The concussion these engines belt out kicks you in the chest, even if you're sitting in the stands. 12,000 horsepower makes a lot of noise, and those cylinders move a ton of air. You have to experience a NHRA event in person, these videos do it no justice. When the Top Fuel and Funny Cars make a full pass side by side, it literally pushes the air down the track and if you are sitting closer to the finish line, you see them coming before the sound arrives. Watching them fire up in the pits is an event unto itself. They first fire up on alcohol, which is pretty powerful itself, then they slowly feed in the nitromethane. Once fed in you can hear every cylinder making power. It's also fun watching the crowds reaction when they blip the throttle, because it sounds like an explosion taking place, it is instantly loud then quiet, the uninitiated will instantly jump back, and of of course it will bring tears to your eyes.

To blow your minds even more, keep in mind that the cars come back to the pits right after their run and immediately get torn down and checked before their next run which is usually about 45 to 50 minutes from when they enter the pits. That means there is no time to let the engine and exhaust cool down so they have to tear it down while its hot, like 400 to 500 degrees hot.

In 2019, Jessi Combs, broke the women's world speed record at 522.7 mph, but there was a problem when she started to try and slow down an crashed the car. She died at the scene of the crash, she was 39, RIP Jessi, one of bravest women I've seen. Also, her car was 52 feet long, if that tells how big it was. For production cares, we frequently compare 0-60 mph (about 97km/hr) times. The very fastest cars can reach 0-60 mph in about 2 seconds. A top fuel dragster reaches 60 mph by the time its rear wheels reach the starting line. That's a fraction of a second.

Our neighbor who lived two houses down from us (about 2500 feet away) always was working on her top field dragster in her garage. Sometimes during the day she would start it up and our house would shake. She was a really nice lady despite some people whining about the noise. I understand if it was during the night or morning of course, but she waited until about 4pm or so if she ever needed to fire the dragster up.
If you ever see dragsters race, it is VERY loud. As in very bad for your hearing loud. It's why people tend to have earplugs. But the feeling when you feel your chest vibrate as the dragsters take off is amazing. Like someone put a giant bass speaker up against you'd body.
If the cars crash, it can be violent. They also have drag chutes (parachutes essentially) that come out of the back of the car so it slows it down quickly at the end. If it didn't, there would be some major issues.

A few extra wild facts about these cars.
The amount of electricity being sent into each spark plug in each cylinder it is equivalent to two MIG welders.
The spark plugs are exposed to such an extreme amount of electricity, they melt away to nothing about midway down the track and the car "diesels" it's way the rest of the way down the track
The white flame you see in the exhaust is pure hydrogen burning, separated from the air by the intense heat of the exhaust.
The pistons compress the fuel air mixture so extremely that it's nearly a solid before the spark detonates the fuel-ait mixture.
When the cars launch, drivers experience 5Gs of force. Compare that to the now retired Space Shuttle, which only produced about 3Gs. Fighter pilots, in the most extreme maneuvers can experience up to 9Gs.
You should see these in ultra slow motion. When they launch, the middle of the car bends upward by more than 15cm due to the battle between thrust and inertia.
And in ultra slow motion, seeing the back tire wrinkle and wad up is fascinating. This is due to the extreme grip of the tire and the circular rotation of the wheel hub being initially mismatched.

The people who tested the g-limit on the human body came out near death at 45g. An they were training to get there. I've met most of the old-timers (including Courtney & Brittany Force's father, racing legend John Force and I love him to pieces -- great guy). I can get to any one of three sanctioned drag race tracks in less than 2 hours from where I live. Nothing like being there in person! The smells, the sights, the sounds. If you ever go, wear ear protection, either sound-cancelling ear muffs or ear plugs. The ground will rumble beneath your feet and you will feel a rush of hot wind as the cars scream past you. It's such a thrill. There are videos here on TH-cam of Night Under Fire, Norwalk, Ohio. How about a jet-powered semi-tractor? Or a jet-powered motorcycle? I've even seen them race a jet-powered bar stool many years back. You should check their TH-cam videos out and prepare to be even more amazed at racing at night!

