It's also cool that they did an episode partially set in Japan, given how much the show's characters and animation style are influenced by anime, especially early anime (in the case of the characters, the fact that Jenny is a robot, Sheldon looks Asian and Misty is a ninja are both good examples of the Japanese influence.) The original Oh Yeah Cartoons version of the pilot also had a very strong and obvious resemblance to modern anime. One of my close older family members actually confused it for an anime when I watched it as a kid during its initial run. I don't believe that "cultural appropriation" is a real phenomenon (at least not as woke leftists characterize it), but I think it's cool that the animators readily acknowledge the elements of the show borrowed from anime. It's hardly my favorite episode but the though behind it was nice.
You can thank Janice Kawaye (pronounced: kuh-WYE-yay) for that. She's half-Japanese and half-American, so she's fluent in both English and Japanese. Heck, if there's a reboot, then maybe she could reprise her role for the Japanese dub.
It’s crazy to know that Janice Kawaye voiced and spoken Japanese in two of my favorite childhood animated series: Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi and MLAATR. It’s a shame both got unceremoniously cancelled and my kid self wondering why they weren’t being aired anymore.
As someone learning japanese this is my favorite episode in the entire series Even i shown this to my japanese teacher, she never watched many american cartoons and was impress by how this episode was smooth
I'm not sure Janice Kawaye has ever done anime dubs, but I know for a fact she was not Jenny's voice actress in the Japanese dub of the show, though that would've been cool. FWIW, Janice was also in the animated TV adaptation of The Karate Kid back in the 80s.
I'm a tad bit late to this, but Kawaye's actually had a sizeable presence in a lot of anime and video games recently! She's been the voice of Ayane in some of the Dead or Alive games (Mostly Ninja Gaiden), Yuzu Kurosaki in Bleach, Shizuku in Hunter x Hunter, and perhaps most famously, Lysithea in Fire Emblem Three Houses and Peko Pekoyama in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair! Glad to know she's still very much around; I have a feeling her bilingualism helped her break into that field pretty easy, considering she does a pretty solid job in most of the works she's in. Though nothing's gonna top Jenny for most of us.
For anyone wondering why the Hopping Vampires are in Japan, It should be noted that from ancient times, as Japan was forming, it took a lot of cultural cues, myths and even some Chinese characters from China and vise-versa. A good example would be the Japanese Kitsune (a magical shape shifting Fox) can also be found in China under the name Huli jing and has a similar background in its myth. The same can be said for these Hopping Vampires HOWEVER they only look wrong as the animators most likely were trying to reference the Kyonshī. They pretty much look the same other than the Kyonshī having a sutra on their hat/forehead, which I believe that the animators purposely omitted as to save time and not animate waving paper physics on all the enemies while also fully showing off their designs. Hope this explanation helps
IMO this was one of the many memorable episodes I remember watching as a kid, along with the other two "No Evil" episodes. This was also the first time I heard another language aside from English being spoken back then. I did also really enjoy the episode back then too.
Speak No Evil is one of my favorites from season 1. Maybe it's because some of the ideas are used so memorable that they feel original in this series. Like Jenny stuck with speaking in a foreign language or her malfunctioned daydream chip disconnected her from reality.
Late reply, but if I remember right, China and Japan have a history of invading each other at different points in time. So maybe these hopping vampires (I thought they were some sort of goblin at first) crossed into Japan from China if I have to guess. But back to the episode itself, loved how Jenny was speaking Japanese in this episode. Kinda wish we got an anime short series based off MLAATR.
My idea of why there are Jiangshi in Japan is that in Japan, they call it Kyonshi. Which may mean that regardless of which Asian countries you are in, you might stumble upon a Jiangshi.
Well since China & Japan have been neighbors for millennia, it only makes senwe that some of their cultural aspects would get mixed together, like some of their mythological creatures having similarities to each other, like a Dragon-Deer, or a 9 Tailed-Fox, or their versions of the Pheniox.
First, Jenny was not Nora's slave. Wakeman gave her freedom of choice, and slavery is by definition forced. Second, I always thought the kid who retrieved Jenny's English disc was a boy, not a girl. Third, seeing the yellow tint on the Japanese characters, though not necessarily inaccurate, would probably trigger accusations of racism today by woke leftists, so it's probably a good thing the show wasn't more of a hit because cancel culture would almost certainly try to claim its head, just like they claimed Pepe Le Pew. As would this whole episode, due to the mythical demon of "cultural appropriation" (man, I hate that phrase.) Come to think of it, there are a LOT of things cancel culture would hate about the show, but I digress.
Since Jenny is a computer, her brain must be using Google Translate to translate her speech, given to how quickly and efficiently Jenny switched from English to Japanese in a matter of seconds (Yes, I know Google doesn't exist in MLaaTR).
Why does this show's animation look like Powerpuff Girls? This was a Nickelodeon show, and none of the PPG staff were involved in this, were they? The gag with the hose and the idiot not understanding what to do with it is very much like PPG.
The thumbnail artist was blurred out because it was an incorrect credit, and I no longer have access to the video files associated with the video. We changed the thumbnail, and I’m working out a way to add the text credit over the blur.
For an official new season, probably not. However, there’s a fanmade 4th and 5th season in development. You can follow that project by searching for “My Life as a Teenage Robot Rebooted” on TH-cam!
There’s an Australian release of the DVD going back into circulation, that’s for the complete series. Alternatively, I believe it’s available on Paramount+ now

