My favorite part of the entire episode was at 8:48 when Karl, describing the written Chinese language says, "The way they write... the.. the letters are weird, their alphabet's not like ours, their's is like... like someone testin' out a biro!" It's like, each of his perspectives is missing one or two really key pieces of info, but that being said, based on the info that he is working with, his logic is impeccable! The guy is like me though and finds it hard to not give spoilers - don't explain everything, let her watch a bit! Nice introduction to Karl though, well explained. I think a lot of new people stumble across him from the xfm TH-cam compilations.
The street with all the strange food is Wangfujing in Beijing. I know it well and it’s the only place in Beijing you’ll find this weird food. Usually the “weird” stuff is eaten in southern China. The north like to eat lamb, beef, chicken etc. None of my Beijing friends would eat this stuff!
Funny how it goes across all 3 series + how he struggles to bond with Warwick because Warwick's not being adventurous with food or had stomach "issues" and all Warwick's "exploitation" stuff + Karl's just, "look, let's earn them some money", because he knows it's a just few hours of their time, but could reallly help the Spider Sisters earn some money. I think Karl's got a really good attitude to disability, he asks questions outright, that might seem insensitive, but I think people get sick of knowing "you're thinking it" and Karl just asks stuff + I think it was really sweet where he's asking the sisters if they have boyfriends, just like you'd maybe tease any teenager. Karl's got the exact same worries as I'd have - weird/horrible toilets...
Karl's face does change, his subtle facial expressions are one of the funniest things about him. 16:58 the editor is taking a shot at Merchant here, goggle eyed fish faced freak.

Those sorts of food markets are actually quite common across a lot of China (especially rural, mainland China). I don’t think it’s been cherry-picked for TV 😋
It actually has. It’s Wangfujing street in north Beijing and it’s a famous street for these very odd foods. It’s the only place you’ll see this kind of food in Beijing as northern Chinese are really not into this strange stuff at all. Southern China is where most of this is eaten. This street has been chosen specifically. The rest of Beijing is more or less normal Chinese food.
It is actually not that usual to eat insects in China as many think, u have to go to marketplaces in the smaller villages, and the food culture varies a lot depending on where in China u are, it is a huge country after all, I met a guy who was born and raised in China and he had never even had an opportunity to try any of it 🙂
My 12 y.o. son went to China for a school trip, at the Beijing markets there were scorpions, spiders, sharks heads, bugs galore all on skewers. He accepted a challenge to eat them all without vomiting for $50. He won the bet but was almost undone by biting on a tooth in the shark head.
I've seen watched and rewatched this how more times than I care to remember butthat comment about the radio with headlights just cracks me up ever time. I don't even what it is about it cause it is a radio with headlights. Maybe it's just the fact that someone made a radio with headlights or the fact that he noticed it. I'm thinking it's the latter. I probably wouldn't give it a second glance and much less call it that if I did.
Suppossedly built to keep the Mongols out... But honestly. They never finished it because it didn't work. But still... Here we are... WONDER OF THE WORLD! Really?
You have to remember the Chinese eat so many odd things to us because of A) They are very practical, all the reasons we don't eat other animals and think it's weird is just our own illusion. Why is eating a shrimp but not a beetle that much different? Or hunk of cow leg versus a hunk of dog? B) They have a HUGE population and it takes a lot to feed folks. So anything starts becoming game. Then later normalized. Just like pigs feet or tripe in our country that used to be the food for the poor now foodies are making it trendy for the wealthy.
Having lived in Shanghai for 3 months I don't think I ever saw anyone spit in public or indoors. Bit of a harsh judgement. Gonna assume he doesn't like Chinese people since he said "I don't care".
That street food is absolutely standard in any market everywhere. Certain regions have their differences but yea, they'll eat anything. The only thing that I find stupid about this episode is that Karl complains about the restoration of the wall then sees the original, un-restored one and complains it looks shit lol
The bugs and insects street food is not an exageration and is common throughout Asia, not just China. They're regarded as a delicacy. No part of the animal is left as waste, it's all eaten. Spitting and hygiene is also a terrible problem. It's so over crowded that there's an explosion of bacteria and whenever you handle money or touch any surface or your mouth with your hands, unless you wash and disinfect your hands you will be sick. Spitting was also common not too long ago in Europe until it started to be frowned on due to the spread of TB. There are two great walls, one for the tourists and the original wall which is largely in ruins but still walkable. China is a fantastic place and well worth visiting. Karl was deliberately sent to locations which produce a reaction and so not reflective of China itself.
As a quick point, the idea that you can see the Great Wall of China from the moon is untrue. A book written in 1754 praised the Great Wall saying it was so grand it could surely be seen from the moon. That's as scientific as that particular idea ever got, but it just got repeated a lot ever since.
