The experience of this concerto has changed my life. I will no longer sit for hours at the desk in the office... from now I will sit for hours at the piano... look out world... here I come...
The Rach 2nd Symphony is a total emotional experience of heart-wrenching themes and musical development! The instrumental perfection of the writing is historic and leads one to know that Rach was always a piano composer. This symphony is not done as much as it should because we are in a kind of anti-romantic stage of classical music performance. Instead of realizing that the Rachmaninoff repertory will never die because all of his compositions are so accessible to so many, so heartfelt to even those who are not hard-core classical music lover, and so dramatic in the development of its themes. I find so much good in this realization of the symphony for piano and orchestra. Of course, the piano takes much of the instrumental perfection away from the performance, but it has its own perfection. You can almost hear the voice of Rachmaninoff commenting on his wonderfully perfect symphony in the piano part!!! You cannot spoil perfection!!!!! This symphony needs to continue to live in our symphony concert repertoire. If it takes this "piano arrangement" to do this, so be it!!!
What a beautiful Adagio movement, I had never heard this version of Rachmaninoff symphony 2 as a piano concerto, Thanks to Warenberg for facilitating this.
An incredibly demanding piece. I was not aware of a fifth concerto until now. A wonderfully accomplished pianist with exceptional musicianship. Beautiful. Thank you.
Fabulous music played by an amazing pianist, she has the incredible sensitivity that really touches us. Rachmaninoff is a composer who wrote magnificent masterpieces that are all of his piano concertos. Viva Sergei and his enchanting and grand music. Thanks for this remarkable interpretation.
I've been a fan of Rachmaninoff for rather a lot of years, and discovered Anna Fedorova through TH-cam about a year ago. But I hadn't heard of this work until tonight, when curiosity drove me to listen. I'm so glad I did. It is simply fascinating! Anna Fedorova showed her customary musical brilliance - she always seems able to deliver an abundance of talent, a healthy dose of charm, and pure musicality that puts her in the top echelons of her profession. And the orchestra were up to the challenge of a complex work that can hardly be described as one of the 'routine' or 'bread and butter' pieces with which they may be familiar. I once knew a gentleman called Warenburg, and it was that name, as much as anything, that caught my eye. He was someone quite different, I should add. This musicologist/composer has a rare talent of his own. He seemed able to get inside the mind of Rachmaninoff, and 'unpick' his beautiful 2nd symphony, and a few other pieces, it seems, almost as if he had become Rachmaninoff when he was creating the symphony, and working out the characteristic lines and harmonies that were his trademark. One can picture the master, slaving at his piano, trying this and that harmony; this and that sequence, until he 'distilled' just the right one when, with a satisfied flourish, perhaps, he would scribe it quickly on his manuscript, try it again just to be sure, and then complete the details: note length and pitch; chords and timing, before moving on to the next sequence. It was thus a masterclass, and worth every hour Mr Warenburg spent at the task. And it might even help us appreciate Rachmaninoff yet more, if that be possible...! Thank you Mr Warenburg, and thank you Miss Fedorova and TH-cam!
As always, Anna's delivery is beautifully exquisite! As a musical piece, this is a very interesting "what if". To those who are dissing it, keep in mind that Rachmaninoff's 2nd Symphony hasn't be exiled to Never Never Land and there is no reason to be critical of this work. Do you know how many versions there are of Musorsky's Night On Bald Mountain? They are all fascinating! It's quite alright for virtuoso''s like these musicians to "explore" Rachmaninoff's original concept. Step back, take a deep breath and appreciate it for the sincere tribute it is! BRAVO!!!!!!!
@@TheRonnos It is - but this recording seems to draw an inferior tone from the piano. I couldn't enjoy it, even though I really admire Anna Fedorova. And I do think that the orchestral version is richer.
I like you was not aware of a fifth concerto but what a beautiful job Anna makes of it. The arrangement of creating a second piece of music from a symphony and converting it in to a wonderful piece as this I take my hat of to arranger the musicians and most of all Anna Fedorova.
I didn't know this version as piano concerto of the 2nd symphony of the Master Rachmaninov! It's a great surprise! And the interpretation of Anna Fedorova is amazing as usual! Thanks for sharing!
Well, I have never heard this before, but you know who wrote this as it's typical Rachmanonov.... Anna played this beautifully... I will play this again and again I think - Thank you Anna

