I think the arguement could be made that Mike wouldnt have become this kind of boxer without all of that life's trauma to draw on for motivation to train and win. That raw killer instinct doesnt come from growing up happy and healthy. It comes from being hungry, scared, and desperate.

The story of Mike's fighting career was ultimately a tragic one, started out rough, found good guidance, lost that guidance, got taken advantage of by a bunch of snakes, then the downfall. But today he seems like a good man.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s so I saw Mike's fights as they happened. He was scary good. There will never be another.
Remember he got so good that he was upsetting people who pay for pay-per-view and the fights only lasted 90 seconds. Crazy times!

I'll never forget watching Tyson's fights for two reasons, one was simply how incredibly good he was, and the second was how pissed off he made us all because back then his fights were all "pay-per-view" and were expensive to watch, so we would always get a big group of friends together to pitch in and would put together a BBQ party for the fight, and then it would be over in like a minute! If you blinked you missed the whole thing!
Came to say the same thing. I remember inviting my dad over because boxing was always our thing. Made a huge spread of food, paid god knows however much they charged and it was over in like one minute. My dad was like, well. We should have just thrown that money out the window and it would have taken longer!
Had a huge party in highschool for the Tyson v. Holyfield fight (The Bite Heard Round the World). Turned to grab a slice of pizza and the fight was over!

Back in the day, championship fights were only televised on pay per view. After begging and pleading with my mom, she agreed to pay the $60 so I could watch Mike Tyson fight Bruce Seldon. The fight was over in 90 seconds and that was the last time she ever let me watch pay per view. Thanks Mike Tyson!

I'm not sure how I ended up watching this video with these two ? Crazy as it sounds I felt as if I was watching it with them.
It didn't mention it, but Spinks (the other undefeated guy) was so terrified to fight Tyson that he refused to come out of his dressing room for like 45 minutes. He accused Tyson of having something in his gloves, so officials had to unwrap and recheck Tyson's hands. It reportedly pissed Tyson off and he started punching holes in his dressing room walls.
I remember that. In the fight it looked to me that Stinks was looking for a place to lay down.😝
The delay actually made Spinks more afraid as his dressing room was next to Tyson's. Spinks could hear Mike hitting the walls and realized he had poked the bear.

I am the same age as Tyson and thus grew up watching and attending his fights when I could. I was at the Trevor Burbik fight when he won the title. My friend and I had breakfast the day before the fight at the table next to him and a couple of his trainers at the Hilton hotel in Vegas and we spent a few minutes talking to him. Mike was a busy guy and could have brushed us off but Mike understood that those couple of minuets meant the world to us. Mike was a class act to me and my friend and they even payed for our breakfast. I also attended the fight in Atlantic City when he went up against Michael Spinks. What an amazing fighter he was and I will never forget the few minuets of his life he spent talking to us.

I was in my late teens and early twenties, when Mike Tyson came on the scene. He was an incredible wrecking machine. I never missed a match. Then Don King got ahold of him and he was never the same again. He had discipline and focus before Don King...and he just turned into a sad has been afterwards. It wasn't Mikes fault, he was a kid with way too much money and no mentors to keep him on the straight and narrow. Mike Tyson has grown tremendously in recent years and now realizes exactly who he was then and what happened to him and where he went wrong. I believe he's training boxers now. You can teach somebody how to box, you might even be genetically gifted, But that fierceness can't be taught...you either have it or you don't.

The weird thing is I don’t think he was naturally fierce. He became fierce as a defence mechanism from being continuously bullied as a kid. Cus then trained him to be even more ferocious and Mike just wanted to make his father figure proud.

He was the most humble guy as far as past boxers he idolized. He would always say his heroes would have beat him and he'll never be as good as them, but in his prime no one would have beat him. Ali, Dempsey, Marciano and all the others he idolized would never have beat him. He was the most powerful heavyweight of all time but he boxed like a featherweight. He was just so much faster than everyone, he was almost unhittable in a weight class that really was just about trading blows. I still think he was innocent on his prison sentence.

But, when you say going to prison for three years for something you didn't do and regain both belts the year after his release isn't adversity, I have to ask, what is your definition of adversity? Father left at two years old, mom I believe was a prostitute who died when he was 16, no one is exactly sure who is Dad was but it's narrowed down to a cab driver and a pimp. He went to bed hungry most nights in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods of all time until he was taken in by an old man and plenty more situations most would call adversities. Also, yeah, Mike Tyson had demons throughout his boxing career, but it got the best of his after his competitive boxing career until he retired.
I'd say he has really overcome those demons, and become a relaxed, and genuinely nice guy in the past 10-15 years! He had a podcast, a TV show, and other things since his retirement from boxing. He's still boxing to stay fit, and he's still ripped for being 57 y/o!

