    A great review indeed. SNCF (and all European carriers in general) should strive to make high speed trains as well as normal trains budget friendly. Not only will the trains compete with Road and Air more fiercely but also provide the pleasure of Rail travel to the masses. Trains are highly eco friendly when compared to their opponents which means that if more people take the train, the lesser carbon footprint they have!

      Yeah, I agree with you on that. However, I think that the Railway companies can employ out of the box solutions for generating more revenue yet keep the prices low and they would not have to cramp passengers like sardines.

    I dont understand why some countries have something like "security lanes" or "boarding" on their trains.
    For me as a german that feels akward.
    If i want to board an ICE, i just go to the platform, and step in the train when it arrives. Even if i dont want to board that train i can just go to the platform and just hang around there.
    Having security like in a plane just kills the advantage of a train imho.
    In a german train station everyone is free to walk around to every platform.
    And why not? Whats the point of those "security" checks? If someone wants to blow up a train he can do it anyway, or just pick an even more filled commuter train. Stupid habit of some countries.
    HighSpeedTrain should not have someting like "boarding", to make it competetive against airplanes it needs to be like a regional train, just faster.
    Waiting 20min to board a HST is just ridicolous, and kills all the advantage of HST.

      I get your point of view and I also felt unsure about the gates before they installed them. But in the end I think they're really usefull because of how easy you control your ticket and board the train. Also it's not a "security check" like in airports. It's just ticket control, you scan your phone and get to enter the right platform. I take the TGV a lot and I've never waited more than 5 min to go through the gates. It helps prevent people boarding trains without ticket as well as regulating flows of people on platforms.
      For Ouigo the process is different though, there's indeed a "boarding" process and you need to be there at least 30 mins before departure. I guess it's a sacrifice to make for a cheap ride.

    • @MaartenOtto
      @MaartenOtto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In some cases it’s mandatory by the authorities or specific rail corridors like the channel tunnel for example. In Spain for example you go through a security check because not all countries are as safe as Germany. There are plenty of countries that have high speed rail but also have some nasty political factions...
      The fact you can board an ICE in Germany without any check whatsoever actually is an oddity, enjoy it while it lasts.

    • @Seathal
      @Seathal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spain doesn't have any internal political factions that'd blow up a train. ETA finished their activities 20 years ago. Anyways, Spain High Speed is a segregated network and either has dedicated stations or parts of stations separated from the commuters and regional services. Controls are quick, and not as intensive as in the airplanes. That combined with the fact it actually gets you from downtown Madrid to downtown Barcelona (for instance) makes you not have to commute from and to the respective airports shaving around 1.30/2h from the total trip downtown to downtown even if the trip itself takes more time in the AVE (3h + 10 minutes in the checking) than the plane (45 minutes checking and boarding, 10 minutes taxing, 1h20min in flight, 20 minutes deplaning, 1h commuting in/out from the airport at minimum... when there's delays, or overcrowding, or a storm add anywhere from 20-30 minutes to hours of delays). In the end the high speed train will always be more competitive and functional when the distance is inferior to 700km if there's a good HS service between the cities (Europe).

    • @CityWhisperer
      @CityWhisperer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They are not useless. It's to protect people and to avoid things like the 2015 Thalys terrorist attack. By the way, they are way faster than on airports, personal experience.

      @FA-tp3pq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maarten Otto it is for security (like in the Airports) and to make a more confortable jourmey as you are showing the train ticket before going into the train, in the plataform only you can find the train passengers; finally this system is faster.

      @@vintagetriplex3728: You've pretty much made my point for me(!) Forget low cost - trains (as well as buses, coaches, airplanes etc.) are public transport, and the aim is to have each train as filled (and/or profitable!) as possible. If you truly expect (rather than just desire) to be isolated, you may as well take your own car, and then you have to deal with the downsides which come with it, and while you may have that moment where you sigh inside when you see your train packed, if there wasn't the demand then there wouldn't be a train in the first place (as if the whole network is run as a heritage line for you!)