Fantastic piece and playing. FYI it’s not a Rach piece. Warenberg turned Rach’s 2nd symphony into a concerto. And I have the sheet music. It’s just as hard if not hard than Rach’s own piano writing. Wickedly difficult. Valentina Lisitsa also plays it.
It seems to be in fashion these days to make new arrangements of Rachmaninoff's music. The 2nd Elegique Piano Tro has been arranged as a piano concerto. The two suites for 2 pianos have been arranged for piano and orchestra and the Variations on a Theme of Corelli for piano solo have been arranged for orchestra sans piano. Resphigi with Rachmaninoff's blessing (and program notes) arranged 5 of the Etudes Tableau for symphony orchestra.

This is getting more popular than Rachmaninoff's 1st and 4th. Incredible that an arrangement of a symphony should attract no less than five major pianists eager to perform it in concert. Opening similar to the 3rd Concerto in that the main theme is played by unison notes an octave apart but it quickly departs into other territories. Warenberg must have done one hell of a job transcribing it judging by its popularity. It shows just how hungry people are for anything Rachmaninoff-piano-and-orchestra. It should also demonstrate to the music apparatchik running the industry that the public at large doesn't like all this atonal post modern stuff contemporary composers throw at them that gets one splashy premiere and then is completely forgotten. I hope they learn a lesson from this symphony cum concerto, but i doubt they will. Anna is brilliant as usual. I hope this gets as popular as her Rach 2nd Concerto. Thanks, Jacob for the link.
Yes, you're right, prof, it IS the purists dissing the concerto even though it is a 1st-class arrangement. Had it been done "on the cheap" then maybe she'd have a point w/ regard to the arrangement itself, but not in principle. Now just to digress slightly to make a point, I wrote a neo-romantic Piano Concerto No 2 in C Minor inspired by Rachmaninoff's own. Putting aside the fact mine in no way approaches the quality of Rachmaninoff's, I had one prominent conductor in the Southland who was kind enough to listen to it say, "Yes, it's beautiful and all, Mr Townley, but do we really need a Fifth Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto?" His point being, I suppose, that there is no room for a 5th Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto, even by Mr. Rachmaninoff himself.
Ho-Ho! Two men being snobbish about people being snobbish about this transcription! It's as valid as any popular transcription is - good of Warenberg to do this labour of love. As to it being more popular than the 1st or 4th - well they remain largely undiscovered, lurking behind the monoliths of the two Concerti they 'bookend'. I listened to the 1st this evening - a Zimerman version - and was reminded again of just how luscious this is. The 4th is something entirely different. I'm not sure, if all these three were being played in three concert halls built around a town square, which I'd elect to listen to. Perhaps this - because it's nuances aren't clear to me yet and neither is its validity. But I'm not finickey about SVR - I'll 'consume' almost everything he composed.
I follow several concert seasons and have never seen it programmed....not saying that it hasn't been, but.....without really trying, thru 2017, i heard, live, two Rach4's, three Rach1's, not counting the 2s, 3s & PagRaps! After WaringOut (!) its curiosity value and milking the $$$ of the gullible, pretentious fools, it'll thankfully die the death it deserves.
I pulled this up to play because I thought Rachmaninoff had only done four piano concertos. I'm not really sure what to make of this - it's more like a 'variation on...'
Plenty to learn from this pianist, conductor, and orchestra. The lesson might be, whomever you might be, at whatever endeavour, at whatever level, get busy: engage; reach; study; practice; achieve. Nothing changes if nothing changes.
Love this piano arrangement. If ever in any doubt, section 19.30-21.55 is a majestic homage and reminder of the great Symphony no.2. Always mesmerised by watching the pianist fingers performing the millions of notes, compared to only 3 chords in most rock & roll songs. Uploaded image is fraction of second ahead of sound: finger-work slightly ahead of sound.
Translating the symphony into a piano concerto is a questionable endeavor but labeling this the Rachmaninov 5th concerto is an example of fraud. Moreover, aping the 3rd concerto reeks of desperate commercialism.
Geweldig!
This piano arrangement by Warenberg is a great success and he has done indeed a lot of job! I have nothing more to add since the comments of “J J Townley Sometime-composer of Piano Concertos” are very well-aimed! I have literally my “brain washed” with this transcription so I can hardly tolerate the original version of the symphony but I do miss the second movement though. Technically the 5th concerto sounds as difficult as the 3rd one but Anna Fedorova’s interpretation is exquisite! Many many thanks for the link!
It's hack-quality. The aping of the 3rd concerto is so obvious and so absurd. It's also ridiculous to call this the Rachmaninov 5th concerto. For shame.
Thank you Etwas Bewegter for clearing this up for me. Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony is my favorite symphony. When I saw the piano on stage and heard it I thought my memory was going crazy as there was no piano on my record and I had the pleasure of attending the NY Philharmonic concert (from Philadelphia) just to hear this symphony and there was no piano. However, this performance I enjoy.
Wow...I just don't know about this arrangement. Anna is my favorite interpreter of Rachmoninoff...amazing. It's almost as though Warenberg said to himself, "let's throw piano into No. 2 as a showpiece for Anna". There are many wonderful moments...but many that are just not meant for busy piano...especially the adagio, arguably the most beautiful fifteen minutes ever written, which lost the tearjerking emotion of No. 2. But then this is a concerto not a symphony...hmmm. Just one mans opinion. I'll be watching for a better audio-visual version of this...