I’ll never forget it, I’ve got old pictures of me around 7 or 8 years old sitting in John Force’s car, and the Force sister’s dragsters. They’re super nice people! When it comes to drag racing there’s nothing like being close to the starting line when top fuel dragsters/funny cars are running though. You can feel the ground shake and the vibrations going through your whole body when they take off, and it’s remarkable to watch them tear down and rebuild the engine and clutch after a run. It takes a whole team just to send those things down the track a single time for a few seconds. Love your reaction. I have a son-in-law involved in drag racing and have had the good fortune to be down by the starting line. The noise is insanely loud. So loud that it feels like it is beating up your chest. To see the cars race down the track is a better perspective of what it takes to be a drag race car driver. It takes tremendous talent to keep those cars going straight down the track. Reaction time to the starting light (they call it the Christmas Tree) is critical to winning or losing the race. If you start too soon you are disqualified (red-lighted is the term used). The fastest reaction time is 0.0003 seconds from when the lights go green. If you see an actual race, you will notice the cars do a "burn-out" down the track part way before returning back and setting up to race. They do this to heat up the rubber on the tires making them very sticky and allowing better grip for the sudden acceleration. The total race is 1/4 mile (a little over 402 meters) in between 3-4 seconds. And yes the engine is completely disassembled to clean every part, lubed and reassembled between each run down the track. The cost is exorbitant. A single engine can run between $70,000 to $120,000 alone. My son-in-law had to replace all four tie-rods on the car for each race at $1,000 apiece. Raced 5 rounds costing $20,000 to replace that one part.

The Force family has been a staple in NHRA for 50 years. You mentioned NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) was basically started with "moonshine drivers (bootleggers)" during the Prohibition years (1920-1933) driving bootleg whiskey in modified stock cars to avoid police. It became a serious competition sport in the late 1940's and spawned into MANY different motor sports. There's nothing like going into the pits at a Formula 1 or Nascar race and inhaling the exhaust and smell of burnt rubber tires. I live about 1/2 mile from Lucas Oil Raceway Park where the US Nationals are held every year in September and my house shakes when the big boys run. I love it.

You need to be there in person for the real experience! The sound of the motors and ground pounding vibration is amazing!

Shout out to the mother! Husband and 3 daughters strap themselves into rockets every weekend. Must be super stressful.

Don Garlits was the first driver to put the engine at the rear of the car. While recovering in the hospital after a bad accident he was in when the engine blew up in front of him, he had a brilliant thought. He started drawing up designs, and once out of the hospital, immediately went back to his garage a built a top fuel dragster with the engine in the rear, behind the driver. He honestly didn't think that design would necessarily be a winner. Boy, was he wrong. He kept winning with this new design and it didn't take long for all other drivers to follow suit.

Been to a NHRA race really loud and when the cars go by you can feel the vibration in the stands.

There's no way to understand the excitement and sound of this sport from watching that video. You have to experience it by being there.

You guys are an awesome loving family and I love watching your reactions. But don't forget to post the wonderful things New Zealand and the surrounding area has to offer. We showed you ours, now show us yours!

Watching it on video is nothing like the sights, sounds, and smells of the real thing!

10:09 The average top speed of a NHRA car is 330mph (531 km/h). The speed record for the the Isle of Man TT was achieved by Peter Hickman at 135.452 mph (217.989 km/h). So NHRA cars are 2.43x faster than the fastest speed ever achieved in the Isle of Man TT

I get you're trying to make a comparison, but you just don't know what you're talking about at all.

I've been quicker on the Isle of Sheppey TT, that's probably 134mph AVERAGE around the whole course...

Watching on tv doesn’t do it justice. Being at the race is much more eye opening. When the cars go by you it literally takes your breath away.

What you are seeing is seriously nothing compared to witnessing first hand. Things inside your body (which you weren’t even aware of) move and vibrate. And the Nell’s are awesome!
