the subject of the first clause and should then be a viable substitution. The rather humorous twist is: "there" is also being used as a pronoun.
    To back up a bit, I'd like to ask: what does the first clause accomplish in the phrase? I'd answer that the first phrase is a declarative sentence. Specifically, I'd say that the clause makes an existential declaration. The first clause speaks to the existence of "room for improvement". This means that "there" is being used as a substitute for a noun phrase like "in existence".
    What this means for why "there" can't be substituted for "it" is that "there" is already a placeholder itself. To use a placeholder("it") to replace a placeholder("there") would be redundant.
    This opens up another question: what is the purpose of the second clause? Why ask "isn't it?"/"isn't there?" at the end of the phrase at all? Typically, this question is used to see if the listener that the speaker is speaking to is in agreement with a previously made claim or assertion. The speaker is probing the listener for a contradiction to their claim to ensure that both parties agree with what was just said.
    So, with this in mind, the respective phrases (after substituting in for "it") could be asking:
    "Do you think what I just said is not room?"
    "Do you think what I just said is not improvement?"
    This presents a problem. The use of "it' narrows the scope of the phrase too narrowly. There is not enough evidence from the context provided which interpretation is the correct understanding of the original phrase. Additionally, both phrases leave out the "always" adverb from the original phrase, which may have been the part of the first clause the speaker wanted to check for contradictions for.
    This probably of ambiguity is solved by making the second clause "isn't there?". The use of "there" has already been established in the first phrase to mean something to the effect of "in existence". So when the speaker is probing for a contradiction, the second phrase may now be read as:
    "Do you think what I just said is not in existence?"
    This opens up every part of the first clause to be scrutinized and disputed by the listener as any disagreement with the first clause violates the existence the speaker was asking about.
    The next question would likely be "why can't 'it' mean 'in existence' as well?" To which, I'd say it's because "there" already means that, so to have two pronouns representing the same entity would be redundant.
    Which THEN begs the question; "if the first clause used 'it' instead of 'there', would the original phrase's second clause be correct since 'it' now bears the implied meaning of 'in existence'?" I would say that this is a fair assessment, and I think that "...it is always room for improvement isn't it?" would be technically correct. However, there is a fairly heavy tradition of using "there" as the "existential pronoun" over "it", so that phrasing would still sound really weird to most English speakers.
    Anyway, this went way longer than I expect. Hope you have an amazing day!

    I do hope this does not sound mean but, english is a pretty easy language. In german for example every word has ine aligned gender that changes multiple words in the sentence. That is not that hard to figure out, the problem is that there is not a single rule explaining which word is alinged with wich gender so you just need to learn it by hard. Altough the weirdest part imo is how different it sounds compared to so many other languages, but thats just my humble opinion and i migth be wrong idk
    Love from Germany btw

    • @airhead3409
      @airhead3409 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, instead in English you have to learn how to pronounce each word which as he explained can be a rough guessing game. German is at least quite phonetic in its spelling - that is most words are pronounced the way they are written (the "sch" and "Ch" and "ie" aside).
      Moreover, since you have to learn the vocabulary of a language anyway, learning the gender isn't that much extra work. Especially if you have a few rule of thumbs that make the guessing easier, like for example that most nouns that end on an "e" are female.
      In the end, every language has its quirks and difficulties that need to be learned :)
      Have a good day.

    As someone who can get Little Mac in elite, but has no chance of getting any other character there, yeah, I just armour through everything and know some of the basic combos and mechanics and furiously spam smash attacks until I win.

    I'm a noob with Ultimate, but as a Jigglypuff main, 2 mil kind of makes sense. Good movement with Jigglypuff requires timing mid-air jumps with the latency, and I have been punished so many times for my jump being delayed. Now repeat for each time you jump mid-air with Puff. :^) I'mma probably just cancel my online and go CPUs until I find hot Smash locals in my area.

