Game of Thrones season 8 is coming up so we wanted to do a video inspired by one of the coolest shows ever created!
In Game of Thrones there is a special weapon called Wildfire that glows green, burns green and is super explosive so today we’re going to make this chemical (or potion) but for real and then do some fun experiments with it.
Our Wild Fire consists of: methanol, or wood alcohol and two ingredients. 1) is a glow stick 2) boric acid.
The glow stick gives us this really need glowing green color in the solution and the boric acid will give us a nice green fire.

How does this only have 6k views?

instead of lighting the shield on fire you guys could have just made it into a Molotov, wildfire Molotovs lol
GREEN FIREEEEE!!! I literally almost missed the shield on that. I am not sports. Also I totally ruined my sweatshirt when one of the glow sticks exploded on me but it was WORTH IT. 🎆🔥😱🙌
totally worth it man!!
Believe me! The videos are seriously underrated!
Thank you very much for this video !
Unique video. Not like sugar rocket everybody does and fire looks so similar to the game of thrones wildfire amazing. 🔥
fun seeing you guys again you're fun!
thank you so much, I love shooting with Trace... always makes the video more fun!
Count me as a new subscriber, I loved your tribute to Grant. Your channel has so many good videos and you have safety officers, nice. Keep broadcasting!!
You forgot 1 part. Where’s the explosion?
Y’all raw asl
Hi nick is this same technique used in harry potter film to travel floo network.
This needs like 10 million views.
they must have been down at the local pub before they started filming lol
this was the last of four videos... we were pretty loopy at this point... but we sure had fun making this vid!
i love how they have the jar of methanol sitting next to the flame.. in an alternate universe some say they never heard the bang.
This is epic af
Maleficent, where are you
I'm curious, since I can't buy glowstick fluid in bulk, is there an alternative or way for me to make it myself?
Literally any fluorescent dye would give the same effect. The problem with the glowsticks is that they get diluted so much the glow is pretty weak. So you're better off with any fluorescent dye.
However:
As it seems you are not experienced in chemistry, hence I would highly discourage you from doing it.
Yes it is cool, but it is also highly toxic in many ways. Unless you exactly know what you're doing, don't.
That’s awesome 👍
thank you! We thought so too!
Hi nick and trace. Your experiment is amazing..
Nick you are my science teacher...i learned lot from you..
I saw predator when was four in 1995... This film was my first english film i seen in cinema theatre..
Nick one qn
Is this same concept they used in harry potter's floo network?
Thanks for your awesome video nick..
Have a nice day..
that's so awesome Predator was your first film! I still love it today (an Arnold classic)
Came for Trace. Stayed for the exploding green fire.
amazing! (both are wonderful)
That is lit
suuuuper lit!

This was INCREDIBLE! Wow. What are the components that make glow sticks glow? Were they available to people in the Middle Ages? (as I suppose GoT is based on plus magic) Just wondering because methanol and boric acid seem pretty straightforward. Are methanol and boric acid used in "malatov cocktails?"
As far as I know, a Molotov Cocktail was made with ethanol/methanol, mixed with petrol (gasoline), in a 50/50 mix by volume ...
... but a google search should confirm that, and/or any other additives.
The problem was/is boric acid is that readily avaiable, and I am not sure ammonium nitrate fertilizer was available either ....
Luigi’s fireballs
If I drank that would I be like human torch?
Need to mass produce for………… church reasons you know
Your videos are so great. You really helped me calm down from an anxiety attack when I was watching this video thank you.
glad to help : p
@@NickUhas thank you for taking the time to respond
Would it burn on water if you add magnesium?
Theoritically yes
throwing it into water? no, the methanol, trimethylborate and boric acid dissolve in water and wouldn't stay on top. Magnesium self ingnites in air but it would not result in a green color as the bor compounds would already be gone.
Now if you let is slowly glide onto the surface of the water then yes, it could burn ontop of the water. Magnesium wouldn't change that though.
I was waiting for this...!!! I don't like Game of Thrones , but I love science and all the elements...!!! so I'm happy...!!! btw that beard looks so neat...!!! I love it...!!! Great job guys like always...!!! :3
thank you!! we've been really excited about this video... totally exceeded our expectations!
@@NickUhasyou could do a colorful fire you just need to find different glow sticks color... a fire rainbow...!!!
Nice
Throw wildfire aka a green molotov
Wow
Looks awesome
thank you so much!!
Only 807 likes no bullshit deserves way more!
What happened in Panama in 1998?
lol...only the polaroids can tell that story
Where's a heinaman when you need need one?
me want wildfire
OMG THIS VIDEO IS EVERYTHING!!! Science + GOT = Quality Content
Got a got-related question:
Who’s death hit you the greatest/were upset the most about?
honestly, it was Ned Stark, that set the tone for the rest of the series... don't get attached!
That was really dope
thank you!!! we we're super stoked on it
Ummm But didn't wildfire burn on water? Can you do that....
Use petrol instead of wildfire.
👍
👍🔥🔥🔥😎
Greek Fire
02:29 What IS that that keeps showing on reflection? ~ 11:57 What slid down and into the beaker?
so it's kind of a joke... Trace is the host, tres is the number...any who, the item in the beaker is a charge they use for movies to explode squibs (from our pro sfx guys)
Oh. I didn't know that Trace is the host. Thank you for clearing that up. ~ The second part is more confusing. Why is the charge in the Glow Stick? Was there one in EVERY Glow Stick I have ever purchased?
I don't know what that reflection is @ 02:29. Honestly it's probably cars.
As for 11:57... all glowsticks have little glass vials inside them that contain the chemicals that allows them to glow a color (in this case, green). When you bend a glowstick, what you're doing is breaking that vial. That's most likely what fell into the beaker.
@@jimmyrrpage this is exactly correct, also the reflection is from our "lite mat" its out LED lighting system for filming
@@NickUhas Cool! I'd love to see that lighting system! Do you have like a behind the scenes video that features it?
This was awesome, the color and everything was on point. However, is it possible to make it burn on the surface of water, like it does in the show? It probably won’t work with methanol, since it is able to mix with water, but maybe with a different flammable liquid?
this is such a great question and I think we perhaps should do a follow up vid attempting this
slowly releasing it onto the surface of the water would result in a layer of your methanol solution ontop of the water. Would work even better if you have salt water due to the density-difference
Its was super cool but you spilled a highly toxic methanol
Nice video 👌
thank you, we we're so excited it worked the way it did!
As always great chemistry but you should really experiment with other colored flames as well
for sure, what colors would you want to see!?
red-lithium, orange-calcium, yellow-sodium ,violet-potassium
Thank you for this maximum geekage! 8)
that's Trace and I : )
Any tips on filming a science video?
do it safely!