I find it funny how when Jenny asked the guy what was wrong in the Japanese version, he couldn't understand her until she spoke English. And why did he reply to her in Japanese if he couldn't understand it?
Hypothetically speaking, if no one in Tremorton understands Japanese, why would the firefighters expect to learn Japanese in the library since possibly no one in Tremorton understands Japanese because there are no source of learning it there? (Maybe there are Japanese books there, just no one bothers to read it)

It's cool how they used Janice Kawaye's bilinguality, and how they made such a good episode with it.
I always wondered how they came up with the idea for the episode. Now I know
It's also cool that they did an episode partially set in Japan, given how much the show's characters and animation style are influenced by anime, especially early anime (in the case of the characters, the fact that Jenny is a robot, Sheldon looks Asian and Misty is a ninja are both good examples of the Japanese influence.) @WhiteLichMage Yeah, I'm well aware of that as well.
I love it when a VA shows their multilanguage skills
I love how Jenny speaks Japanese. I love that episode.

Plus Janice Kawaya is voice of Ami Onuki in Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi
It’s crazy to know that Janice Kawaye voiced and spoken Japanese in two of my favorite childhood animated series: Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi and MLAATR. It’s a shame both got unceremoniously cancelled and my kid self wondering why they weren’t being aired anymore.
Agreed. I felt the same way about MLAATR. It's still one of my favorite shows of all time and I was really bummed to discover it was cancelled too
As someone learning japanese this is my favorite episode in the entire series

I know she was a voice in the Hunter x Hunter dub

@@charlescollings2062 Yeah, so playing Jenny again in All Stars Brawl wouldn't be a huge leap for her, even though she hasn't done Jenny in 15+ years.
And also Peter the Panda on Phineas and Ferb.
Fun fact: Janice Kawaye also spoke Japanese during Hi HI Puffy AmiYumi.