    • @Jackaljkljkl
      @Jackaljkljkl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't play CPUs.
      I got to the point where I two-stocked or three-stocked Level 9's in every game, and then was stuck at the bottom-end of GSP.
      I had to rewire my entire muscle memory to undo the damage.
      Laggy play against humans is better practice than lagless play against bots. It's not even close.

    • @Jassifrickanation
      @Jassifrickanation 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jackaljkljkl I mean, I really doubt playing in a laggy, inconsistent environment is going to be unequivocally better. I'm not playing Smash Bros for GSP. I'm playing Smash Bros to have fun. Or at the very least, I'd like to play the game, with the online experience being me trying to meta-game and predict my own character more than the opponent.
      Edit: I also question how good it'll train me when my Little Mac is my best character.

      @@Jassifrickanation The part where you saId "until I find Smash.locals in my area" made me think the end goal was offline tournaments.
      With this in mind, learning to play humans takes priority.
      Level 9 CPUs are really strong against some attacks - which you will subconsciously start ignoring - that may work well against humans. Conversely, some options will fool the bot every time, but a human - even a beginner - will never fall for these cheese situations more than once, if at all.
      For example, Level 9 CPU will never DI out of Byleth Up-B, which means you get the Side-B follow-up every time.
      On the other hand, humans will almost always DI (high level players intentionally, and beginners through panic) and this combo/killconform will never work.

      @@Jackaljkljkl I just want to play the game and online puts me on full tilt the moment I'm juggling handfuls of inputs in a row that don't do anything I intend them to do. I have nobody local to play and I don't want to spend my time fully raging at the game itself. I barely even notice the other player I'm so busy dealing with Nintendo's ecosystem. That's all that needs to be said about online. So, again, my options are to rage, play CPUs, or not play at all.
      I'm not worried about being the best player. I just want to enjoy the game I've owned for years but haven't played because of how terrible the experience has been. And even then, big doubt I'll learn well playing online when the best player in the world loses more often online cuz doing dumb stuff is just flat out more rewarding online (hence hammering smash attacks online with Little Mac making him an S-tier character).
      I'm fully aware bots aren't realistic. They have reaction times that seem to be working before my move is even executing. They do dumb stuff like air dodge into the ground where I'm waiting to punish them hard. CPUs won't punish off stage when it could legit get them the win. It still beats going online and getting livid because "that's Smash Bros". Especially when I haven't played the game enough to even learn fundamental movements and that is HORRIBLE online. There is no proper movement online. It's just absolute garbage.
      I hate lag in all kinds of games. Even in emulators for retro games that people tell me they can work around (I cannot). So when I say that I'm going to find Smash locals, it's just to actually play and enjoy the game. You can take whatever you want from that but this whole conversation is like PTSD and reminding just how furious I've been with Nintendo's shit-ass approach on a game they released DLC to pander to their consumers and do better online (nice sword Sephiroth that feels twice as big online with a half second lag).
      I'm not ignorant to the problems. I just want to play this game again.
      Edit: Also talking about bad online habits, even some of the Underdogs talk about people deciding to roll instead of anything else. In my experience, rolling is way harder to punish online than a lot of other options. Like jumping. Jumping is super easy to punish cuz it doesn't have i-frames. Everything with i-frames is more ideal online because it's harder to time a punish. Armor, rolling, dodging, counter, etc. You'd get screwed over using them offline but online, makes them way better.
      Edited Again: Also, I know you might focus too much on that last paragraph so let me emphasize that my point is this game has major problems that can't be fixed by me making sure to spend money on their online ecosystem. It was intended mostly for kids cuz they're the main ones to tolerate the online and enjoy copious amounts of assist trophies and final smashes. And let me emphasize that my intent isn't to get good at the game playing CPUs, it's to actually have fun, hence the playing against locals and the fact you felt you had to point that out meant you're focusing on the wrong stuff.

Trust me if you played online over here in California you’d be like “why is everyone so sweaty?!” I feel like I have to play like it’s life or death just to maintain my 10mil gsp. And that’s mainly because over here it matches into Japan, Mexico and west coast US which are pretty much the 3 strongest regions. I think it has something to do with there just being so many players over here.
