- Undertale gets a ton of unwarranted hate for the "bad toxic undertale fandom" but even so, it's an amazing game... so even though this isn't anime it means a lot to me... so i figured it'd be perfect as a (late) 100k special part 2, thanks FamBase!

I don't know if I've said this before on this video, but I remember another Undertale video that described Sans as,"just powerful enough to realize how powerless he truly is," and the conclusion of this video's analysis of him perfectly fits that description.

While that is true, he is literally constructed to kill the main character;
A) When you fight him, you can one-shot kill everything, so it doesn't matter how many hp he has. Only having one health is just as weak as one thousand at that point, so his ability to dodge is the most overpowered ability you could have fighting a human with 19 LOVE.
B) When you fight him, you have an next to infinite defense, so any attack would do 1 damage anyways. Therefore, he could do 999 damage and it wouldn't make a difference. The only way to overwhelm this is hitting several times very quickly, and by dispensing of invisibility frames, he does this exactly.
Damn. Looking at Sans as a character, I realize that he's not just strong physically. But emotionally as well. He has to put up with all the resets, faking a smile and trying to be happy. Yet, he's still Sane. If I had gone through that, I would've literally just lost it....

People underestimate the power of Groundhog Day. Never being able to advance your own life, with it being in the hands of some godlike entity limited in power only by their own skillful control of an avatar. Imagine how much that would fuck with someone in real life. Or don't, because maybe you'd get depressed.
Beat undertale with the true pacifist ending then lock the file away into the depths of your pc so sans can live his life peacefully (if he decides to leave the underground)
I did that in my 2nd or 3rd attempt of my will. Not because I didn't want to play it anymore out of boredom, but out of sadness from what flowey says at the end of the true pacifist. The only thing that can end a happy ending and put all of them back there is YOU. This game is like none other. You don't see sans as skeleton data, but as a skeleton friend. Also flowey couldn't feel emotions. The genocide was a desperate attempt at regaining those. Let's be real here. You would go insane if you were in his condition too. Now I proudly say I didn't play the genocide ending, so I don't know chara's personality, but the true pacifist after genocide makes you feel you made the difference. IN A BAD WAY. These three characters are the key to you being bonded emotionally to the game. Like the game has its own emotional moments but it's these three that makes you feel like everyone is special to you. Also few people know about this but the hacker ending is a way to handle you trying to outplay the system, stopping you on your tracks. I found no evidence but it might appear if you try to delete the genocide data.

@Airock the Great If something had to be entirely new to be interesting we wouldn't be interested in storytelling since ancient greece. Storytelling isn't about creating something new ex nihilo, but building a new and personnal take on pre-existing concept with the pieces laid out by previous work.
Undertale isn't less interesting because of deadpool and bugs bunny already existing, it's actually made more interesting by those thing existing and laying the fundation for such a work. Just like Molière and Shakespeare did the same for deadpool and bugs bunny with character that had similar dynamics.
The fact that undertale didn't resonate with you doesn't make it overrated. And you can't deny that a lot of what it does is subtle and well crafted despite the many flaws of the game. You can replay the game several time and still find new and interesting things and still seeing things with a new perspective.
Nobody is saying that undertale is the only great work with 4th wall breaking, multiple metanarrative layers, symbolism, a use of it's medium specifics aimed towards strengthening storytelling, overall enjoyable, with a great message and full of great intent and passion. No but saying undertale has these thing doesn't lessen any other work... but it indeed does make undertale great for a lot of people.
If it didn't work out for you that's ok, but you don't need to put people down simply because you didn't get the same enjoyment out of a game than they did.

