When I met Steve Reich, he had just finished recording this piece. He set up two speakers, sat down in front of us,(not four feet away) and listened to the entirety of the piece with all of us. It was one of the most amazing and beautiful moments of my life. Afterwards, Steve spent hours discussing all he had done and answered all of our questions. I love Steve Reich not only for his contribution to the music world as a creator, but also because is the true definition of an artist - which to me means not just one who inspires but one who also teaches. Thank you, my teacher, Steve Reich.

This piece was premiered in my hometown of Manchester (UK) in the velodrome on July 2nd 2009. I got permission (kind of) to get my boy, Galen Reich (16), out of high school early and we travelled up for four hours by train from where I live now in West Norfolk up to Manchester. I've been a lifelong fan of Steve Reich and also Kraftwerk (main act), so it was a dream ticket. It was amazing when the Olympic cycling team of GB did tours of the velodrome to "Tour de France" but for me, the most amazing experience was hearing 2x5. Unforgettable.

No doubt about it - this is Reich's most rhythmic piece ever !! The musicians are enthusiastic yet concentrated beyond everyhing, and they really enjoy playing. I especially admire this ensemble and their way of interpreting Steve Reich. On the whole, it's amazing how manifold Reich's music is, over the years he has produced such a variety within his unique style. To me, he is the greatest composer living, a truly innovative artist !

It's scored for either 2 quintets (2x 1 piano, 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drum) playing live or 1 quintet playing with a recording. This group has 2 pianos, 2 guitars, 1 drum, and 1 bass, so it would appear they are playing along with a tape that has the other drum, 2 guitars, and bass.

Viewing and hearing this never fails to delight. I'm thinking...if there was a fMRI was done on people listening to this, they heads would be lighting up like some kind of nebula or something. Not that brain and mind are equivalent of course, just a tracing like a cloud chamber or something like that. (Though tangentially, I have at times had concern that my brain's reward center might blow like a fuse or something. The ads at mid-point might have actually come just in time.) Dang, I love this piece, and this performance. Thank you!

Great individual performances here but esp super cute Vicki Chow, who seems judging from YT a kind of serial music specialist. Watch her solo thing begin around 3:57, she sits up, starts bobbing her head side to side and playing really with her elbows pointing out, kind of bouncing and flaying the keyboard. Out with classic technique at! Tosses her head with the syncopation, gets her entire body involved, magnetic presence she has, total immersion.

I was trying to figure out what was going on there. This is my first time hearing this piece. As a drummer, and a fan of music like this, the backing track just sounds very non-musical and nauseating. I've heard plenty of avant-garde fringe music, but that backing track is unpleasant to listen to. A piece of music being difficult to play live isn't an excuse for butchering it live.
