I shot my first outdoor golden hour maternity portraits with my 50mm 1.4 GM the other day. I have happy clients! I also used the GM 35mm, 135mm GM, and GM2 70-200 all on my Sony A7RV.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:16 📸 The Sony 50mm f/1.4 GM is praised for its build quality and optical performance, making it David’s second favorite lens for client work. 00:42 🌟 Shooting at f/1.4 provides gorgeous bokeh and subject separation, making it ideal for portrait photography. The 50mm focal length offers versatility for medium shots and environmental portraits. 01:09 🎥 For video, the lens excels at events and weddings, offering cinematic footage with excellent autofocus performance even in challenging lighting conditions. 02:18 🔩 The lens's build quality is top-notch, featuring a textured black metal body, customizable function buttons, autofocus/manual focus switch, and weather sealing for durability. 03:16 📷 Optics and image quality are impressive, providing a clean-looking image with reduced aberrations. The lens features 11 aperture blades for smooth bokeh, and autofocus is reliable with minimal focus misses.
I’d save for the 50mm f/1.2GM 😂 that lens, I still want man! At the new GM 16-35mm PZ is all I would need. A notable mention would be the GM 135mm too haha
Personally, I'd take the Sony 50 f/1.4 GM over the Zeiss 55 because of the better AF performance, build quality, and aperture ring/custom function buttons, but the Zeiss 55 is a solid lens. It's really sharp from what I've seen and it's compact :)
I wish they'd made it a 58mm. It's a little bit too short for a real portrait lense. Sigma's 65mmf2 is a great tool for corporate portraits and similar stuff. Ok, you can crop in a little bit. Sure.
@DavidZhou Fot the past two years, I've been using the 70-200 mm f2.8 for ice hockey and portraits, hobby. I want a prime lens because I take a lot of indoor photos, portrait and events. I'm hoping the 50 mm is good enough for travel, too.
@@deandeleo6084 hmmm… I think the 50 would be great for travel if you mainly like shooting portraits. It’s a great focal length. The 35 would be better if you wanted wider shots (buildings, locations, etc.) but 50 works great as long as you have a little room to back up
Alright so you seem to have similar tastes as me. My favorite lens is the 24mm 1.4 as well. I was wanting to get an 85mm as my next prime, but you’re making me want to consider a 50mm now. Choices…..great video bud!
@@PaulFeinberg Haha thanks man! And it seems we have similar tastes indeed! I sold my 85 1.4 GM because I found I didn't like how far I had to be away from my subject which made it hard to use for video and and less convenient for portrait sessions, whereas the 50 is a lot more versatile! Plus when I need more reach I fall back on the 70-200 :)

Team 24gm & 35gm &50gm all f 1.4, all three great lenses
@@t87h21 sexy combo
@@thebaolerina yes, alle three the same size for filter and for GM very compact. That's the reason.

The 135 does get some great shots!
Thoughts on this vs Zeiss 55mm?

GM prices are painful. I’m gonna go give my Sigma 24-70 a hug.
😂
You’re not wrong 😅
Painful, but very worth it

That’s fair, a little tighter would make it a nice dedicated portrait lens but 50 makes it more versatile for more activities!
I can only afford one prime lens. I'm stuck between the 35mm 1.4 and the 50mm 1.4.
What do you mainly shoot and what other lenses do you have?

@@DavidZhou I might just pull the trigger on the 50 mm 1.4 today! Thank you for the feedback! Subscribed.
Would you recommend this lens for haircut videos and photos or the Sony 50mm? Or is 35mm g better for me?
Is it half a stop or a third of a stop between f1.2 and f1.4?
About 1/3 stop.
👍🏻
First!!!
