My friend and I played this every Wednesday at his house at lunch time during Grade 4. Never could get past the Minotaur. The message about the Dagger of Death taunted us and is forever locked into my memory. "The Dagger of Death is a special kind. When used on the Minotaur it weakens his mind."
This was such a great game... I played this 10 years before MUDs really came out in the advent of Internet. Master of Magic was really ahead of it's time. I didn't realize at the time the vampire could be killed with the wooden dagger so easily.. but you could beat him also otherwise.
Killing the vampire with the wooden dagger is one of those things that only makes sense when you see it. The whole 'stake to the heart' thing never occurred to me.
Ha. I remember this. Never could get past the vampire. I did figure out that a wooden dagger is the right kind of weapon to fight him with, but somehow he just pretty much instantly killed me every single time anyway. Then I got bored, but every once in a while I would still load it just to listen to the awesome music :)
Orchestra based remakes sound pretty good: th-cam.com/video/Ui0iDXzrHlc/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/9cER6e8iudg/w-d-xo.html And this one sounds great too: th-cam.com/video/CQxaXZ1CBaM/w-d-xo.html I remember I had a remix maybe 10 years ago, but forgot the bands name made it (and could not find it on YT)
For years I’ve been trying to figure out what this game was. I had it when I was a kid.. never made it past the first enemy (I was like 6). The music and the walking dot was all I could remember lol. I always though it was Pool of Radiance, but obviously I was wrong.
same. I forgot the name and only just saw it in another video and thought "OMG - that's the one I've been looking for". Never completed it as a kid and am amazed it only takes 20mins to get through.
I never played this, but the music instantly reminded me of "Spellbound" and "Zoids", that also have real great in-game-music and athmosphere. And of course it's Rob Hubbard.
Man, I played this game for hours, always taken out by the vampire, even using the dagger. Nice playback, and yeah just to listen to the music was great. Thanks for the recap...wonder if that was L. R. Hubbard who made the music?
@Pamela May To say that he 'stole it' is perhaps a little strong..... hr sampled it and re-imagined it without consent from the original publisher (as far as we know) but that was quite common back in those days....
I've been trying to find this game forever but I forgot the name. Remembered it was some sort of cave game with amazing music. Can't believe it only takes 20mins to get through - I'm pretty sure I never completed it as a kid.
I remember seeing this for sale at the computer store when I was a kid. I wanted to buy it, but it always seemed a little too intimidating. Now I see that the game would have kicked my ass from here to next Thursday.
Not one of my favorite games (although I did like it), but certainly in my top 15 for the awesome music from Rob Hubbard. One of my favorite all time C64 BGM sids
Some commentary would be nice. You know, in which order you take on which enemies and why, what the things you pick up do and how to deal with which creature and such.
@Groome007 You completed it? I always died using the wooden dagger on the vampire and never beat the minotaur. Even tried to put the amulet on the pedestal before dieing. How did you do it? (I finally beat it using an emulator and cheat program.)
That was a different way of completing it from what we used to do. If you go and aggro the Minotaur and run out and up at the teleport, the Minotaur runs forward into the teleport and poof! You just had to hope that you did not run into him again on your way back. No need to kill anything with that tactic really =)
The DOS Master of Magic wasn't a reboot, but an entirely different turn-based strategy game. I played both, and both were great games, but had nothing to do with one another.
What a curious little game I've never heard of, I had an Apple II growing up but C64 had some wild games. I was looking for let's plays of the SimTex Master of Magic game and came across this. This Master of Magic seems to be an unusual combination of dungeon crawler and text-based adventure-RPG. Pretty crazy! (Kind of an underwhelming finale though lol)
Nothing in this game is original, though. This is basically just a colorful version of Rogue (1980). The game has the Minotaur and the Amulet of Yendor - I mean Immortality. Just with a static dungeon. And of course, Rogue is just a slightly modified copy of D&D... And the music is also almost an 1:1 copy of "Shibolet" by Synergy (Larry Fast), 1981. Did Rob have a permission to use it?
After all these years, I still find the music outstanding, f***ing awesome!
M. Steini the soundtrack is a re-imagining of the track Shibolet by Synergy, taken to new heights with the SID by Rob Hubbard
It still floors me too. I just love the flow of it. It's realy wicked!
Yeah I still listen to it. Amazing and mysterious. That's why I'm here now. :)
listening to it now 10 years later - still rocks
@@patsfan4life He took the best parts of that track and rearranged it perfectly...
Rob Hubbard was the master of using ring modulation in his music. Also love how the triangle wave sounds in this.
This game was quite ahead of its time... Played it with a friend for days.