I feel so bad for Mike going to jail for something that wasn't true. Even the jurors said they didn't believe he was guilty they had to go by what his lawyers were presenting as evidence. So they had to convince them. The girl that accused him basically didn't want her parents to know that she was sexually active and this is like the third or fourth account of her saying was she was taken advantage of.

Back in the summer of 1986 I was in the Air Force stationed at Nellis, AFB in Las Vegas, NV. My roommate came home from grocery shopping at an Albertsons near our apt. and mentioned something about a big scary guy leaning on his car when he came out of the store. Charlie expected trouble, but the guy apologized and jogged off. A month or so later the news was on and Charlie pointed at the TV and yelled "That's him!" It turns out it was Mike Tyson who was out for a run and stopped for a rest on his car. A few months later he beat Trevor Berbick for the world championship at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Mike Tyson is my favorite heavyweight of all time. From 85-89 he was undefeated with a record of 37-0 and became the youngest heavyweight champion ever, unifying all 3 belts. He took down much bigger men some as large as 6’6” tall, nobody could beat Iron Mike in his prime. Sadly when his trainer Kevin Rooney left in 1988, he wasn’t the same fighter as years moved on thanks to Don King… Mike had a lot of bad people in his life starting in 88/89 and he was partying and not training the same anymore leading up to him losing to Buster Douglas in 1990. 1990 and on Mike Tyson was a different, slower fighter just relying on his power. Prime Mike in 85-88 with Kevin Rooney in his corner was elusive, fast, and devastating and I would bet money on that version of Mike Tyson beating any other heavyweight boxer in history.
Any other fighter in history 🤣 no version of Mike Tyson beats Lennox Lewis. Tyson was exciting when he was the bully knocking over tomato cans. When it got tough he quit. Who did he beat that was elite? The best names on his record are a way over the hill old man in Larry Holmes & a light heavyweight who was visibly scared to death in Michael Spinks. He lost every elite fight he fought in most badly. Tyson exciting yes but overrated. His record isn’t close to Lennox Lewis’s

He remained on the move, kept his head swiveling and EVERY punch he did was to knock you out. People know him for his ability to attack, get in the pocket and knock out... but he had one of the best defense ive ever seen too.
its not just that he hit with so much force due to his strength and speed, which some have claimed to be at around 1800 lbs of force..which is something like falling from 2 meters onto pavement..but watch him..he doesn't stand 'toe-to-toe' throwing punches down the pipe...he throws from angles, from the sides...you just don't see where its coming from until its too late - IF you do
I was never sure of his force, but 1800 sounds pheasable for him. What also astounded me was he wasn't some gargantuan guy. He was solid, but he was only 5'10. He wasn't build like a bodybuilder or anything, just really well toned looking.

I think that 20 year old Mike Tyson might be the most physically formidable human that ever lived. Almost all people were smaller, weaker, and malnourished before a century ago so it's reasonable to suspect that he literally holds that title.

When Tyson came out to fight Spinks, he didn’t have music, just the sounds of howling wind and rattling chains. You’ll notice instead of a wearing a robe, Tyson entered the arena dressed to fight in his shorts. Before the fight, he had been beating the wall of his locker room because he new Spinks was on the other side and could hear the power of Tyson’s punches. That fight was over before it began.

Opponents are still feeling Tyson's body punches 20 years later. And NO man is invincible.
I watched Tyson fight several times, and he had so much power that if he caught you with one shot, it was over, and it didn't matter how big and tuff the opponent was

I think you would really enjoy watching the story of Lawrence Taylor arguably the best linebacker ever in American football. It’s a really wild one. And I wouldn’t let the kids as much as I love them too, watching it. He literally changed how football had to be played.
LT was the best defensive player of all time -- not just linebacker. Teams had to game plan specifically for him because he could singlehandedly wreck an opposing QB. Phenomenal player.

Mike Tyson has really become a great guy in my opinion. Self aware of his faults from the past and the present and it’s really cool to see him talk these days bc he’s a total 180 from the bad old days.
Mike Tyson was actually very small for a heavyweight. He was 5' 11" tall, and weighed 218 to 220 pounds. Compared to the heavyweights of today, he was tiny. However, as everyone who watched Tyson could see, he was a concussive puncher. Ali was 6' 3" and 212 to 220 pounds. Ali was a large fighter for his era.

