Trust me when I say that anyone who is watching this video is definetely "not bored." Don't apologize for teaching. :) As someone who just likes to plant without planning, this is a great video. Thankyou.

I'm a Master Gardener and have taken garden design courses before but this is the best explanation of how to start a plan that I have seen. I'm going to follow your process to revamp some of my spaces this year. So helpful! Especially love the practical aspects you incorporated in (wind screens, keeping a view of neighbor's trees, filling the low spots). In my earlier plans, it was always about the plants I wanted but I can see how your process will really help enhance what I've already started. Thank you for posting this!

This is so helpful and encouraging!!! Thank you!!! I feel overwhelmed. I am looking at a blank slate, which is good and bad. It is good because I can theoretically do many things, but it is bad because I do not know how to get started. Your video has helped me so much!! I love that you said think big but start small. Just talking about doing the site survey and then a site plan help to focus me on how to start. Getting started is so difficult if you are a total novice like myself. Thank you so much!! I look forward to screening more of your videos!! You are a wonderful teacher!! 😀

When I first started my total gardening immersion, I made the classic rookie error of buying 1 or 2 of every plant that caught my eye. I think it’s a right of passage! ....It took me about 2 years of trying in vain to make them all work before I dug every single one up to start again. A LOT of hard work but so worth it in the end. 😎

Oh boy, how I needed this one! I’ve designed several gardens I thought were acceptable but , once again, you’ve shown me an easier, smarter way! I could listen to you all day. You have a lovely presence! I’m loving this series! I have my platt and ready to get started. I’m 78 but still very active and can’t wait to actually get started. I’ll be a little slower getting it done but will try to keep up once we get to actually doing the work!

Brilliant and oh so practical! I love how you stressed that...towards the end. Initially, as beginners we are so excited but quickly overwhelm ourselves by stuffing a bunch of plants in hoping to create the beautiful space but totally forget to prioritize safety, structure, and practicality! And it helps that you have a calm and soothing tone. Thanks Yulia!

I am renovating a little cottage on the Baltic in Sweden and have spent the last couple of years renovating the cabin and the front garden. But the back yard is what I want to tackle and it is completely wild with an elevation and a lot of large diverse trees. So this design process is exactly what I was looking for. Excited.

A garden to me is an oasis of nature, a place to escape. This is different than a flower bed, like the front of most homes. A garden is usually away from the road, a place that you can sit surrounded by your favorite plants.
Thank you for talking about the water around the house. One mistake I made when designing my garden and flower beds was not thinking of the soil grade. We had recently bought the house and didn't realize how much standing water there was around the foundation because the soil had settled so much (despite all the downspouts being previously extended). Before planting or bringing in gravel, etc. it is really important to first bring the soil level up around the foundation. In my case, I had to go back and fix things after I already had everything in place. That made everything much more difficult.

    • @ydoyougarden
      @ydoyougarden  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, water can really damage the foundation. I actually had the same problem next to our kitchen and after we fixed it I planted some hollies and other plants knowing I can sleep peacefully at night 😁

Oh my gosh, this segment is GOLDEN! It was so simple, yet packed with valuable, helpful information for a homeowner to go about designing or redesigning their garden. I can see the magic of doing these steps. This is timely for me because we moved to a new state with
1 acre+ property. Because this will be my second garden from scratch, I know the pitfalls as a plant lover wanting to get to the doing of the planting. This video has helped encouraged me to draw things out. I can't wait to see more. Thank you again for all of your help!

It's very helpful to see someone else work out a rough drawing, that's all I can do, so I don't overthink the process. It doesn't have to be a finished product right off your first drawing. Just get something down to get started. Thank you Yuliya!

Last night, I found your garden design videos-parts 1-3-and stayed up until the wee hours of the morn watching them all. Thank you so much!!! I keep plants/flowers alive, but I’ve never designed a yard before. We purchased a new-to-us home 5 years ago, and I’ve spent the past 3 years UNxeriscaping it so that I could plant flowers.
With your encouragement, I spent hours this morning wandering through and sketching my garden/forest-just like you explained and am more excited than overwhelmed for the first time in years. Thank you!!!