Thank you for posting this. I consider myself pretty well-versed in "classical" music, particularly Russian or German of the Romantic Period, but I admit I had never heard of this composition before now.
Because it's a fake. There is no Rachmaninov 5th concerto. Rachmaninov barely was able to get the 4th one done. He had to use melodies he had composed in 1915 (or so) in Russia and one of his friends, a conductor named Igor Buketoff, said the orchestration was below his level.
@@syrinx9196 It's not a "fake". No one ever claimed this to be anything else than what it is. An arrangement of the 2nd Symphony as a Piano Concerto by Alexander Warenberg. The idea came from the CEO of the record label Brilliant Classics, who pestered Warenberg until he gave in and created such an arrangement. Brilliant Classics than marketed it as a fifth Piano Concerto but was very open about what it is fom the very begining.
Rachmaninoff really was the last romantic composer. So many emotions in this piece. I wonder what Rachmaninoff would think if he had the chance to listen to this piece arranged for piano.....
An outstanding piano concerto. The Mr.Warenberg's arrangement of Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony is a masterpiece and is definitely rachmaninovian. Also an excellent performance by Ana Fedorova.
Liebe Anna!
New to me this piece I think, though some of it seemed familiar. Thank you Anna. You captured the essence of Rachmaninoff with your typically decided approach to it. Here and there, there were lovely moments. It was hard to hold together over all. I am not sure if I enjoyed it. But thank you both for the opportunity and experience. Cathy
I can't let to feel each performance of Anna as a heavenly moment. Especially when she plays Rachmaninov. It's just splendorous. And she is like an Angel 🌹🌹🌹💜
@@josephcrespo8193 Dana was an Irish singer in the 1970's. In 1976 she had a hit with a song called "Never going to fall in love again" the melody of this song was based on the 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony. Dana also had a Eurovision Song Contest hit with the song "All Kinds of Everything" in 1970. I believe her career has now changed more towards politics.
First time I heard this Warenberg thing. Not bad but I believe that Rachs 2ª symphony is a sufficiently great masterpiece in itself and any arrangements around it are just a waste of time. I'm not alone considering that Rachmaninoff was as great an orchestral composer than a pianist. All his symphonies and orchestral pieces (Isle of the dead and so on) are great pieces. He his known better by his piano compositions because he was perhaps the better (and the most expensive) pianist of his generation and the American hype helps a lot. Fedorova is great and fights her way along this mess bravely but I bet she lets go a sigh of relieve when finally gets to the end. I never enjoyed bizarre things like the "complete" 10th of Mahler or the 3rd of Elgar. Gives me the creeps. One of these days we will have to endure Mozart symphonies 42 to 50 made by some enthusiast.
Technical difficulty is not even close to musical quality in terms of importance. This sad jumble of the 2nd symphony and 3rd concerto should have been chucked in the bin.
Estupendo.