During the sans fight, he states that timelines were “jumping back and forth” and “looping into each other” and that “all of a sudden, everything ends.”
My theory on this is that sans cannot see the resets. He can’t remember the saves, the loads or anything. Let’s say the universe of undertale is your computer. There are millions of universes, but none are linked. The timeline, however, is the current game you have loaded. Before the time undertale takes place, sans worked with gaster or used the machine in the lab behind his house and foresaw the changes in the timeline. This saved it in his memory from before the resets, allowing him to see the resets. The time and date of the universe at which the timeline occurs. He memorised the time and dates for the first 10 or so deaths of the player but can’t remember past that, hence he stops counting. He doesn’t remember he killed you, but he remembers seeing himself kill you and the load of the timeline, where it “loops back on itself.” He remembers it all, but not from his perspective, but from the perspective of the machine that he used to see the timelines. He “gave up trying to go back” when he gave up trying to prevent the tangled mess of the timelines that he foresaw and broke the machine, which is why it is broken at the time of the game. This is supported by his next line: “not the surface, I mean. That doesn’t appeal to me anymore.” Where he realised that when the player inevitably beats him and the king, they will destroy the timelines once and for all. Until they come back, which he doesn’t know about. When he kills you after you’ve spared him, the text that you hear is probably a dream, or nightmare, rather, that is shown just after death. This is supported by real life, where for a few minutes after death, you still have brain activity, similar to a dream. In game, when you sleep at Toriel’s house after she goes downstairs, you hear asgore tell you to get up. This is a dream, mirrored by the classic game over screens. You don’t see this in the snowed inn because you don’t sleep due to the snoring rabbits in the room next door. Now back to sans. In his dialogue, he’s not talking to frisk (or rather, chara). He’s talking to the player. He knows that something larger is causing this. He knows that he can’t convince the kid to stop, but the player. He says “you’re responsible for this, huh” meaning that the player downloading the game was what ended flowey’s torture and genocide and started frisk’s. The player was the catalyst that made frisk chose to fall into the underground and confront flowey. Start the game. It was the player. Sans also says in his last words hoping to make the player give up that “you don’t do it for good, or bad, you do it because you can, and because you can, you *have to.* ” stating that because the player knows that this game is just code and fiction, they can do whatever they want. They can play however they want and because they can, they “have” to find out what would happen. So they do. He only wants to kill the player in pacifist because he saw the timelines and knows something is going to go down.
Long story short, sans doesn’t remember the loads, saves and resets. He remembers the things he saw, the timelines looping and jumping and changing due to the player dying and he hates them for it. The world ends. Sans was right. But then it comes back. Everything happens again, but its always slightly different. Everything is an anomaly. And sans knows that whatever he does it will always disappear.
I promised myself I would do a pacifist run before I quit undertale. The difference is, how long will that last. Technology breaks down. In the final timeline, sans was right. “Then, everything just... ends.”
It was my fault. It was the player’s fault. It was *our* fault.

Speedrunners would like to disagree, it takes around 1 hour if you speedrun (very well)
6:23 Incase your wondering why sans still hates humans, and would have killed Frisk if it wasn't for Toriel, is because well humans are the reason monsters are trapped in the underground in the first place. All monsters other than Toriel hates humans because of that specific reason. The point of the game is to essentially change the monsters perception of humans and help guide them out of the underground.

Also, Toriel and Asgore are the only monsters to stay alive ever since Chara fell down, so they are the only two monsters in the entirety of the current Underground, who have had a personal experience with Chara to change their POVe on humans.
And Toriel says some things that imply that she wouldn't be anywhere NEAR as merciful if the player character was an adult. She'll shelter a child of any species, but I don't think she likes humans in general, either.

The great thing about Sans is he’s genuinely the weakest opponent you face he simply moves out of the way, in dialogue with Undyne she talks about how when she’d train with Asgore she could never hit him because he was so good at dodging which seems to imply moving isn’t a skill exclusive to Sans he’s just the only one who does it

He dumped everything into speed, which is not even a stat in the game.
it's a hidden stat, you boost it from sea tea, getting hit by a Vulky and I think Temmie armour slightly raises it. how do you feel about the idea his total HP is mega high from all the sleep like the Inn keeper's kid mentioned.
Basically he can actually manipulate a lil bit of realit because even if he does 1 damage there is no cooldown like you just keep on getting damage repeatedly
Yeah, it's like in Megaman when you pause the game it resets all enemy INV so you're little attack can deal tons of damage, perhaps Sans is doing the same, Frisk gets the save, Flowey has hacked levels of high stats and sans has the pause function, or it could be gravity magic getting used to cause relativistic effects on time or his quantum physics going into play to irradiate your SOUL or match the frequency of an INV frame.
the actual reason is that monsters fight with their souls and magic, not melee. so they launch a magic pattern at you, you run up and club them over the head and they're super confused about what just happened.
so all sans is doing is basic sidesteps. why should he take your hits head on? not like anyone else who did that lived to tell the tale.
Once I completed the pacifist route... I didn't have the heart to reset and stopped playing.
I completed it as my second Playthrough last week and now i cant bring myself to start the game again...
Val Broderick I realy feel you, i played the game only one time and did a true pacifist run, after that i kinda though over 1h if i should reset or not , in the end i just couldn't , Jiminy Cricket would have killed me ,if i did it.
I went in, on my first playthrough did a pacifist, thought I failed because I fought Omega Flowey, and then completed True Pacifist. I haven't touched the game since, it's just sitting on my laptop. Sometimes I open it and look at all the happy characters on the main screen, and I remember why I haven't reset.