Watching Mike Tyson boxing is quite frightening at times. The power of his punches is on another level. At times im anticipating a catastrophic implosion and always seem to feel the aftershock of his blows to his opponents through the screen. 😂😂😂😂
Tyson was known for overwhelming his opponents right from the bell. His amazing "Peek-A-Boo" style of boxing was simultaneously on offense and defense. The technique was developed decades before in the 1950s by World Champion boxer Floyd Patterson and his coach Custer "Cus" D'Amato. Thirty years later in the twilight of his life, D'Amato trained Tyson and gifted Tyson with the knowledge of the fighting style. Coach/Dad Cus D'Amato had hundreds of hard to find tapes(well before internet of coarse) of old-school high level boxers that Tyson would use to study endlessly. As a result, young Micheal would grow to idolize several of these champions-of-old, but perhaps none more than the Iconic 1919 Champion Jack Dempsey. Tyson wanted to be like Dempsey. This is the reason young Mike wore black shoes with no socks and black trunks, had his hair styled in a military "fade" style haircut and didn't wear robes or any flashy outfits on fight-night---exactly like the "Manassa Mauler", Jack Dempsey. Mike even mimicked Dempsey's boxing style and demeaner as Dempsey would ferociously attack from the bell and try to smother and intimidate his opponents right off. Dempsey would turn his hips and use his legs to twist into the punches effectively using all his bodyweight to generate maximum force to smash his opponent's faces-Tyson did exactly THIS as well.
Mike Tyson's Rape case has come under high suspicion in the more recent years since. A large percentage of the public now believes he is innocent and was wrongly convicted, a theory that has a lot of supporting evidence although at the time of his trial most thought him guilty and didn't bother to question the narrative they were being fed. Some even think he was set-up by powerful rich elites who lorded over boxing and needed him gone to re-ignite receding interest in the sport and regain limited control of who wins and loses and who fights who. The woman in question had previously accused other prominent men of sexual assault in the recent past-- a massive detail that was not mentioned in the courtroom at the time of his trial.

Indeed. I was at NTC (National Training Center) when he fought Buster Douglas. Since we were out in the field, we heard through the grapevine that Tyson had lost. Every one of us thought it was a BS practical joke until we returned to the rear a couple of weeks later. There are few sports results that are as shocking as that. Having never watched that fight, I didn't realize the extended 10 count that ultimately gave Douglas another chance. Oh, and screw Don King.

I grew up in Louisville, home of the great Ali, and Tyson is hands down my favorite boxer. Tyson is 1a and Ali is 1b. I've watched Tyson from the beginning to now. To see his growth as a human is amazing. His story is one to definitely look in to.

How is it not suitable for kids? For kids to know about Mike Tyson and to be educated on how he grew up and how tough it was for a person like that to make it, I think it's a good thing to show anyone no matter the age.. one of the greatest icons of all time who overcame challenges and achieved greatness.
You have to consider. They go into the video blind. So they were probably thinking the the actually fights would be to brutal for the kids to handle.
It a parents call based on what they think their kids can mentally handle. When I was their kids' ages,I wasn't allowed to watch the fights. It was for adults. But, When I was old enough, more in my teens, I watched replays and such of Tyson fights.

Present day interviews of Mike Tyson show the redemption and wisdom he has gained over the years. As a young man he was not an example to follow but today he stacks up well against anyone as a family man with love, integrity and the vision of a sage.
There is a difference between a fighter boxing and a boxer boxing and Tyson was a fighter and basically unmatched in the ring during the mid eighties and late eighties. The hardest fight that Mike had to deal with was himself and he went through his own trials but he was able to come back from it and continue his life.
Thanks for posting this video - was enjoyable watching you both. As Tyson has aged, he has tried to be a better person - improve his character. Some of the most interesting interviews with him are the recent ones, where he reflects back on his life. I always thought his autobiography should be called something like: "Somewhere between Heaven and Hell." He has had one roller coaster of a life. Very interesting guy. I hope you continue to watch videos of him. Thanks for posting this one.

I watched every fight he had back in the day. I even watched his amateur fights on bootleg tapes i bought. When his fights were televised, most other things stopped. Everyone knew he was a legend in the making. He was the master of brutal artistry. He was a true force of nature, and everyone saw it.
Unfortunately, he met robin givens and he started a downhill slide. Her and her mother ruined mike tysons whole run on the sport.
Btw, when mike fought larry holmes, it was due to a promise mike made to muhammad ali to aveng his loss to holmes years earlier. Thats why it looked like mike was trying to punish him, because he truly was punishing him in ali’s name.

Hey Kiwis! Glad you enjoyed the (partial) story about Mike Tyson. Had Cus D'Amato lived for another 5+/- years and was able to be Tyson's rock, there's no question in my mind that Tyson wouldn't have had his eventual slide (when he shockingly lost to Buster Douglas in Japan) during his boxing career. In fact, Tyson had SUCH a close bond and love for Cus, that when Cus died, that's when Tyson went off the rails (e.g. partying too much, women galore, etc.), and he consequently got sloppy. But for that early-to-mid part of Tyson's boxing career, I've never witnessed any heavyweight (including Ali) who captivated soooooo many people as Tyson did, because of HOW downright dominant Iron Mike was.
