"A Slow Genocide of the People": Uranium Mining Leaves Toxic Nuclear Legacy on Indigenous Land

  • www.democracyno... - The iconic Grand Canyon is the site of a battle over toxic uranium mining. Last year, a company called Energy Fuels Resources was given federal approval to reopen a mine six miles from the Grand Canyon's popular South Rim entrance. A coalition of Native and environmental groups have protested the decision, saying uranium mining could strain scarce water sources and pose serious health effects. Diné (Navajo) tribal lands are littered with abandoned uranium mines. From 1944 to 1986, 3.9 million tons of uranium ore were chiseled and blasted from the mountains and plains of the region. More than 1,000 mines have closed, but the mining companies never properly disposed of their radioactive waste piles, leading to a spike in cancer rates and other health ailments. Broadcasting from Flagstaff, Arizona, we speak with Taylor McKinnon, director of energy with Grand Canyon Trust, and Klee Benally, a Diné (Navajo) activist and musician. "It's really a slow genocide of the people, not just indigenous people of this region, but it's estimated that there are over 10 million people who are residing within 50 miles of abandoned uranium mines," Benally says. Benally also describes the struggle to preserve the San Francisco Peaks, an area considered sacred by 13 Native tribes, where the Snowbowl ski resort is using treated sewage water to make snow.

Thank you for bringing this to peoples attention. I think that very few Americans are aware of this problem, and bring it up briefly in one of my videos. It is such a shame that these corporations run our governments, and I have videos dealing with that too.

People are just so disconnected on where the stuff comes from to make modern life work. The Indigenous have always been right about western culture.

i don't want to be harsh on renewable energy.
But know this allmost all energy including renewables have a devastating impact on the environment, since rare earths are required for wind turbines and solar panels.
I am in no way supporting the mining industry every mining proces including uranium mining should be conducted in a way that has the least impact on the overall environment.

navylaks2 too late this uranium mining has caused genetic problem and esp Cancer and Neuralgia-this will take 100years or more to clean up and the indigenous people here have went 78plus years without having water! Leaving 3000abandoned open pit uranium mines on native lands was done on purpose! The government did this!! When you use solar and wind it doesn’t hurt the environment! Coal is a dead resource,JCpenny makes more profit than all the coal cos combined...and that’s not much. You should see how much worse the uranium contamination is today in 2018! It’s time to use all the sun and wind and natural resources that are abundant and also honor the tribes wishes!!!

Maybe so but renewables don’t do this much damage. Open your eyes and take the peanut butter out of your ears.

We will heal the land and the hearts. It is happening!! ✊
Remember that this affects all lives, not just Natives. We are all responsible to protect our planet and future generations.

Nuclear energy is our best environmental approach to fixing our energy system. If mining is a big issue, let's repsosses what we already mined!

Leona Morgan is passionate about Navajo AUMs. Klee Benally is passionate about protecting the San Francisco Peak. IMO, Leona would have provided a more factually based response. But, good job, Klee. Thanks.