    I like the color scheme of the TGV OuiGo very much. That ocean-blue basic color of the French version fits perfectly to the LGV Mediterrannée, which your train used in this video. The ocean-blue also looks good with the black on the locomotives (motrices) in between. The pink and blue OUIGO circle logos also look interesting. The Spanish TGV OuiGo version is also nice, replacing the ocean-blue by a white basic color.

That a shame bc TGV sud est were fully refurbished 5 years ago and the confort is incredible, way better than first TGV Duplex who the interior remain the same since 1996. There was a time SNCF had a monopoly on long distance ground travel in france. EU legislation in part introduced by the French government deemed that to be unlawfull and not good for competition and the taxpayer/passenger. So it now became possible for companies like Flixbus to start operating in competition to SNCF. What the rail company did was a move to introduce a very limited and restricted low budget train offering to not compete in their own market but make sure passengers who otherwise would travel by bus were still in their trains.
      You would also find Ouigo does not use any mainline station in France other then where it is absolutely not possible otherwise. Lyon for example is served via the airport station on the LGV, as is Lille. On top of that, Ouigo is primarily using unpopular times and generally against the general traffic flow of regular TGV’s.
      Eurotunnel did the same with MyFerryLink between Calais and Dover competing against their own train operation but also picking customers from PNO and DFDS. By doing so the money stayed in the company rather then the competition.

    Well, since the price for ouigo between Paris and Lyon is just 10€, and the TGV price is 75€, why doesn’t everyone just use ouigo? Is the difference of 65€ worth the extra comfort of the TGV?

    • @joriss5
      @joriss5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's unusual that the price difference is so big. At peak periods the Ouigo prices increase a lot.
      It's also the frequency (some people don't use the Ouigo because the timetable doesn't fit while regular TGVs are more frequent), and the flexibility (business travellers usually need it and don't take Ouigo).
      Finally, Ouigo tickets are not sold with changes to other trains, and they do not serve all stations.

They say that you have to be there 30 minutes before boarding time because the boarding process is done manually by staffs due to luggage restrictions, and Ouigo trains are usually crowded so that the waiting line is very long. It takes a lot of time for boarding, unlike the normal TGV. Boarding closes 5 minutes before departure for Ouigo, and 2 minutes for normal TGV.

      Because this coach was built for first class, with a 1+2 layout. The floor is lower in the aisle (which is not in the center) than under the seats (to fit cables and ducts). When the coaches were converted for Ouigo, they did not modify the floor so they had to do with the aisle not in the middle. This was the only option to fit 4 seats row.

    I never understood why SNCF makes it so damn complicated to get on a train - usually you go to the station look at the track and get it - in France you have to wait for the track to be announced 20 mins before departure, go trough boarding gates and you can’t board the train a few minutes before the actual departure.... this kinda Looses the advantage that trains have over planes

    • @justyanns9167
      @justyanns9167 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think SNCF increased security checks before bording trains since the terrorist attacks of 2015. Don't forget France is still highly under terrorism threat
      Also, outside of Paris, access to the platforms is only restricted for trains going to Paris.

    • @jeeeyjey
      @jeeeyjey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      JustYanns hmmm I remember taking a TGV back in 2014 and you did not have security checks but still a troublesome boarding process

