What if the root ball is a big white mass

Spray any remaining soil to loosen it, and let it soak it in a wheelbarrow. Pull and wiggle it. Maybe cut a root or two to unlock the tangle. But they eventually can be pulled apart, if there's all hosta in that big white mass.
