Good, this is a reminder to scan my postcards. I am using iX1600 to scan my personal documents. Only a few hundred postcards (I love) NY buildings from 1st half of 20th century to just post WW2. I will scan 2 sides.
Thanks for doing this video. I wanted the wireless capability in a scanner. Epson only offered in their 500 model, more $$. the Fugitsu seems to meet my needs really well. Again Thanks Andy
Awesome information sir. That scanner is a little expensive for someone to start off with selling postcard or sports cards. Do you have any suggestions for someone just getting started?
I have never used a S1500, I have an IX1500 and works well. I just purchased one of the newer scanners Epson has come out with, the ES-580W and did a video review of it here th-cam.com/video/tHwswB7VWt0/w-d-xo.html. I still like my Scan Snap, but have used the Epsons more lately.
I also know that has herring bone effect, I do not run across it to often with postcards, happens more on magazine type ads I found etc. If not to pronounced I just let it go, if I need to adjust. I try changing some setting on a the scanner or I throw it in a photo editor. (Only if the card is worth the time).
Nice video. :) You mention no border around the resulting image. That would seem to be a potential deal breaker when selling postcards, baseball cards, etc, no? I buy/sell baseball cards on eBay and edge/corner condition needs to be visible. Do you find edges are cut off the resulting scan even slightly? Also, what Epson model were you considering?
Correct border is a nice feature and does let the person see the edges better. I have not seen any cut offs and scans show the edges even small nicks. I see it more has a ease of presentation with a border. Also Postcard condition is a little more forgiving than on sports cards I believe so. I can use a borderless scanner for them where with sports cards like you said more about condition. If I remember right it was the Epson Work Force series models I looked at. You can see the different images from both scanners in these eBay stores. Fujitsu Scan Snap Scanner at our eBay store www.smpostcards.com and I know Dusty uses the Epson and you can see his images at his eBay store www.ebay.com/str/bama4348.
I always tried to find a way of keeping and storing postcards at home. I scan them too, but could you make a video about how to do that in a standard house? Thank you.
I have never tried that, but I think once it is scanned in to the computer you can then use a program to resize. Might have some quality loss the bigger you go.
Hey, what's your average monthly sell-through rate for postcards? I'm looking for a collectible that can beat 10%. Also, where can I get those boxes you keep the postcards in?
The boxes we use are from www.bagsunlimited .com We do not really look at sell thru rate with post cards as it is not a good indicator for vintage type items for us. If we calculate the rate it will be probably between 2%-4%. That rate probably would not be reached either unless you had volume of items listed. Postcards are a marathon once we hit about 7,000 cards listed is when we started seeing a noticeable increase in items sold. We list approx. 10,000 cards per year above what we sell so it takes a long time to get the postcard game going. In the last year is when we started seeing steady sales. Hope this makes sense.
@@SMPostcards How many postcards do you sell per month on average? How many do you have to list per month to get that number? Also, what's a good average price to charge if I'm going to work the quick nickle angle?
I list with eBay and Etsy forms. I do not cross post items except for eBay postcards to Hip Postcards, but that is a automatic sync using Hip Postcards API. We also have Ink Frog, but only use that for backing up the listings in case anything ever happens I have the eBay listings and Photos I can reimport from Ink Frog to eBay.
I never considered a mobile scanner or document camera scanners so cannot really comment on how they would do. I was looking for something a little more robust then I would think a smaller mobile device would do. Again depends on the persons budget and needs. Could be a good scanner to look at for just starting out and grow to a more robust one when needed.
@@SMPostcards Yeah, I don't want to put in too much money at the start. I need to gauge sales performance of anything before I commit to a full scale operation.
Great video, thank you and thanks for all your other videos too. Couple of questions on this, I bought this scanner after watching your video and so glad I did. However when scanning a lot of cards, as it doesn't always pick up the name of the postcard, when I come to list them, going through a big pile of scanned cards, any tips for quickly identifying the right images? i go by date but it's sometimes difficult to know which cards are which. Second question, How do I bulk delete all images in Scansnap? Or is that done in Scansnap Home somehow? I never use Scansnap Home, not sure what it is for. Hope you can help with a bit of advice on those two queries. But yes, fantastic scanner and thanks for tipping us off about it!
Thanks for watching! Let me see if I can help with these questions. I have never used the scanner to pick up the name of the postcard. Way to inconsistent. When I scan a stack of postcards. I Scan them to a folder on my PC. (I configure that in Scan Snap Home) and put them in a box in the order I scan them so when I go to list, I know the next image is the one I'm listing. Then before I list the next one I delete the last image from the folder. To delete images. I scan all postcards to a folder and delete them as I go. I have never deleted them in Scan Snap Home. I do not use Scan Snap Home for much, just managing the scanner etc. I think it can be used for document management. Again it is where I manage the scanner the folders I scan to etc. Did I help? :)
@@SMPostcards Many thanks! I scan the cards to a folder called Scansnap, yes they come out in order but sometimes I have to go find them at the bottom of a long set of previously scanned images. Maybe I should delete as I go along like you do. I can only seem to delete them individually in that folder not in bulk. I notice sometimes it picks up the name of the postcard but most times it doesn't, I haven't tried to work on that at all either. I did wonder if I was missing some vital purpose of Scansnap Home, but it doesn't sound like it. Thank you so much for a quick and helpful reply - looking forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers!
Great video! If you use the Automatic option for whether it is colour or black and white, etc, how does it cope when you scan a B/W postcard or do you have to only scan colour ones in a batch and then change the setting to do real photo black and white ones?
I have it set to color an it picks up the color or black and white cards. I have never had to change it. What I found with the Fujitsu Scan Snap is there is not an option to have like a border around the image (at least can't find one). I have a bunch of RPPC cards that have a white edge and look bad. So I purchased an Epson ES-400 II and it has a nice black border around the images. If you look in my eBay store you can see this www.smpostcards.com will take you to the store. I like my scan snap better but border is good for white edges so have 2 scanners now :)