I also didn't have the heart to play again after completing the pacifist route. At some point I considered resetting to play pacifist again because I had missed a couple things and I'd been feeling nostalgic but, turns out that even if you do a "True Reset" after the pacifist ending Sans has proof that you got them the pacifist ending. In Sans' lab the photo album has a third photo in it and it's the photo you take with everyone when you get the true pacifist ending, so it feels like he knows you got them to the surface but decided to bring them back because you weren't satisfied meaning even if you break the barrier you'll never let them actually leave the underground... so, yeah I decided not to reset.

I didnt get anything because i havent played the game
So i searched for more information
And you know why sans became my favorite?

He IS funny and goofy
But i soon realize,he kept his promise and he's smart and clever
And he got these abilities where he can teleport,manipulate gravity and even remember the past timelines
And he even warned you after you killed him in the genocide route
Because an evil CHARActer is about to appear and steal your soul
But,if you play pacifist route,he is nice and all,he greets you like a true friend,he informs you about special attacks
And he even make puns just to keep you happy (and to keep his secrets)
And he also reminds you that fighting isnt always the right thing
And sometimes,its alright to give up especially when you're going on the wrong path

Oh yeah. Part the reason why sans can't kill and won't kill you in pacifist route cause his power is karma. Which is the posion which he inflicts Everytime he damages you based on how many lv and xp you have gained. Soo basically his attacks actually do 1 damage but the karma makes it hurt like a bullet train
He could still probably wreck us in a pacifist run since we only have 20hp but since we havent really done anything wrong he lets us be
even if karmic retribution doesn't work, his bones still does 1 damage and ignores invincibility frames
Karma is the thing that gives you good things if you did good stuff and vice-versa. You almost got it correct, the true reason is that his karma would heal you in the pacifist route
Layzee Craven still ignores invincibility frame, 1 bones deal 1 dmg per .1 sec or something

Sans doesn't remember resets, he only knows about them. The reason why he seems to be able to remember other saves is because he's really observant. He's able to infer a lot of things. He guesses that you've died based on your facial expressions. Also, literally no one except you and Chara remember the genocide timeline because it was literally *erased*.

I loved Undertale. It was a genuinely novel experience, crafted so well, with such attention to detail and emotional intelligence that I was floored multiple times through my first playthrough.
I'll never forget fighting Toriel the first time. I couldn't shake my traditional RPG mindset, and though I'd spared every monster up to that point, I'd stockpiled Spider bake sale goods, just in case. I kept using them during the Toriel fight, to last a little longer, plead one more turn before she'd accidentally kill me, this happened over and over and over, each time seeing the split second of shock on her face and knowing she hadn't meant to kill me. Finally I thought, "hey.. maybe I need to reduce her to a small amount of HP and THEN she'll listen.", I accidentally killed her.. reset, and the next fight I used no items, and just let it happen, and she started MISSING ME on purpose! I was shocked. Then, after the tearful farewell, Flowey KNEW what I'd done, accidentally or not, I was a murderer..
This game was-- is-- brilliant and I will always Love it.

4:09 - Theory, the reason why Sans is in random places is because he is observing the player, getting ready for judgement hall time. But if you kill his brother, you won't find him anywhere, he doesn't care about you, but to try his very best to slaughter you at Judgement hall, like you, the character slaughtered his brother.

Sans doesn't remember resets, he only knows about them. The reason why he seems to be able to remember other saves is because he's really observant. He's able to infer a lot of things. He guesses that you've died based on your facial expressions. Also, literally no one except you and Chara remember the genocide timeline because it was literally *erased*.
ALSO, I personally don't think that he would've killed you at the beginning of the game if he didn't make that promise, but probably at judgement hall if he didn't see you as worthy or something like that, mostly to satisfy his brother probably. If you did true pacifist, maybe he wouldn't kill you, I'm not sure.
Also, I could go on a huge rant about what his dialouge means or his entire character and stuff like that but the box would probably be full by then.

