Fixing a pacey stiff and resistant gaited horse

  • In this video we address a very common problem in the gaited horse world. So many people do not know what a true gait is or should be, so they let their horses pace and they never really teach the horse relaxation, collection, or softness. Eventually lamenesses or soreness on the body arise and the horse developes a bad attitude. This is a vicious circle and we are going to show you how to start to break this vicious cycle. Forget about the gait for awhile and create a soft willing horse that is balanced and supple.

      Hi Patriciafrino! These ssh seem to live forever. Thanks for your comment and I hope the videos help you. If she is pacey check out my videos longing over poles at a walk and then at a gait. Amazing how fast it can fix a pace.

    I just found your channel and I to just acquired a gaited horse. I'm so glad you made this video to get us all started in fixing this. I grew up riding everything from Roping, WP HUS and I was training level 3 dressage. This video helped my confidence in fixing my mares issues. Thank you so much!

    Glad I found this video! I’ve had my TWH for a few months. She’s very stiff, pacey, and alert, and I’ve struggled a little bit with getting her to relax under saddle. I’m excited to give these exercises a try with her next time we ride!

    Thank you so much for this video. I'm new to gaited horses. I've acquired a TWH, and I was told it is a great trail horse. And he wasn't afraid of anything. Well, not what i was seeing. I've had him 1 1/2 years and he is gaining confidence and relaxing so much more will walk with head level now (except the 1st 15 minutes, he reverts back to what use to be expected of him) I can now ride him on a loose rein. Your video is so informative, and thank you again.

      You sound very committed to your horse and it sounds like it is paying off. So many TWH are taught to be flighty and stiff. I am glad you found this helpful.

    I actually like stepping pace for wp/ep, and trails.

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be very comfortable! This horse had a hard pace and was very tense. He is doing great now. You don't want them traveling tight and tense for their mind or their body, but I have ridden the stepping pace in a relaxed horse and it felt great. I know what you mean. The argument is that it is harmful for their structure over the long haul, but I have not seen scientific proof of that.

    WOW I AGREE WITH U 100% THIS HORSE IS NOT HAPPY. I JUST BOUGHT A HORSE JUST LIKE THIS. HE IS NOT HAPPY. CAN U TELL ME THE MENTAL EXERCISES U DO TO RELAX HIM? I HAVE BEEN GROUND WORKING HIM MOSTLY. THEN GETTING HIM TO LOWER HIS HEAD & WHEN HE DOES HE IS SWEET, BUT HE IS SO NERVOUS ALL THE TIME IT DOES GET FRUSTRATING. I WILL DO THESE EXERCISES AS WELL. I KNOW IT WILL HELP HIM TOO..THANK U FOR THE GREAT ADVICE DOREEN!

    • @dreamgaits
      @dreamgaits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Doreen, If you just bought him I would spend a couple weeks just doing ground school and setting him/her up for success. Set little goals and I mean little goals each day and as soon as you get to it stop, groom, bathe, hand graze. Build a relationship first.

    The horse has his tail cocked to one side, maybe a back issue.
