    I’ve never found turn-based games to be boring. Was interesting to discover that this was the general consensus (about a month ago lol).

    It’s a great list. Also loved the mentioned of Legend of Dragoon. Found their melee combos fun.
    I also loved Child of Light, which is basically just Grandia’s system. I’m surprised more games haven’t tried that system.

    Two games I would like to mention: Lost Odyssey, while not revolutionary the mix of Immortal / mortal character as well as the Ring & wall system were pretty good. When you attack two rings would show up on the screen. The larger one would rapidly grow smaller and you must click when it is within the smaller ring to get a bonus (based on your equipment if I remember well). On top of that, there was a system of lines (front & back as usual) however the front line's HP would create a "Wall", Each time front liners are hit, the wall's hp decrease. The weaker the wall gets, the lower back liners characters defense bonus is (until it disappears entirely). Healing front liners would not heal the wall. It was interesting to balance Weak yet Useful/Powerful characters with sturdy characters.
    The other one is DB: Legendary Super Warriors. It is not your usual RPG as it is a Turn-based fighting game RPG (looks like an abomination). You would play one to two characters (only one playable at a time) against another enemy (or pair of enemies). It had a weird card system where you would gather "points" (using free cards) to use the most powerful or useful cards. The original aspect of this game lies in his turn-based aspect. Each turn was divided into two phases, defense & offense. When you are on the offensive the opponent is only able to rely on the defensive (block, dodge, etc.) & support cards (boost, healing, protection, etc.) Next phase and you had to deal with your opponent's wrath. Sadly, the system was far from perfect. Unforgiving QTE (in 2002 !) and a lot of RNG made it pretty hard (on top of that, the game had a lot of secret "quests" which were very convoluted and unexplained. Most of them were downright arbitrary (if you talk to X & Y characters in the right order then manage to reach (and defeat) the second boss without dying once you get a major character (which can be unlocked later but you would miss a lot of EXP (limited in this game) and it is still complicated). The worst part? It may be the easiest "secret quest" of the game...

      Lost Odyssey does have some unique battle mechanics, I should have mentioned it in the "Honourable Mentions" part but I don't like flooding that section too much if I can help it.
      As for DBZ: Legendary Super Warriors, I had never played it, probably due to my crippling Pokemon Red addiction. Definitely seems like a contender for this list :)

    • @NobodySoldier
      @NobodySoldier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyraSlokov I suffered from Pokemon Red Addiction too. It was tough to get out of it. A great RPG by the way !
      As for DBZ : LSW. Yes, it was unique and had many features. (Your Deck made of 20 cards, 4 Free cards (Basic Attack, Movement, Defense, and Charge) and 3 cards with unlimited use (available for three turns when you use "Charge"). A lot of RNG but thanks to the charge you could predict when you had to defend the most (if your opponent is "charging", he will be using his best attacks soon.)

      @@NobodySoldier Damn, I need to get my hands on the DBZ game, sounds great :D

    • @NobodySoldier
      @NobodySoldier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MyraSlokov Hope you enjoy it. Much better with a guide to unlock every character though. These secret conditions to unlock characters (the most complicated quest lock 3 fights and a lot of exp on top of missing a powerful character) are nasty. One of them implies talking to the same character 5 times in a row (repeating the same thing) until he says something different!
      Far from perfect but I enjoyed it a lot.

    Nice to see Ar Tonelico get some #1 slot love. A lot of people only see the series as fan service but the story is involved, the music is amazing, and the game system is great. You could easily pull the fan servicey bits out entirely and still have a solid game.

    ar tonelico 2's battle system was pretty cool but it took me a long time to get use to its imput timing since it feels way different then most rythm games iv played but if there ever was another game or a remake of some sort with the same concept but more improved it would be awesome. and yes i know there was no mention of shadow hearts but thats ok we already know myra loves those games enough haha

    Nice video ! I only played Ar Tonelico 1 but I'm not surprised to see the 2 as the best choice. 1 has technically a very solid gameplay, so if the sequel upgrades it, the result is obvious.
    I expected a little bit to see Persona 1 or 2 to be mentioned, at least as notable mention, but well, the battle was rude.
    Recently, I enjoyed a lot Atelier Shallie and Ray Gigant on PS Vita. You should consider those titles.

    Darn it, I remember feeling goose bump, even to this day, when I perform a Synchorinity, a sneak peak of that song flashes as the enemy goes down. Those was good time, and they even included Ar 1 songs into the second game. Too bad after 4 runs of the game(all endings), and a disappointed AR3 and then NIS decided to scrap AR tonelico franchise, I live the rest of my life on all the song lists that I carry everyday to work.

    • @WalkerRileyMC
      @WalkerRileyMC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      GUST, not NIS. NIS is just the American publisher. They did continue it with the Surge Concerto games, but unfortunately those didn't do as well so they dropped it.
      I think the issue with 3 is they focused far too much on the fan service. The music and story were still good. But that battle system.......If I described a game where the girls powered up by undressing you'd think I was talking about a hentai game, and rightfully so.

    • @YouRunForReal
      @YouRunForReal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WalkerRileyMC Oh yeah, my bad about GUST. Big turn off is that battle system, abandon innovative to follow the trend of star ocean/ tales game. They even apologize for it. Damm. I don't mind the undressing, they explain about that in the 1st and 2nd games.

    Agree with most of your video, but...
    Wild Arms 4? Considering this is a (rather) new video and these are old PS2 titles... Why not Wild Arms 5? Basically everything WA4 has to offer but better/refined/upgraded and then some more.
    The same with Grandia... Why not Grandia 2?
    And there is none from Shadow Heart series?
    Also, imo xenogears is better than legend of legaia. Their battle system is similar, but with xenogears have more than just the combo system.
    Btw, Valkyria Chronicles... but using footage from VC4...

    Terrible intro. Turn based isn't boring but nice selection (though the chrono trigger hype gets old, especially with useless combination moves or spamming haste vs Magus with color coded enemies to force parties like final fantasy 3, and grandia 1 and 2 have lacking difficulty). Super robot wars 30 has cool animations like the 30 years worth of other games, and strategy rpgs count as turns.
    If you need a regular rpg, Lufia 2 had a cool IP system, but dragon quest 3-5 solidified things like how ff7 did.
    Legaia 2 was bette than the first one as leveling magic secret of mana style is awful (ff2 Took forever with boost and toggling off random encounters let alone buff ultima to not have heavy armor/double shield magic interference to go with the level everything else, let alone attacking with double shield in pixel remaster is possible to buff unarmed attacks).
    12:02 bravo for flashing xenogears wirh every attack. Theres no excuse even back then, definirely dim your screen or wear sunglasses for that eyestrain.