Anna has made Rachmaninoff very proud, indeed.

Mijn welgemeende admiratie voor uw talent. (Q;d Australia).
For shame.
What a lovely arrangement! for me the middle movement is particularly exquisite with piano, 19:30
Bravo Anna Federova, simply stunning playing.
excepcional pianista!!
as a showpiece for Anna".
This is lovely - first time I heard it. I love concertos 1-4 and have them on CD. Anna Fedorova is amazing - seen several of her performances!
** I loved this Warenberg's work. When I listened it , Rachmaninoff's music came in my mind . This piano concerto really looks like Rachmaninoff. Warenberg didn't forget to put a beautiful cadenza in the first moviment and that's also why really the piece has way of being of Rachmaninoff. Congratulation to Warenberg. ------ When it comes to Ana Fedorova, well, she was wonderful playing this piano concerto. I would like to play the piano like her. She was amazing and I don't get to understand like she gets remember all the notes of this new music in her mind! I think she is a genius! Ana Fedorova, you are a genius and a great pianist!

@@syrinx9196"Rachmaninoff could barely get the 4th out"? He had two fully completed versions of the fourth piano concerto prior to the 1941 version.
Great re-arrangement from the theme of the 2nd symphony.
Utterly breathtaking genius in every aspect. For me, Rachmaninoff is in a class of his own and does not fit into the acknowledged musical periods.
Rachmaninoff really was the last romantic composer. So many emotions in this piece. I wonder what Rachmaninoff would think if he had the chance to listen to this piece arranged for piano.....
I love Anna……applaud for the splendor of the strong touch and gentle touch 💕✨💖𝕋𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦 🎼🍷.•*¨*•.¸¸♬🎶•*¨🍇*•.¸¸♬•*¨*•.¸¸♪✨💓❤💕💓❤💕
Anna Fedorova. Extraordinary as usual!
Anna !!! My new faev !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Modern audiences long for anything beautiful in this atonal world
An outstanding piano concerto. The Mr.Warenberg's arrangement of Rachmaninov's 2nd symphony is a masterpiece and is definitely rachmaninovian. Also an excellent performance by Ana Fedorova.
First movement Wonderful, Second movement celestial !!! 3rd movent .......
now recalling adagio from symphony 2 also to say, thank you ! la ofunam resulta la mejor de México !
Liebe Anna!

Pianists, orchestras and conductors are all good.
If I heard this before, I have no recollection of it. Then there is a lot of music I have forgotten. I found this a delightful listen. I enjoyed it.
"Never fall in love again"? I just did!!
Like your Pun, You must remember DANA !!
@@frankc7254 sorry, I don't. DANA who?
@@josephcrespo8193 Dana was an Irish singer in the 1970's. In 1976 she had a hit with a song called "Never going to fall in love again" the melody of this song was based on the 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony. Dana also had a Eurovision Song Contest hit with the song "All Kinds of Everything" in 1970. I believe her career has now changed more towards politics.
@@frankc7254 Thanks. Very nice of you to reply.
I owe Eric Carmen, because of those 2 songs ("All by myself" and "Never gonna fall in love again") he introduced me to the great Rachmaninoff.
Epic and fantastic performance .
Amazing! Bravo!
¡¡¡ So beautiful!!! ¡¡!So wonderful!!!
Anna Fedorova hace mejor este mundo.
No musical expert but that sure looked more technically difficult than her Rach 2 performance that's gotten 13 million views.
Technical difficulty is not even close to musical quality in terms of importance. This sad jumble of the 2nd symphony and 3rd concerto should have been chucked in the bin.
Syrinx This sad commenter should have been chucked in the bin.
Guys, if you don't mind, I will marry this woman. She's amazing.
Music is the food of the soul

Estupendo.

Outstanding. I guess if you put Fedorova's name on the title you'll get more views.
this is true! I was surprised to find Fedorovna playing as I skipped forward to see who the pianist was!
the piano sound like an intruder into a great symphony
