  • What happens when you try to build the ultimate sleeper Mac? Maybe it's this. A 1991 Macintosh Classic II with a Retina display, M1 and a matching vintage-style custom mechanical keyboard. It is NOT smooth sailing!

    The worst part of this video is having to look at your face. seriously bro, you got a face for radio, or, a webcam cover.

    This was the first computer I ever used. Brings back old memories.
    I'm thinking of dropping an M2 Mini inside an old G4 Cube and adding a ton of extra storage to fill the extra space.

    • @iCaveDave
      @iCaveDave  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a G4 Cube here, it still works and the Mac mini used to live on top - there isn't room inside for the whole Mac mini, but you could pull the internals to go in there.

    Try a HDMI plug to fake out the output. Rider68

      Like a terminator? I even tried just mirroring the main display to the second so I could just have that out of the way but it knows what I'm up to and won't work!

    I am about to put a Mac Studio M2 Ultra in my Macintosh 512ED from 1984. I bought some descent equipment, 8" LCD screen, everything. I am just not sure if I will keep the yellowing so that it is original or to retrobright it, or paint it.

    I've been embarking on a similar project with a Macintosh Plus. Also using an iPad display with a Chinese HDMI driver board, but I purchased a brand new 'replacement LCD' for an iPad 3. Not needing to dismantle an old iPad seemed worth while.
    As for the Underscan issue, yeah, it's a headache. I ended up finding that the app SwitchResX allows you to enable underscan for any display. It also allows custom resolutions at 1x and retina 2x. The Display doesn't like booting up in 'underscan' mode though, so I have to remember to turn underscan off before turning the mac off, then I can turn it on once it boots. I've thought about finding an HDMI video processor that does 'hardware' underscan, but because the iPad display is 4x3, and everything is 16x9 these days, that's almost an impossibility. Thankfully my controller doesn't have that weird 'needs an external display' issue that you're facing.
    As for the powerbutton thing. I configured the mac to 'restart automatically after power failure', and never shut the mac down. I sleep it, and then kill power while it's sleeping - not at all ideal, but it's hasn't caused any issues yet‽

      I've done similar stuff with recover from power failure - but I think I tried that App without luck - may have had an update! Thanks for the message!

    Audio is easy, I would get a small circuitboard audio amplifier with a switch you can leave in the on-positon; Lots exist for 5 or 12 volt and can power a decent set of stereo speakers, or use the original mono speaker and mount the board near the rear of the case to access the headphone jack for external speakers. For the screen perhaps there isn't a software fix but maybe an entire lens in front of the lcd, you could in theory use a type fresnel lens. if you have no fear of death there's a hack somewhere where a guy cuts the front glass of the original CRT off and i think he cured the LCD to that with UV setting glue to get the retro effect.

    • @iCaveDave
      @iCaveDave  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cutting the CRT sounds terrifying. I have a feeling there has to be a software solution out there, I'll keep looking. Thanks for the audio advice! I'll work on that next I think!

    My wife asked me to fix her iPod nano 7 as it isn't holding a charge for very long. I tested it out for 30 minutes but she found that it only lasted 10 minutes using a wired headset. The battery level is about 70% when fully charged and I need to do some more testing on it to determine the real battery life. So I took out the iPod nano 5 and charged it up, and, same thing - the battery level would only go up to about 70%. And then I took out the iPod nano 2. What's surprising is that the iPod nano 2 charged to 100% and I used it for an hour and it was still at 100%. So she's using that and I'm going to take back the 5 and the 7.
    I called up the place that replaced the battery on my 2014 MacBook Pro and they quote $85 to replace the battery with the caveat that the battery replacement may brick the device. They indicated that they do not like to work on these things. One other thing is that the resale value of these things is still pretty good. I'm going to take the nano 7 for a long walk to see how it does on Bluetooth and then on battery. What I'd like to do long term is to find a really small Lightning battery pack and then glue it to the back with a very short cable to the Lightning port of the nano 7. These devices are mainly useful for walking or running when you don't want to carry your phone .

      I'd say there's a decent chance the batteries in those two are starting to swell inside so just be careful!

    Lazy and boring. Typical reddit-tier cyberdeck/sleeper build.
    Without using the CRT all you have done is hack a screen into the box.
    A child could do this.
