An album released last year that I enjoyed a lot was "Abandon All Hope" by Ethan P. Flynn. It's a really nice album based mostly around acoustic guitar but with lots of extra instrumentation. It might be that I really enjoy long songs, but the track "Crude Oil" was probably one of my favorite songs of the year. The title track has some spectacular horns and textures, too, which really caught me when I first listened to it as a single. Ethan P. Flynn has a nice discography too, with his previous release "Universal Deluge" having some amazing tracks on it.
I usually don’t listen to albums the year the drop, but Scaring the Hoes was phenomenal. It was frequently in rotation along with the estate sale by Tyler.
Knower Forever is really a culmination of so many amazing talents. Louis Cole's composition and production skills are outstanding as always, his unique mixes and catchy melodies really set this album apart from it's contemporaries. Every song has an interesting mix of people Cole has worked with for a while, and you can feel the chemistry oozing from every performance. Sam Gendel's sax is great on every track he's on, both bass players on this album, MonoNeon and Sam Wilkes, each have their own unique style that adds some variety between tracks, and the orchestra and choir parts feel like a strong floor for everything else to stand on. It really feels like a true evolution of Louis Cole's past works.
ive seen a few people talk about how good 93696 by liturgy has been this year, but i think most people probably missed it. My favorite album of this year full-stop over scaring the hoes and playing robots into heaven. so crushing and epic. Def worth at least one listen.

Temporary Forever - Busdriver (Absolutely wild experimental hip-hop/rap album, off the wall lyrics, he literally freestyles at a hardees halfway through the album, got me through many tough times, awesome album) 2. California - Mr Bungle (Expirimental Rock at it's finest, I love it so much, Mike Patton has the weirdest voice in the best way) 3. Choirs of The Eye - Kayo Dot (Avante Garde Metal my beloved, The Manifold Curiosity may as well be the best song on earth) 4. ...Because I'm Young Arrogant and Hate Everything You Stand For - Machine Girl (Just awesome, I love digital hardcore, and I fucking hate Elon Musk) 5. Hellfire - Black Midi (Post-Punk Jazz Rock with a instrumentals that only sound like they could be performed by a human with 6 hands, just awesome)

This gives me so much new music to explore. It was a pleasure to listen to as always. Also, after hearing about it on SDP, I honestly enjoyed ‘Gaburger’ despite some controversy about the artist.
I listened to a lot of older albums this year. Little Simz's 'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert', The Avalanches 'Since I Left You', and the entire Guilty Gear Strive soundtrack to name a few. I also got into the Mashpit with creators like LibraH, LK Corvus, himynameisshan, Ferrolad, david0mario, DaymanOurSavior, and pluffaduff. Not a lot of exciting stuff this year, but whatever I could find banged. (also Rumbakana lyrics when?)
hearing both of your #1 albums literally made me jump out of my seat. Both of those albums are in my top 5, along with Model/Actriz's Dogsbody, King Krule's Space Heavy, and Jane Remover's Census Designated! Loved listening to this while doing physics hw at 1AM ^_^

one of my favorite artists last year is called takayan!! they didnt release an album but they released A LOT of singles. My favorite was "Love doesn't have rules" they discuss a lot of relatable themes like mental heath, identity, etc- but i mostly like it cuz it's a lot of fun to listen to!

Honestly last year has been my favorite year for music ever since getting really into music With two 10/10 albums, ants from up there & hellfire coming out that same year. So this year felt a bit stale in comparison but it still had some great highlights for me My top 5 projects of 2023 are: 1. 3D country - Geese 2. Scaring the hoes - JPEGmafia & Danny Brown 3. Dogsbody - Model/Actriz 4. 93639 - Liturgy 5. HAGEUKO - Hage-o With the number 5 spot being an EP I probably revised the most Being a lesser known math pop/ post hardcore band coming from Poland I didn’t understand a word that was being said on this project. Which I don’t think is needed as all my enjoyment for this project is a product of the catchy melodies, great riffs, chaotic and ever changing song structures and a super passionate & weird singer. Even tho not my favorite project of this year it had me the most impressed and I really look forward to what they’re going to do next.

