I use plastic square drainpipes to make arches. Sink them into the ground, fit some wood into the tops of the pipes and then fix 3x1 wooden rails into them at the required length and then attach roofing laths near the bottom and top the make the frame complete, then attach canes/ netting to the laths, withstands any winds and is really steadfast when the beans start coming . Cheap too.
Oh dear. Well I wish you luck with those arches. I had a couple in my garden for the roses, not got. They do not, at least mine Did Not last long at all. I have an allotment and my Bean arches are made from wood, they cost me £18 incl screws and netting. Good luck and continue to enjoy your allotment. Having made this negative comment, it looks like you might just have hit on a good idea, looking at how you have fitted them, they look good.
We've been watching your channel for some time now and really enjoy your vids. Lots of information and a bit of humour, can't be bad. Give your mum a hug, she's awesome
Aww jessie, you can tell you are just such a sweet nice person. Im really looking forward to seeing how your plot will look in spring/summer. It will look magnificent.
Great vlog Jessie and well done job on the Arches and keep warm, safe and well during these uncertain times. It's been snowing since Monday in Scotland and forecast for more and yes it's definitely the coldest winter since 2010.
Love the arches. Great to have some height and structure. Will be keen to see how the beans go. Also great to get the seedling tour very inspiring - must get started. have a great week. Cheers!
I always grow my climbing beans up wigwams, probably because my mum did when I was little but you have inspired me to get a couple of arches for climbing flowers along my central path to add height and encourage pollinators...
Big thumbs up again from me...I feel like I need to plant lots of seeds to catch up! Maybe some onions and leek seeds this weekend? The chillies you sent are doing fab..great germination...I’m gunna have windows full soon 💕 chat soon. H xx
Just loving the vlogs, so full of information. Thank you for keeping us all clued in on these very chilly days. Stay safe and continue with the great work :)
Last year I worked out the cost of wooden arches for our allotment and i just couldn't justify the insane cost! I've just bought the metal arches you recommended to form the base for two, 3 meter long archways on my plot. So excited to see what it looks like in summer 🌱🌱
Got to buy some arches for my beans so I can plant more in my tiny garden Love what you do especially when your with your mum such a good team wish I done more with my mum ☹️ too late now . My Dad last year planted every seed too late to stop him he’s not allowed this year.
Another enjoyable vlog. You have a lot on the go already. I was going to get some stuff sown over the weekend, but decided to leave off until next weekend due to the weather.
The weather is crazy cold Rusty! Don’t know whats going on, its supposed to be -8 here one night this week! I haven’t ever see it that cold. The only things I’ve sown that i think I’ve jumped the gun with are the cosmos and possibly the sprouts but I’ll give it a go and re-sow in march if i need to!
Thank you for the inspirational content This is only my second year growing and ive never tried starting anything indoors but seeing you sowing those sunflower seeds, I might try and start some of mine indoors Love your cats to
I will be really interested in the Jiffy pots, and what you think about them Jess, I can remember using them years ago and at that time the membrane around them seemed to tough for roots to break through so hope they have improved as they would be a definite game changer in time and compost fingers crossed xx
Now you know why your saw is blunt :) You mentioned it a few episodes ago and I see your Mum sawing away at some tree branches !! Another great video, love your content and your natural presenting style. Keep on smiling.....
Aww your allotment is gonna look so pretty when all of those arches are full. Just the thought of sowing seeds seems a long way away for me ☃️ and I’m desperate to build my ‘Jessie tunnel house’ but we have over 6 inches of snow now, and it ain’t gonna thaw any time soon 🙄 Stay warm & safe x

Jessie, the main piece of advice I can give you for growing successful cauliflowers is to put shed loads of rotted horse manure on your soil; I just spread it on the surface in winter for the worms to take it down or if it is spring you can just dig into the surface. They also like firming in really well with your feet (or wellies!). I have some small cauli seedlings in my greenhouse now under fleece, also onions from seed and leeks - I keep the worst of the chill out of the greenhouse by lighting a pillar candle and then putting a clay pot over it and then a larger clay pot over that one - and I use a clay pot saucer also - as long as it's on a flat surface it is safe and is a good way of protecting any greenhouse seedlings even in late winter (just hardier things - not frost tender stuff obviously). It is a lot cheaper than buying propane gas and a cheap and very effective way of raising the temperature by 3 or 4 degrees on very cold nights.
Thanks Duncan, i think previously our solid has been too poor for them. Hopefully will rectify that this year! I haven’t started my onions from seed yet, I’m planning to direct sow them a bit later. And thats so interesting that you mention the candle in the greenhouse, mum and i were just reminiscing about the one year (that last super cold one) when we tried that! We didn’t get it quite right but we might give it another go this year!
Hiya Jessie. Shame about the wine but cheers anyway. Was wondering if your conservatory was heated and if not then I guess I can sow some spring onion seeds and leave on the shelf in my shed beside the window. (Might just try a few anyway to see) This will be my first year of actually trying to grow stuff to eat.
Another video to cheer a person up always such a happy face and mum working alongside you. Love the arches, I checked over here in Aus can you message what the name of the ones you found on Amazon uk are called, I only want to try cheap ones to see if they will work for me so cheaper the better. Take care. It’s ok I worked out how to locate on your site. Thanks
Perfect video again x cos my arches you recommended arrived today! Thank you- we are all loving following you on here. BTW l saw a piano in your house- is it you playing the piano in your videos? Lovely music X
Morning from a cold Cheshire, I know you bought the cheapest arches,is there a big difference in stability, with a medium priced one, just thought I would ask you,as you seem to know about your arches ,great video, you have a great passion for your allotment, its great to see, thanks
Love the arches! i did one last year across betwwen two of the beds, i agree they are wobbly too, in fact the wind lifted it out after my purple beans had finished but like the idea of using path space. Q What are the poles at the top?.👩🌾.
Lilly the 🐈 was certainly enjoying your company! Ah, you mentioned growing beans separately to avoid cross pollination. I had wondered about that. Is that important for the eating beans or just for seed saving beans to remain true to type? How far apart do you like to keep different varieties? Limited space here means I just parked my French and Runner Beans right next to each other last year. Was planning on much the same again this year because more beans! 😋
Hey Tufty! I’m not growing them separately for cross-pollination reasons, just for ease of picking! Beans don’t tend to cross so saving seed from them is fine even if you grow them all on the same arch! Sometimes you get a rouge but its only ever happened to me once. Also yeah, Lily was having a great time! :D
I'm intrigued by the jiffy pellets and will definitely be giving them a go, one question why would you choose one size over another is it dependent on what you're planting?
Another great video Jessie. In zone 6A yesterday it was minus 13 but the windchill was a bone chilling minus 21 ' C. Here in Ontario, the weather network show no warming above zero degrees Celsius till after Feb 20th. I was wondering what the measurements of the arches. l think they are about 4 feet between the base and perhaps 10 or 12 inches wide.
Thanks Raymond! Hoo, thats cold! It’s supposed to get to -8 here one night this week and i don’t think I’ve EVER seen it get below -4 here before! The arches are 1.4m span and about 37cm wide.
Brilliant idea. Why not put them across the path with feet in the existing beds. That way you utilise the space. I am sure there is wisdom in your method. I am a novice!
