Mary with the big swings at the end was good fun, made what I thought was a done deal hours ago weirdly exciting. Personally speaking it’s a great list but I’d put Alan Wake way way lower for all the reasons mentioned, but also I don’t think it’s going to age too well - in less than a year I think it’ll go through a reappraisal it won’t come out favourably from (a reverse Death Stranding).
Mary is consistently the best person in GOTY discussions because I feel like she very often vocalises what people might be thinking but are afraid to say. She is also passionate about getting the games she cares about high, while also being considerate of others. It has always driven me crazy during Giant Bomb game of the year discussions when a duder is clearly passionate about something but shrinks away from even making their case. Just make your case and let it fall or stand on its own.
that game came out after lies of p stole all its thunder for being a much better souls-like and utterly polished right out the game. lords just had way too many bugs and balancing issues with the spawns and other nonsense and got relegated to being a lesser game unfortunately. it's still great but it took them weeks to iron out all the issues. lies of p just ran better, played snappier, had superb boss designs and was tight
Well done Mike keeping Tears of the Kingdom on top. Mike liked it way more than Pikmin Jake liked it more than Pikmin Dan liked it more than Pikmin and considers it his best game of all time. How does that not result in it ranking higher than Pikmin? Because Mary burnt out on Zelda after 65 hours? That’s literally the only argument for putting Pikmin above.
I’m still not done but Mario Wonder got absolutely shafted on numerous occasions. Amazing podcast and it’s made the holiday travel fly by. And also the attempts to put Tears of the Kingdom at 4 were laughable.