Very nice lists both of you. My top album this year was Grave Robbing by leroy/Jane Remover. That entire album is a Mashup album that goes beyond Mashups. Though I do also want to talk about Carousel, because Vylet Pony is so underrated and her music is actually incredible.

i know this is an older episode but i want to post my top 5 so bad… listening to this podcast makes me realize i’m not as big of a music nerd as i thought and i just have loser taste LMAO intellectual property - waterparks, my fav band ever idc i thought this was fantastic and SO fun!! back to the water below - royal blood, i think this is their best record yet, seeing waves live changed my life so much (for) stardust - fall out boy, i will never grow out of my middle school taste… their best album in years and years though and an INSANE concert good lord…… it’s never fair, always true - JAWNY, by far my favorite pop record i listened to in 2023 it’s absolutely amazing, he is criminally underrated!!! zig - poppy, she is my favorite solo artist and i thought this was such a fun record, it’s incredible how versatile she is and how well she pulls it off!!
I re-listened to Painkiller's "Guts of a Virgin" Album recently. I listened to it a really long time ago, but I totally forgot how it went. I have to say, it makes for an insane workout! Tracks can be really short (A few seconds) to a couple minutes, but the mix of Mick Harris' Machine-gun drumming, Bill Laswell's 6-string Bass, and John Zorn's Saxophone squeals and screams, it KILLS!
this year was so stacked for me so much so i could hardly even pick a top 5, with rock albums like Dogsbody, The Lamb as Effigy, After the magic/night, Census designated and hip hop albums like Scaring the hoes, Maps, We buy diabetic test strips, i couldnt find an easy AOTY for me. If there was a gun to my head i'd probably say The Lamb as Effigy but every other one i mentioned also got played the FUCK out of me. TLAE managed to hit me with the "swans"esque post rock/experimental rock sound i never got into through swans, at first i just loved the way they shape noise in the album, it feels actually *searing* - something i havent heard in an album since Schlagenheim (in my top 3 favourite albums OAT). The best way i can describe it is if you mixed the noise rock of Black midi, post rock of Swans, and vocal style of BCNR's Isaac wood, with some added american poetic twang. It can be exciting and it can be downtempo and calm and it can be poetic or harrowing. Its just such a good display of ART in a noise rock way. I have a very limited vynil collection but after my second listen i immediately bought it cuz it was so good. on the episode: really appreciate seeing the bl4ck m4rket c4rt shoutout, the album was so peaceful yet so mournful at the same time. Maps is actually Billy woods (a conscious/abstract hip hop veteran) and Kenny segal's 2nd collab album, their first one - Hiding places (2019) is also amazing though the production is more post punky/abstract rather than jazzy. Armand hammer (a rap duo Billy woods is in) also dropped Haram (2021) with production from the alchemist, yall should check it out if you like the jazzyness of Maps. Overall Billy woods has a HUGE and AMAZING discog ngl.

Sorry for this essay of a comment but I like yapping about music so here I go. If I’m being completely honest, even tho I love music, I hadn’t really focused on any music let alone new music because I had been busy with uni. But the 2 albums that really stuck out to me that I did get to catch when they released was NCT127’s album called Ay-yo and Kim Dracula’s debut album A Gradual Decline in Morale. NCT127 kpop and Kim Dracula is an alternative trap artist. My two main genres are Kpop and Rock so that’s my range. If kpop isn’t your thing I get it, tbh they came out with that album so early in 2023 that I forgot but I recommend those who are interested in Kpop. And if you’re into noise music NCT127 (NCT in general really) is the Kpop group for you! I totally recommend Kim Dracula’s music. He was the guy that made the emo version of paparazzi and it went viral on TikTok in like 2022 and they make their own music. I actually checked out his music as a joke but I genuinely liked their music. When this album came out I was taken aback because Kim Drac is the type of artist to mix in different genres (check out Make Me Famous and Land of the Sun) and this album strings together like every track flows seamless (hopefully that made sense). I reallllly recommend this album and Johnathan Davis from Korn has a feature in one of the track and I love it so much!! Kim Dracula became my top artist for 2023 which is crazy because I discovered his music as a joke at first.
i love george clanton. absolutely one of my top artists i recommend people see live. the visuals, his singing, the instrumentals, the crowd, everything. love that guy and his work