My cousin got this game one year for Christmas and I used to beg him to play it just so I could sit and listen to the music. :)
What a wonderful game! And what a musical score it has!

Possibly one of the best music pieces on the C64... and several other gaming systems for that matter.

Without a doubt one of my favs on C64...just sooo good and detailed. Still gives me goosebumps. I love it that others like it too.
Thank you for posting this. I loved this game, but I could never manage to defeat the Vampire. He always beat me every time.
Never was I able to complete this game. I feel relieved now that I have seen some one completing it.
I was rubbish at this game, but that music... beautiful. Great video :)
the music alone makes me play this game at least one time a year....

You Killed It! Rob Hubbard, the master!
all the delicious chocolaty goodness of Dungeons & Dragons in one easy to enjoy morsel! Loved this game back in the day.
This music needs an official remix, I swear! It's almost tear inducing due to its beauty!
Not a remix, but this is what it's based on: th-cam.com/video/rfxcreFEowE/w-d-xo.html

I always thought this game was cool... Completed it many times as a youngster ... Always loved that trippy music :D

darkrider318 lol Rob Hubbard not L. Ron
@@patsfan4life Both believed that the impossible was possible, but only the musical magician convinced right thinking folk that he was correct.
Wooden dagger. That's why I could never beat the vampire.
Music is fantastic.
Seems so obvious now, doesn't it? It wasn't when I was 8, though. Lol
Rob Hubbard music I think.
Dave Dogge Yes, it is - this is my favorite among his tracks.
"A sharpened blade may not be best"

Great comment. Cheers . Hope all is well 6 years later from your comment bro!
I used to get battered 1-4 mins into the game and then it was always start all over again.
ditto!
Killing that minotaur with the 'dagger of death' was sooo cheap :D
I played this for hours as a kid! I beat it by running away from the minotaur and the vampire..
Good music
Qu'il était incroyable Rob Hubbard !
Used to love this game but never completed it. The vampire always got me in the end. Never could beat it or find something to defeat it.
Some commentary would be nice. You know, in which order you take on which enemies and why, what the things you pick up do and how to deal with which creature and such.
Never occurred to me before, but this game has no sound effects, only music (same with Conan for the most part.)
certainly one of Rob's best although learning today that yet another one he borrowed
Am I the only one who thought is was stupid when you put the Amulet of IMMORTALITY on, and the minotaur STILL killed you?
@Groome007 You completed it? I always died using the wooden dagger on the vampire and never beat the minotaur.
Even tried to put the amulet on the pedestal before dieing.

Has this game been rebooted since ?
John Warrington I think so, there was a DOS version years later.
+1300l I can only find that civilization type game with the name of Master of Magic for dos
Maggot
That's the reboot ;)

its been so long but i dont think i ever killed the minotaur . i just used to grab the amulet and run...

Rob reimagined it, was simply inspired by it…. the game will live on much longer than the original song would have on its own….
True, it's probably more known as the music of this game. But it's the same piece, almost note by note, within SID's limitations.
@@NiiloPaasivirta what limitations??
I used to think the graphics were really good on this game! 😂
This isn't the "Master of Magic" I was expecting. That's OK.