I’ve always found it unlikely he would kill you based on the fact that he tells you “before all this I was secretly hoping we could be friends. i always thought the anomaly was doing this because they were unhappy, and when they got what they wanted, they would stop all this.” Suggesting he thinks you’ll stop resetting if he’s nice enough to you.

Usually it doesn't matter but I always see smug anime fans talk shit about other fandoms when their fandoms are so bad that lots of people you'd talk to in real life are genuinely afraid of anime fans. And let's face it, Undertale's fandom's bad reputation is more of an internet thing, in the peak of Undertale's popularity, most people I knew didn't know about UT but they stay the fuck away from anime and its fandom.
But more importantly the internet does these stupid contrarian things. For a while Undertale is basically treated like god given pixelated form. A lot of people complained about the fandom when it was getting bad. Suddenly, end of 2016, the fandom finally died down and people are bitching about those awful fans to this day. I haven't heard shit from bad undertale fans in two years. All of the ones I know who are still fans are fine these days (obviously moreso on the internet because, once again, Undertale wasn't too well known IRL). But the hatedom is beating a dead horse. Like the fandom is completely dormant and do their own thing instead of shoving it down everyone's throat, which is the biggest sin a fandom can commit. But people keep shoving the hatedom down our throats and how it some how makes the game worse, a game that I'm sure half the people who say they hate it now were on the same bandwagon jerking it off in October three years ago.

You know. It's funny you mention the importance of music within the game. I had never considered the idea of that single moment of silence having such a powerful meaning, but it makes a lot of sense. I also feel the music has a lot more of a meaning in and of itself. Particularly with the track "It's Raining Somewhere Else." I believe that the name is a reference to the genocide route. In the moments when this track plays, Sans is confronting you, explaining his promise and how he was able to keep it. In the pacifist route, it isn't "raining" there. Things are okay. People are happy, things have worked out so far, even if the journey isn't over yet. But it IS "raining" somewhere else. That place is the genocide route. People are suffering, a danger is sweeping across the underground as it falls silent with dust floating through the air. I may be looking into it too much, but I think this track and its name has a major significance to the idea of alternate timelines within the story. And that's only one example of something so insignificant as the name of a music track having all of the significance to the story considering how names of other tracks also have a lot of deeper meaning, or at least they appear to.

Agreed, Paps KNOWS, but my theory is just that he probably doesn't know the extent. Like, Sans obviously doesn't remember the timelines but maybe he's seen them through that broken machine? And either Paps did some poking around on his own or Sans mentioned it to him bc he couldn't keep it a secret..but didn't mention EVERYTHING. It's just obvious he knows with the line u mentioned and the one in the True Pacifist, "This is the worst possible ending!" Also, Paps has a really positive attitude, so maybe he just washes away the worries with the attitude to strive forward, his mind is set to reach his goals. Sans..doesn't really have goals, is kinda pessimistic about the timelines and knows waaay more which lays a much heavied burden on him. But maybe it relieves him to know that at least Paps knows a bit and can help him, and lift him up from that state of mind.

Sans does not remember previous playthroughs. Sans underdtands that you have the power to reset the timeline and he has fail-safes, and is good at reading people. Perception is his true power, he can see your EXP and LV. Every time you fight him is the first time to him. He's just smart, and that makes him especially deeper.

sans canonically cant remember resets in the slightest, hell, he even needs to tell you different passwords so you travel back in time and tell them to him so he can know you are a time traveler, he wouldnt do that if he could remember.

sans doesn't actually remember the resets. the reason he can count your deaths is because he's excellent at reading people and he's extrapolating on your frustration to get a stab at how many times you've done this. the reason he stops counting at 12 is because the slight variations in your fury and determination become too slight for him to read, so he figures the answer is "more than 12" and can't get any more specific.
which is why he asks you to count for him, starting at 12.
the actual source of sans's power is knowledge. he perfectly understands the rules of his world, how a turn works, what a frame is, how many attacks one can launch per second, and he uses that to do things like: take the first turn when only you can do that, apply a poison effect in a game without status ailments, dodge attacks without a dodge mechanic, take two turns at once and extend his turn by warping you between frames. sans is overpowered because he breaks the rules established by every other character. the only other characters to do that are asriel: god of hyperdeath (who takes your ability to use the menu away) and photoshop flowey (who just breaks all the things), and both of those entities are gods and the same person.
SniperYoshi there is no dodge mechanic. undertale is a game and knows it. there is no code that allows any monster to dodge attacks, there is no dodge roll, no quickstep, nothing. no monster has the ability to dodge your attack because their code doesn't allow it.
except sans.
and no, asgore doesn't have a dodge mechanic either, no matter what the story says. asgore is incapable of dodging you in battle. it has nothing to do with frisk's speed and everything to do with the anomaly's presence.
when i say status aliments, i mean "poison, blind, silenced, burn, frozen, shocked, armour broken" etc. the game doesn't have any of those debuffs that affect your stats, except for being faster or slower. i-frames are not a status aliment and removing them doesn't count because only sans is able to do it. not even asriel does that. and no, the soul changes are not a status ailment, they're closer to a stance change.