I've been very surprised by the latest Rolling Stones album. Lots of raw energy. Bob Vylan goes hard with Humble as the Sun. Lemon Twigs with Everything Harmony. A highlight being In My Head, very chill song.
Last year I really got into music, it started like late 2022 when I started getting into hyperpop a bunch for the first time but over 2023 a lot of really good stuff came out! My top 5 would have to be (no particular order) Wallsocket, Myrtle broadway & the big bang theory by can of bliss, Rat Wars by Health, Census Designated by Jane Remover, and Earwax by six impala Not released this year but i also really got into Machine Girl's more hardcore discography they have fs become my favorite artist i've been listening to "...because i'm young arrogant and hate everything you stand for" so much these last couple months. Also got big into Cybergrind this year, it's like this tiny very online electronic metal scene going on. Big albums for that are BEJIBLE which is just an absolutely insane album i really don't know how to describe it... also death awaits by blind equation was cool as hell its this like nintendocore cybergrind its awesome. would like to say i listened to softscars for the first time after hearing Alex talk about it and I really digged it incredible album
You guys should listen to Your Best Friend Jippy, he makes hip hop beats, mostly instrumental, and made 3 projects in 2023, beat Tape 38 and 39 and Lonnie Parachute (Parachute has a rapper on it)
Some smaller artists albums I really loved this year : Draped In Fog and Chanting Into The Furls of a Low Income Apartment by Moon Well (if we’re into lofi queer folk), Our Skies Smile by Gingerbee (hyperskramz), and Girl With Fish by Feeble Little Horse (off kilter shoegaze)
Last year, I really felt like I began to reach the end of the pipeline with having a bunch of warp record stuff from the 90s in my rotation but I know there's another layer to drill into. It wasn't too difficult to get into with my ears getting used to DG and fka twigs, but ventolin by aphex twin and the electronic tracks from drukqs did challenge me a bit. Anyways, looking forward to the future of what's being work-shopped here and if there'll be anything new for me to get into throughout 2024.

Honestly I just want to thank you guys so much for doing this podcast. I’ve been listening to sleep deprived since September so I’m still a new fan, but I always feel like the podcast scratched the surface of your personalities and hobbies. This podcast just seems to completely open a side of you we’ve never seen, and its what I’ve wanted to see for so so long!!
Not only that, but I’ve always been curious about your guys’ music taste and opinion after listening to both of your music for a couple of months now- so getting recommendations that are not only so frequent, but in an amazing quality too? Another sick video game soundtrack that came out this year would be the soundtrack for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. It’s like Jet Set Radio 2, and they got Hideki Naganuma to compose for them too!

one of my favorite artists last year is called takayan!! they didnt release an album but they released A LOT of singles. My favorite was "Love doesn't have rules" they discuss a lot of relatable themes like mental heath, identity, etc- but i mostly like it cuz it's a lot of fun to listen to!

Being a lesser known math pop/ post hardcore band coming from Poland I didn’t understand a word that was being said on this project.
Which I don’t think is needed as all my enjoyment for this project is a product of the catchy melodies, great riffs, chaotic and ever changing song structures and a super passionate & weird singer.
Even tho not my favorite project of this year it had me the most impressed and I really look forward to what they’re going to do next.

Very nice lists both of you. My top album this year was Grave Robbing by leroy/Jane Remover. That entire album is a Mashup album that goes beyond Mashups.
Though I do also want to talk about Carousel, because Vylet Pony is so underrated and her music is actually incredible.

