Way before The Lyman Family. Mel seems like a kid here. This clip is priceless. It's historical. Thank you urray Lerner for your timeless film "Festival!".
Not sure what was going on in the vid, but no matter; this is priceless footage. I was a huge Jim Kweskin fan back in the day, swiped a few harmonica licks from Mel Lyman (who we know, went on to become a destructive cult leader). Maria Muldaur didn't look happy. Thanks for putting this footage up.
About '69 I was sharing a house with some Engineering students, and a couple of them had records of Blues, which I dug, as a Led Zep fan, but also of Jug Band music, which is why I am here. Sadly, I didn't really get it and took no notice. I thought it was uncool. Now, as a fan of Bluegrass & Americana in general, I regret my narrow-minded attitude. Ah! the follies of Youth. :-)
Litterally put on this video while reading book "astral weeks:a secret history of 1968" by Ryan H. Walsh, and he tells about the moment when band is performing and being stopped, and this happens at the video,. I feel like some sort of witch now,but what would i know I'm high
Mel Lyman was certainly strange...he founded his own religious cult a bit before Charles Manson did...Lyman's cult members just followed him around, tried to make sense of his pronouncements and just generally worshipped him so it was pretty harmless...Geoff Muldaur was under his spell for a while...he was a fine harp player, though...
Does anyone have any idea what year specifically this clip would have been from? I am guessing 1966, given their hair length and expressions but could be wrong.
I hope whomever found this video knows that they are truly going to HEAVEN!!!
This music is fun.

This was the Newport folk fest of 1966. I saw them at an afternoon workshop and had every member sign my LP including Maria D'Amato (Muldaur)..
This was 1963. Fritz NEVER had a haircut like that in 1966!
WOW great video history thx for sharing
Wow, it was strange to hear Fritz Richmond talk.

When your mouth gets dry you know you’re high, everything is dandy.
Awesome!
Thanks very much.
it wasn't the Newport folk & jazz festival there were two different festivals

actually not so harmless...do some research. A book about The Family came out recently by Guinevere Turner. He was a lunatic.
