- Producer, engineer, mixer and author Sylvia Massy (Prince, Tool, Johnny Cash, System of a Down) has carved something of a niche in the industry as a lover of 'adventure recording': that is, unusual techniques that go beyond the ordinary realms of music production.
In this video, Sylvia demonstrates an unusual use for a garden hose when recording a drum room.

Sylvia is fearless, genius and kind. An absolute legend.
Then you turn on the water for a real wet mix... use two for stereo. Next the Slip-N-Slide vocal booth!
Classic! 🙌🏻😜
I always have hoes at the studio
Caaaaan we get a sample sound? 🤣 I had my fingers crossed halfway through the video
This woman says that the hose is not very long but in my family we consider that is more than adequate size if not a great size.
It's above average for sure.. right?
@@randymccoy2527the longer the hose the more maintenance and care it needs, so a short hose is always a better choice
I love her, she is a fantastic innovator
Has been my secrect weapon since I saw this video. Thank you SOS and Sylvia ❤❤❤
Just Wow! That's just stunningly creative
Yeah??? You sure about that??? So where and in what way is the hose positioned? What orientation and what direction is the mic pointing? And now that the SM57 is taped to the hose .. how does one now connect the xlr signal cable?
If you cannot answer the above .. then what is the point to being so impressed?
I love the “another “great use for a hose. I bet Sylvia has another 10 brilliant ideas for it we hadn’t thought of.
Omg genius!! Love Sylvia Massey!!!!

Worked great! I've had many issues with cymbals being too intense in room mics.
Great to hear!
Where's the demo?!
There is a demo of her doing this technique on TH-cam. You’ll have to search for it.
@@thosemonsters How... inconvenient.
A demo would have made perfect sense after the explanation
I thought the same thing.
Just search for a demo.
Just listen to some records she's recorded
Yep... quite!
Can't believe how many comments are simply gobsmacked by this ... since was such an utterly inprecise explanation of anything.
@@gammakeraulophon wow.. the above is so easy to explain.
I'll work backwards, the xlr connects exactly where it always would. Look closely, she holds the hose to the capsule end, not the xlr end.. you and others are mistaking an sm58 for an sm57 so you're thinking there is a round end on the capsule side, wrong. If you look closely you can see the grill that is over the capsule, on the end that she holds to the hose.
As for positioning, as she said, the hose goes under the kit, likely as a coil.. the hose being a hollow rubber tube means its resonant, it will act as a sort of pick up, hence why she said it will mostly get the low and mid frequencies and massively reduce the cymbals. A little critical thinking makes that self explanatory.
Hope this helps. I'd honestly think this was all obvious from her explanation.
So grateful that she shares her techniques!

This woman is my engineering heroine. So inspiring.
Sylvia is number one!
Awesome tip
Such imagination! 🎧💚
Amazing idea , thanks for sharing
I gotta hear this!!
That’s sick. What a cool person
Genius! I'll have to try this
Nice tip, will try!
Genius. Tool's Undertow is a brilliant album.
Brilliant.
😮 interesting
One of my mentors
It would have been better to include an audio sample of a track recorded with one of these garden hoses.
Very interesting 🎉
Awesome
Only interesting if theres a demo.
I love hose
Cool
Love me some hose
Love me them hose
That’s keepin ya hose in check!
Nice
I love clever would love to hear what the sound is from that hose
Man, this started and ended so well.
Damn that's cool
oh! I'm gonna do that rn
…..said every pimp ever😂😂😂😂😂
I use Jose all the time.
A master of all trades
Crazy
So...do you plug the mic in?
Asking for a friend! 😂
probably makes interesting field recordings too
I like using hose too 😉😁😅
Does she put the mic facing inside towards the taped up end? If not, then you might as well put the mic on the floor or inside a tissue box on it's side.
So where does the mic cable go ?
What a badass.
I wonder if she uses technique on the Tool album she produced.
Have you take your microphone and place it inside a sock, the sock has to be made of 100% cotton with 20% polyester and 2% nondisclosed materials.
And if you drape that upsidedown hanging off the bottom of a bucket with the tips, just dangling over the lip of the bucket and cover that bucket with tinfoil and put that out when it’s just starting to rain ….
It’s like listening to the heavens open up, and you can hear angels walking about !
how many foot of hose?
how?
I loved the audio demo! It was incredible, never head anything like it!
Sounds genius though
🔥❤🌟
I always have a handy hose with me.😂🤔🤫
interesant
Always have some extra hose in the studio, don't mix up "e" and the "o" in hose
It is so rare i see a woman know things about production or recording. Thats modestly attractive. Anywho thanks for the room technique
🤯
was watchin vids on pimpn den dis came up
Needs a visual demo plz. This makes no sense, where's the space under the drum kit if the kit is on the floor. Why is a hose necessaryb? If the other end is taped up how do you connect an XLR ?
I wanna hear how it sounds.
I got hose...in different area codes.
Ask Ludachris about that
theres a hose in this house
What!?!?!? 😮
Speaking about the sound is like dancing about architecture. Can you please let us hear the sound it makes?
Trust me bro
No, O's for the gate, mon repose, letter O's.
I put a speaker upside down to the floor my drum room sound
Hose filter
Who can attest to this experiment 🧐
She's definitely trolling
Her eyes are red as the sun . Just lit ..
Would love to jam with her ..
Cheers 🎉.
Seems a little bit odd. Attaching a hose to the rear of the body of an sm57 will do nothing. I think she likely heard of this trick, and misunderstood that only the capsule would be loaded in the end of the hose. But regardless, I think some engineers were having some fun at her expense.
She put the capsule on, look again. Also, do you even realise the records she's worked on? She's legendary. You should pay more attention, and maybe do your research. She's one of the greatest engineer/producers to ever be.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Massy
@@1337murkUm,maybe you should look again. She most certainly aims the business end of the complete SM57 straight into the hose in the video.
@@ROCKNROLLMODS My dude, she's putting the capsule on the hose.
@@1337murk She has the Mike body in her hand and is pointing the microphone into the hose
@murk1337 Even better yet she gives you no indication of what you are supposed To Do with it after that.
This is bogus information
hose lol
Gotta love a gal who likes a handy hose
I don't get it. Can't you just EQ?
I guess the advantage of hose Vs overhead + EQ is that you're further from the cymbals and closer to the skins.
Yeah hose it sound tho?? 😂
Decades old. Works well
All that and no example?🙄
Konda pointless tp not show us what that sounds like though
She’s like the Martha Stewart of drums ?
Great idea not to show us what it sounds like. Just show us a hose.
This is an edit. There is a full, video,of her demonstrating the technique on TH-cam. Just search for it.
No example: 👎🏼
Waste of time. Who removes the gooey glue from the 57? Your intern probabaly
You do know that gaff tape exists right? Right?!
Double time lady wtf. Not got all day.
You make time for Massy, she's class
@@ChristopherWoods okay
What she talking about
I feel like I Need a hose acar some tape and a garage after I watched yhis
All these years I’ve been drumming my ho’s the wrong way….. 😂
I feel depressed 😞