such a wonderful episode, and awesome work as always!!
The concept of losing the ability to speak a language is my favorite trope, so seeing it in a way that it actually makes sense is amazing
0:13 I love this “no evil” episode, too.
Fun fact: the Japanese dub of mlaatr the language are reverse, she speak English instead Japanese
I can imagine Jenny realizing she can only speak English and not Japanese and screaming, “OOOOHHHHH NOOOOOO!!!!”
2:35 it took me a brain fart and my friend's little sister in a call, and shazam to remember what song this scream is from
I wish this show would come back
I like how the thumbnail makes Jenny's hairstyle look like Callie from Splatoon 😄
We love this episode
Aw hell naw bruh Janet do be speacin’ anniemay (reference to Aw hell naw spunchbop meme)
Being a vampire kinda implies you're already dead.
Suprising how many people where involved in making this video
Honestly, i really love this episode anyway :D
My idea of why there are Jiangshi in Japan is that in Japan, they call it Kyonshi. Which may mean that regardless of which Asian countries you are in, you might stumble upon a Jiangshi.
The French version has Jenny speaking backwards. (It's true.)

This is the episode i remember the most, so fun and i loved it
5:46 Top secret weapon used by the Yakuza Maybe?
I love this episode
Wow I’m first, great video!
I was not sure what Jenny was saying when I saw this episode.
Jenny XJ9 Goes Goku's Talk
It's more interesting when you watch the Romanian dub and hear the japanese pronounciation😂
I am a fan too!
First, Jenny was not Nora's slave. Wakeman gave her freedom of choice, and slavery is by definition forced. Second, I always thought the kid who retrieved Jenny's English disc was a boy, not a girl. i bet the japanese dubbed version that jenny speaks engrish.
I don't get why the Japanese version didn't use janice kawaye for jenny
Awesome vid. Thx
I always laugh episode!🥰 This is the best episode ever. I like how jenny is japanese. If jenny wakeman is become anime?
its crazy how jenny's voice actress is actually Japanese!
2:36 this caught me laughing out loud
wait if nora doesn't speak japanese then how did she create a japanese language disk for jenny in the first place
Since Jenny is a computer, her brain must be using Google Translate to translate her speech, given to how quickly and efficiently Jenny switched from English to Japanese in a matter of seconds (Yes, I know Google doesn't exist in MLaaTR).
NANII!?

2:14 I think they're supposed to be Chinese Vampires. They probably didn't know at the time that the myth was from China
4:11 I mean jenny isn't really a slave
9:02 lol she is already in FNF
9:06 whitty mod but its whitty vs jenny
I wonder if they will one day make a live action my life as a teenage robot, when I was 8 I had a crush on Jenny
Do tuckered out next
We’re trying to do them in order of release right now, but we’ll cover that one eventually!
Great video but... why was the thumbnail artist blurred out in the end? Kinda messed up
The thumbnail artist was blurred out because it was an incorrect credit, and I no longer have access to the video files associated with the video.
We changed the thumbnail, and I’m working out a way to add the text credit over the blur.
@@MyLifeasaTeenageRobotFanbase ok that's understandable, I thought there was drama lmao
Nah, I couldn’t possibly stir up drama with Atomic or Prog, they’re incredible. You can follow them on Twitter @TheAtomicGeek and @TheProgBass
My favorite one.
Hi I’m new here so I have probably the most asked question is there any hope for a new season?
For an official new season, probably not. However, there’s a fanmade 4th and 5th season in development. You can follow that project by searching for “My Life as a Teenage Robot Rebooted” on TH-cam!
I love ❤️ this very interesting 🤨 lol 😂!
How could Jenny defend a country if that country is fighting another one?
Then MLaaTR wouldn't be a kids show anymore.
Someone could edit the English episode to have the Japanese translation to still be the English translation from the Japanese dub
I remember them! 5:41
I have a question. Since they discontinued the dvds. Where can I watch the show?
There’s an Australian release of the DVD going back into circulation, that’s for the complete series.
Alternatively, I believe it’s available on Paramount+ now
@@MyLifeasaTeenageRobotFanbase paramount+ is not available in my country

How does a pinned comment have a date "8 months ago"?
Because the video is 8 months old ;)
Super Duper strange language
I can speak Spanish French and even Chinese
As good as the episode was, I can’t help wondering why they didn’t bother putting in English subtitles for the scenes of Jenny speaking Japanese.
I love XJ9