Thank you for the tutorial on setting up the scanner. It really helped me and I got scanning quickly.
Great to hear! Any questions let me know I might be able to help.
Great video. We hope you will post more shows on different aspects of selling vintage and antique postcards.
We will!

Anytime! Any questions let me know I might have an answer as I have had mine for awhile
Just ordered mine tonight. You did a great job on this video, thanks
Glad I could help
Awesome information sir. That scanner is a little expensive for someone to start off with selling postcard or sports cards. Do you have any suggestions for someone just getting started?
Use a camera or cell phone until you gain enough cash flow to invest in a scanner.
Hmm. I ordered a S1500 snap scanner. Should I have gone with the IX1500?
I have never used a S1500, I have an IX1500 and works well. I just purchased one of the newer scanners Epson has come out with, the ES-580W and did a video review of it here th-cam.com/video/tHwswB7VWt0/w-d-xo.html.

I managed to pick up a different brand of scanner, for free.
Just wondering how you deal with moire?

I would always go for Fujitsu.
My cheap Fujitsu just keeps eorking for years. I have had 5 Epsons.
I still have my ScanSnap and also a couple of Epsons so far so good.
excellent - thank you for the post !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your welcome Thanks for watching!
Great video. Hopefully you make more great video like this one. What do you sell your cards on.
We sell Postcards on eBay, Etsy and Hip Postcards under the name SMPostcards.
www.smpostcards.com will take you to our eBay store.
I always tried to find a way of keeping and storing postcards at home. I scan them too, but could you make a video about how to do that in a standard house? Thank you.
I go over many things we do for our Postcards in this video from the boxes and shelfs used etc. th-cam.com/video/a9G5sy_aTn8/w-d-xo.html
How many cards get torn or ripped in the scanner?
I cannot remember a time where the scanner cause damaged to a card.
Hi, is it posible to scan postcards to print them in large format? Lets Say a3, or even a2?? What about quality?
I have never tried that, but I think once it is scanned in to the computer you can then use a program to resize. Might have some quality loss the bigger you go.
I'm 100% on ebay selling postcards. How does etsy compare? Worth it to do both?
Out of all the cards I sold this year the breakdown is eBay 83% Etsy 13%.
A lot slower.

Do you use any 3rd party listing software like sellbrite or inkfrog

Would a cheaper, mobile document scanner work as well? Something around $120 like a Brother?