sans does his turn 23 and turn 24 in a single move, his gauntlet and then his special attack. sans dodges in a game where enemies can't dodge. sans takes the first turn when only the player gets the first turn. the battle music playing is not sans's, sans has a battle theme and it isn't megalovania. sans's attacks don't grant you i-frames, every other attack in the game, even hyper-goner, does. what do you mean, "sans isn't breaking the rules"? sans breaks every rule and keeps doing it, up to the point where even YOU get to break some rules by moving the battle box, attacking when it's not your turn and getting two attacks out instead of one, none of which are skills the player has at any other point in the game.

SniperYoshi and the part you're missing is that the code of the characters is part of them. undertale is a meta game, the characters aren't only what the story says. asgore's dodging falls under an informed attribute, because he is incapable of dodging in-game, and guess what? there's multiple stories reasons why asgore doesn't dodge in his battle too, not just mechanical ones.
it's karmic. the removed text boxes calls the ability "karmic retribution", those same text boxes you're getting the "doomed to death of KARMA" information from.
do you know what a hypothesis is? a hypothesis is an idea you present without evidence but that you hope to find evidence for. "sans's power increases with your bad deeds" is a hypothesis, because there isn't enough evidence to prove it. if you could prove it, it would then be a theory.
it's not vague. sans takes the first turn for a thematic reason and for a shock reason. the monster gets the second turn, and the player isn't expecting it. sans breaks the rules there to confuse and anger you, it's the same reason that he will cut his speech short exactly once and suckerpunch you with the opening move. he's trying to break your will, make you rage quit and reset.
"how the fight is stationed" isn't a sentence that makes sense, and whether it makes sense thematically or not, he's still broken the rule, a rule that literal god asriel didn't break, and he ate the timeline.
right. the box is moveable. but not by the player. only in that specific moment can the player move the box, which breaks the established rules. if i made a story where the rule was that humans can only pick up boxes and elves can only pick up barrels, a human picking up a barrel breaks the rules. it doesn't matter how many times they do it, all that matters is that the rule was broken. monsters can move the box, humans can't. and then the human breaks the rule.
That’s one of the things I love about him. He has the least ripple-effect-proof memory of any of the main characters, everyone else has those slight memories. Him? He just reads your face
he breakes the rules constantly, he dodge when he shouldnt (no monster can do it, despite asgore dodging in canon) he skip invincibility frames which is a direct and simple cheat, he attacks you IN THE MENU, which is undeniablya cheat, etc etc

Yeah, flowey had the power to reset but to also remember everything and know most things, undyne has enough determination to stay alive after loosing all of her home, Asriel is a god and frisk can reset whenever he/she wants
Asriel can destroy a timeline with enough prep, Flowey is well...Asriel but kinda weaker, Undyne is literally a weaker version of frisk, and frisk is well...Basically above omnipotence i guess?
normal undyne and normal flowey are fodder and weaker than %95 of fictional characters.
asriel is pretty strong but not OP. i will put to him a multi-universal because when he erases a timeline he was say he was use his fraction power. but i must say a lot of characters can beat asriel. and lot of characters cant beat.
well omega flowey is pretty strong too. my think we can add him to a universal because he can reset and control timeline like a frisk + he has a much better stats

Feel like you forgot to mention how the very reason for him being lazy, goofy and chill is that he knows he doesn't have any true future if all of the timelines are always resetting. He knows life is meaningless, so he may as well just entertain himself in his pointless existence.
Undertale is objectively a brilliant game. The characters are so well designed, and not many games can elicit such a strong emotional response like this one does. No shame, this game is still one of the best of the decade.
I love sans, not because he's OP. He tries his best and hardest to be a good brother to papyrus, and to do the right thing, no matter what it costs, and manages to stay optimistic. As an older brother, i connect to him personally.