Great video Yuliya! You are such a good teacher. I wish 8 yrs ago when I started gardening this series was out. I was the fire in the belly type. Worked too hard for little reward. Put plants in wrong conditions and didnt pay attention to mature size. But over the years I've figured it out but again had to over work and move plants to better conditions and appropriate places for their size. I started more formal but have evolved to more natives and a more wild look which is much easier and great for the pollinators. Thanks Yuliya😊

Wow! Amazed at how quickly you broke out the space and wrote out the garden plan! definitely can see the professional hand. Also, very interesting perspective - to start with "vision garden" and "features" - like shade space, screen or just "beautiful wall" designation - i definitely see value in this approach, makes it easier to see bigger picture and not get lost in what type of plans to put where right from the start

This video has been extremely useful for me. We have quite a large garden in the UK that completely wraps around out house with well established plants and the like. We don't get what a previous occupant was trying to achieve and trying to put our own stamp on things. All the books i've brought and read just deal with a handful of designs that don't fit out garden type and we're left not knowing how to get started. This also shows me that i need not learn a modelling software just to plan my garden, so time saved there and reinvested back into the garden. Thanks.

Very informative. Very well structured presentation. How I wish we would have seen this 44 years ago when we would have been able to afford more and physically been able to do more. We are on just under one acre...alot to figure out....alot to do..... little by little.....so one can enjoy the process and each other and the yard..... Many will benefit from these programs. Thank you for the time you have put into all of this. We also watch , Garden Answer, which encourages design and flow, but also like you, they don't charge into a project.

This was so incredibly helpful! You described the process in the best, easiest, most doable way I’ve seen - and I’ve been at this a while. I was getting so bogged down in actual dimensions and stumbling block problems that the creative problem solving of the Site Analysis fell by the wayside. Thanks so much for sharing this with us! 💚

Yay! So glad you are doing this series. I moved into my house about a year ago and I need to develop a better plan. This will help so much!

Being one of those gardeners who traditionally goes out there and buys a bunch of plants to put around my house, this is so helpful. I’m a recent convert to raingardens though, so when you mentioned low spot my immediate thought was, oooh, perfect location for one! I take the point of your lesson though, to analyse the lay of the land. Thanks (but raingarden! 😉).

Hi there, happy gardening! As a designer myself I have done many many homes and rooms and now ready to work on the outdoors. Your video was great! Really explained the area as well. I had never heard or seen anybody explain this like you do. Ready for the next video. Thank you

So hard to find "actual" garden design lessons for those of us interested in space planning to enhance the flow, visualization & use of our gardens. So far I am beyond delighted with this first lesson & cannot wait to few all of your videos. Thank you so much!!

@@ydoyougarden It was, as were the other parts. I'm buying a house with a large unkempt garden in England, so your process has helped me to understand what it is that I want to do, as well as making me realize that I need professional help!

Thank you, this is SUCH an amazing explanation of the process, so much more substantive than youtube tends to be, and so much easier to understand than when I've tried to read books on the subject. I am soaking this up like a sponge, I cannot wait to apply it to my own garden!

I have a good sized garden laid all to lawn at present and it goes all the way around my bungalow. I have been excited and very, VERY daunted by starting a design for improving the garden and as a result I haven't started yet.
I loved your video and have now subscribed. I actually feel that maybe I will be able to do this with your tutorials and feel more excited than daunted. I'll start this weekend.
Thank you for inspiring me to have a go at last. I look forward to watching part 2 when I have completed my 'homework' from part 1. x

Y, This is awesome! I have found other You-Tubers who have covered or cover this topic, but I soon fade out or change the video. While my garden is a work in progress, I have installed many features without making a plan. However, I did consider many of the elements you are covering. And the way you are going about planning will help me greatly as I improve my space. Thanks!!!!
