I guess the plan was Olmar injures king's men, then dies to king's men. But Olmar still needs to "pay", and so Ketil is forced to give his assets to Canute
maybe it was explained in the manga, I forget.

Basically, yeah. Olmar kills guy, the rest of the guy's friends kill Olmar and live, then the guards come and the surviving King's guard that killed Olmar testify about his "crime" to indict Ketil and steal his farm

Askeladd isn't much better, he openly admits that and considering Askeladd forced upon Canute to kill him or be willing to make sneaky sacrifices no matter what to rise up it's not weird that this warped his methods to get to his goals, besides the curse of the crown.

@@ThinkAlienly Askeladd would kill for Canute, but I don't think he'd like to see Canute become more of a brutal king, especially toward the end of season one... Askeladd gave Atli some gold and told him to raise some sheep and live a peaceful life away from war. Maybe because Askleadd saw that Atli was not made for war, unlike his brother, and he'd advise Canute something similar, to my mind. He even told Thorfinn to do something better with his life as he was drawing his last breath.
Regardless of his brutality, Askeladd has a soft spot for good people. And to see Canute go that route would make Askeladd, at least, have a word with him.
