I brought the camcorder and my dad insisted to take some video at the mall so that he could show the video to my relatives in Hong Kong about what was shopping mall in Canada looked like...and now the video becomes historic video
Great video! It's refreshing to see older footage of shopping malls. I remember being in Scarborough Town Centre about 5 years ago, I lived in Owen Sound at the time and I didn't make it to Toronto nearly as often as I wanted to. I love Toronto. I sometimes think they should leave the older architecture and simply maintain it and keep it as close to the original design as possible. Sure, it would scream 70's, 80's, early 90's, but that's cool! Take me back to those years! I wanna go back!
We used to do most of our Christmas shopping there years ago, when we lived in Scarborough. Great mall, clean, good food court, lots of variety. Haven't been there in years, since we moved away. Miss it a lot.
I miss the old layout from the 90's especially in '96. Baskin Robbins used to be right across Compucentre that had 3 tv's showcasing the N64 and Playstation and Sega Saturn games. There used to be an Arcade on the far right corner of the food court where I think "Bourbon chicken" is right now I was 7 or 9 years old I miss those days!
It is hard for me to believe that going back in time upon watching this video that Eaton's would no longer be around at the turn of the millennium (as the old Eaton's department store chain went bankrupt in August 1999). In addition, I remember the old Games Maximus arcade (at the far end of the food court) from that time as well (when I was a teenager during the 1980s, it was then known as Wizard's Castle).
@adamthoba Unless you happen to be from the U.S., but the "re" spelling of Centre is correct in Canada (the "er" spelling of Center is the American spelling of the word, whereas the "re" spelling of Centre is both the correct Canadian and British spelling of the word).
Wow really nice upload! I have a lot of memories growing up with STC. I would always eat on top of the gazebo. I liked the old food court better. STC is sooo busy now and the food court is a zoo.
No I didn't use Firewire at all...I converted the original VHS-C video tape (with regular VHS video recorder thru VHS-c to VHS adaptor)to DVD (with DVD recorder)...then I converted the video from DVD to DivX format (with my computer) before uploaded to TH-cam
@Tungzout I am going to clarify things for you here a little. When the STC first opened in 1973, Simpsons occupied where the Bay is now while Eaton's occupied where Sears is now (as the part where Walmart now is came opened in an expansion in 1979, as this was where the original Bay store was). Then, after Hudson's Bay Company pulled the plug on its Simpsons division in 1991, the Bay then decided to move into the space where the old Simpsons store used to be (which it still currently occupies).
Great video! Funny how many things haven't changed in the mall..Bata, A&W, Manchu Wok, Peoples,Bulk Barn and the Eatons is now Sears. The theater got pulled out and now sits on the outside of the mall. BTW, there were plenty of mall gangsters in those days, the arcade was the place to buy or sell anything...people got robbed daily in the RT overpass and TTC platforms.
@waterlizardz123 Actually, the old Eaton's store is where the Sears store is now located. On the other hand, the Bay store was the original Simpsons store at STC from 1973 to 1991 (until Hudson's Bay Company pulled the plug on its Simpsons division in June 1991). Once HBC had done away with its Simpsons division, the Bay store at STC (which is now where the Walmart store is) decided to relocate into the space that was the old Simpsons store.
@Tungzout With the Bay now having moved to its new (and current) location in 1991, Sears then decided to occupy that space (where the Walmart store currently is). Then, when Eaton's went bankrupt in August 1999, Sears then decided to occupy the space where the old Eaton's store was (Sears actually took over a number of old Eaton's stores upon Eaton's going bankrupt), in which Walmart then decided to take over the space that was first occupied by the Bay, and then Sears.
I have a foggy memory of the older STC; it felt like it went through so many changes so fast :O I do remember that food court. It use to be balcony over the lower floor before they constructed some walkig area over it, lol
Ahhh so many memories of STC from when I lived in Scarborough as a kid...I still go to the mall every few months but it just seems so ghetto now even though they're renovating.
lol, i remeber the arcade and the old theatre near the entrance off the subway. i think the last movie i watched at that theatre was waterboy with adam sandler.
??? It was Sears that bought Eatons. The Bay got the eaton's space? I thought Sears moved into the Eaton space and Walmart took the old Sears space... AND...If the bay DID take the Eaton's store, why didn't they just stay where they were in hte mall and open up a Zellers before Wal mart had the chance to snatch up the space??? Oh well...