    • @vakane
      @vakane 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand your point and me too i'm not very happy whith boarding gate, but there also meaning behind it.
      The delay of 20 min in the big station is meant to have some margin. Platform can be change before 20 min while no waiting passenger know it. When the track is announced really 20 min in advance, it is really enough. In big station you have no interest to announced a platform 2 hour in advance and have a lot of people who will go there and boarding the precedent train of the track by error, or who will slow the mouvement of the passanger of this precedent train. The goal is to manage the flows of people. I don't how efficient it is but the goal istself is understandable. In addition even when the train is already at station, you have often some time reserve for cleaning for exemple. But that's only in the big station, if you go into a small one there are no 20 min delay and all the train are announced on the screen.
      Some boarding gate where put in service with the terrorist attack. It was not a decision that SNCF take alone. In addition it allow to reduce fraud and non wanted people in aboard train like SDF. Consequence is that some problem don't enter in the train. For exemple, one time at Gare du Nord in my train, where you have no boarding gate, a SDF enter in the train and right before departure he has a ethylic coma. The case were complicated, even the pompier said that it was not safe to move him and it take a lot of time. it caused a lot of problem because in the most crowded hour and several train were delay. For SNCF if boarding gates were present, the SDF could have not go in the train and the train traffic would have been normal. Even in TGV it's was a problem sometimes. In some case like some TER or, for example, transilien at St Lazare station it has also improved regularity on departure. A few years ago all transilien patform in this station were free access. When it was time to close the doors because it is a suburban service, they were always people to block it because they just arrive. And whis the time the get in the train, new people arrive and block the doors whereas were not in time for the trains. And it can continue like this forever because they are always someone who just arrive and wanted to take the train. Now the boarding gate close when it's time for departure and it's easier to be on time for train.
      And lastly you unlike you write it, you can board a train few minutes before departure. On the departure screen, in big station the train disappears 2 min before departure but if you go on the right platform, the boarding gate and the doors close only for the departure. If it is not the time of departure, the conductor will let you pass.

    I've noticed that you seem to give a lot of leeway to sncf that you don't to other carriers but in general the trains in France are really good so good to be proud - that being said, that train looks horrible. It was dirty, too crowded, lack of power/usb and had a horrid airline style boarding process. On the upside, it is a 300kph less expensive option and the fact it was so incredible busy means its serving a purpose.

    @bibekanandahansda2926 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay. I've been watching TGVs here on TH-cam and everytime I just ask, "why can't they make their trains a bit WIDER???" If I remember, the Shinkansens have wider aisles even with 3+2 configuration. Wide enough to walk freely, without bumping seats and people's bodies. Seriously, just why?

    • @tjejojyj
      @tjejojyj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The width of trains is set by the loading gauge which is the cross section each carriage and locomotive must fit through. For legacy railways this cannot be changed.
      The Shinkansen was a new line so they could set a wider loading gauge because they started from scratch. Note however that Japan converted some of their 1067mm (3’6”) lines to the same standard gauge (1435mm, 4’8.5”) to connect with the Shinkansen but they have to use a smaller sized train on those routes because the loading gauge couldn’t also be increased.

    • @stanislavkostarnov2157
      @stanislavkostarnov2157 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      as a person who used to take the Shinkansen quite a lot, I can say that they are very different depending on the model, and still, quite often you have to stand if you are traveling on a non-reserved ticket (say Tokyowards from Sendai, or around the Osaka Kansai-region), in the mountains, some Shinkansens, like the Komachi, are very narrow, whilst some of the main ones with a 3+3 configuration are actually quite spacious... still, all Shinkansens are for speed... if you want comfort, I far prefer the next layer down of the classical express trains, they go only some 150km-200km (rather then at 330km), but have really good thought through spaces with regional color and a lot of personality... just a pleasure to be in.

      Pour moi les deux seuls problèmes de Ouigo sont:
      -pas de prises, ce qui est gênant en cas de manque de batterie, mais ça suffit d'être prévoyant et d'amener ses appareils électroniques chargés ou une batterie
      - la taille limitée des bagages: le vrai défaut selon moi, car ils limite forcement la durée du voyage. Après il y a un supplément possible pour son bagage, qui rend l'offre un peu moins intéressante mais toujours plus rentable que l'in oui classique.
      Question confort, oui ça pourrait être mieux, mais c'est largement acceptable pour un train dans lequel on ne passe jamais plus de trois heures.