I re-listened to Painkiller's "Guts of a Virgin" Album recently. I listened to it a really long time ago, but I totally forgot how it went. I have to say, it makes for an insane workout! Tracks can be really short (A few seconds) to a couple minutes, but the mix of Mick Harris' Machine-gun drumming, Bill Laswell's 6-string Bass, and John Zorn's Saxophone squeals and screams, it KILLS!
this is my favorite tv show, the "will they wont they" is insane
this year was so stacked for me so much so i could hardly even pick a top 5, with rock albums like Dogsbody, The Lamb as Effigy, After the magic/night, Census designated and hip hop albums like Scaring the hoes, Maps, We buy diabetic test strips, i couldnt find an easy AOTY for me. If there was a gun to my head i'd probably say The Lamb as Effigy but every other one i mentioned also got played the FUCK out of me.
TLAE managed to hit me with the "swans"esque post rock/experimental rock sound i never got into through swans, at first i just loved the way they shape noise in the album, it feels actually *searing* - something i havent heard in an album since Schlagenheim (in my top 3 favourite albums OAT). The best way i can describe it is if you mixed the noise rock of Black midi, post rock of Swans, and vocal style of BCNR's Isaac wood, with some added american poetic twang. It can be exciting and it can be downtempo and calm and it can be poetic or harrowing. Its just such a good display of ART in a noise rock way. I have a very limited vynil collection but after my second listen i immediately bought it cuz it was so good.

Maps is actually Billy woods (a conscious/abstract hip hop veteran) and Kenny segal's 2nd collab album, their first one - Hiding places (2019) is also amazing though the production is more post punky/abstract rather than jazzy. Armand hammer (a rap duo Billy woods is in) also dropped Haram (2021) with production from the alchemist, yall should check it out if you like the jazzyness of Maps. Overall Billy woods has a HUGE and AMAZING discog ngl.
tbh my favourite album from 2023 was "The Jaws Of Life" by Pierce The Veil, lovely album
History won't absolve me is my favorite billy woods album, I recommend.

Sorry for this essay of a comment but I like yapping about music so here I go.
If I’m being completely honest, even tho I love music, I hadn’t really focused on any music let alone new music because I had been busy with uni. But the 2 albums that really stuck out to me that I did get to catch when they released was NCT127’s album called Ay-yo and Kim Dracula’s debut album A Gradual Decline in Morale. NCT127 kpop and Kim Dracula is an alternative trap artist. My two main genres are Kpop and Rock so that’s my range.
If kpop isn’t your thing I get it, tbh they came out with that album so early in 2023 that I forgot but I recommend those who are interested in Kpop. And if you’re into noise music NCT127 (NCT in general really) is the Kpop group for you!
I totally recommend Kim Dracula’s music. He was the guy that made the emo version of paparazzi and it went viral on TikTok in like 2022 and they make their own music. I actually checked out his music as a joke but I genuinely liked their music. When this album came out I was taken aback because Kim Drac is the type of artist to mix in different genres (check out Make Me Famous and Land of the Sun) and this album strings together like every track flows seamless (hopefully that made sense). I reallllly recommend this album and Johnathan Davis from Korn has a feature in one of the track and I love it so much!! Kim Dracula became my top artist for 2023 which is crazy because I discovered his music as a joke at first.
i love george clanton. absolutely one of my top artists i recommend people see live. the visuals, his singing, the instrumentals, the crowd, everything. love that guy and his work

Last year I really got into music, it started like late 2022 when I started getting into hyperpop a bunch for the first time but over 2023 a lot of really good stuff came out!
My top 5 would have to be (no particular order) Wallsocket, Myrtle broadway & the big bang theory by can of bliss, Rat Wars by Health, Census Designated by Jane Remover, and Earwax by six impala
Not released this year but i also really got into Machine Girl's more hardcore discography they have fs become my favorite artist i've been listening to "...because i'm young arrogant and hate everything you stand for" so much these last couple months.
Also got big into Cybergrind this year, it's like this tiny very online electronic metal scene going on. Big albums for that are BEJIBLE which is just an absolutely insane album i really don't know how to describe it... also death awaits by blind equation was cool as hell its this like nintendocore cybergrind its awesome.

Last year, I really felt like I began to reach the end of the pipeline with having a bunch of warp record stuff from the 90s in my rotation but I know there's another layer to drill into. It wasn't too difficult to get into with my ears getting used to DG and fka twigs, but ventolin by aphex twin and the electronic tracks from drukqs did challenge me a bit. Anyways, looking forward to the future of what's being work-shopped here and if there'll be anything new for me to get into throughout 2024.
