    I am loving where our flat walk and running walk are at. Smooth, balanced, light, even steps, mobile, and a nice nod. What do you think?

    I'm an agriculture student teacher getting ready to teach a lesson on horses. I think I will show my students this video when teaching them about the TWH. We will briefly cover soring and cruel practices of the breed, and I think this will be a great example of an ideal natural TWH gait! Thanks for the great video!

    Thank you. These lovely animals deserve to be treated like this. I absolutely HATE that “big lick” nonsense

    This horse is beautiful! This natural looseness and carriage he exhibits reminds me of the clips I have seen of Strolling Jim.

    ❤At last a cared for TWH. The horse and rider both look normal. Not like those silly
    Looking riders and abused horses doing the big lick.

    My mare just now started to gait correctly; however, she's not entirely engaging her hind end. She will occasionally do it and, I'm assuming out of laziness, will fall out of it. Do you have any exercises or stretches I could do with her to get her to engage her hind end more?

      I've worked on this, too. Counter bend exercises move the shoulders to be light and if the shoulders are light, the hindquarters must be carrying more weight. Also, slow rein back to slow walk transitions, and shoulder in and haunches on a small circle at a slow walk. These exercises have helped us engage so much! I hope this helps.

    I work as a therapeutic riding instructor and my client just started riding a TW in our program. I have 0 experience with gaited horses, but trying to learn so that my rider can progress and horse will stay well and happy

      Great question. Ideally, a three-beat canter is what I shoot for. However, it is common that many gaited horses tend to not have much air time and are more four beat at the canter. To develop more air time, cantering over ground poles and letting the horse hand gallop can help. Other gaited horses have a lateral canter. and tension seems to make it worse. It is possible to help break up the lateral canter by relaxing the horse’s mouth, jaw and poll which can bring relaxation to the body. Bending exercises also help. This is a process and takes time. I hope this helps.

      thanks for the info! Ours goes in a bitless bridle. I've tried ground poles at the walk when trying to do the freewalk- he plods into them right now lol would you prioritize bending work over pole work, or does it matter? he's got an adorable little running walk. @@NaturallyGaitedHorse

    Is it supposed to put its head up and down like that?

    • @NaturallyGaitedHorse
      @NaturallyGaitedHorse  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. Naturally gaited horses like the Tennessee walking horse are known for having a head nod at a flat walk and running walk.

      Yep. My main lesson horses were Walkers; they like to head bob as you go along, just vibin'. Some happy snorts here and there if I was sitting correctly in the saddle and they could really move. I love Walkers. Riding a fast running walk is SO much fun!

      Yes, 100% registered TWH. She was overweight and is now back to her normal weight.

    Could just be me, but all those non-showring examples move a little off, they don't have a natural, even head bob like the TennWalker in your linked example. The linked horse has good movement to my eye. But it is good to see sound examples.
